I'm a total moron, amd i think i messed up

Okay, so I am a moron

I watched my friend go through an old fashion stomach stappling and thought that the lap band was the same thing

She was on the liquid diet because...that's all she might of been able to eat.

I thought the same thing

So, I got home with my diet guidelines in hand.

I followed them for the two days....

But I was feeling fine.

I became more confident

I starting 'testing the waters'

I ate a WHOLE big mac, and I ate it fast.

I've been eating like before I had it done

(I have had no fills)

Then I start messing around on here and find out that the diet had a reason- SO YOU DON'T SLIP!!!!

Needless to say, I'm freaking out!

How will I know if I get a slip??????

I read about acid reflex....

Any other signs???

And yes, as I stated I AM AWARE I messed up, you don't have to tell me!!

When were you banded? I was banded 1/6/2011 I am 8 days post op I was told 2 weeks liquid, clear broth, diet Jello, week 3 I can start yogurt Soup ( egg drop, split pea)week 4 I can do mushy foods eggs etc. You have to ask yourself Why would you go through the trouble of surgery to come out and eat a big Mac of all things?? So you slipped up if I were you from here on out follow your drs. food plan if you start to vomit you coul slip your band this band is a tool you have to work with it not against it !! Well good luck to you .

You had no choice...if you ate something wrong, it would come right back up!

The band is not a quick fix and it is not automatic weightloss machine You must diet... You must make good decisions.... Yes you have to be careful... Yes you can cause some damage.... Yes you can slip... I would start researching the band you already have to get to know it better and I would do it quickly...

Unfortunately, the band doesn't do all the work, you have to work the band. The good news is that once you start getting enough Fluid in the band, your appetite is dimmed enough that whatever amount of will power you have, it becomes stronger. And each time you resist something, that little bit of will power grows.

* An action (in this case, acting on the decision to eat or not to eat)

What if willpower is simply a trigger, followed by an impulse, followed by a

decision, followed by an action? You already possess every power needed to

make good choices about your health and what you eat. Learn to break down

this sequence and make a decision to eat only if you are physically hungry.

Make a list of alternative activities to fill up 10-15 minutes the next time

you are tempted to eat when you are not physically hungry.

I would give your dr a quick call to discuss what you did, but you can "undo" it - so not worth freaking out. Now you know the risks so you can follow the plan the dr gave you! Don't be too hard on yourself - just move forward!!

Some people are back on solids within days of surgery so I doubt you've screwed up your band, but you really need to get your head around the idea that the band *does not* take the place of self-control and willpower. All it does, when you get to your sweet spot, is remove the hunger. It will not keep you from eating just because you want to or tell you when to stop eating.

By the way, it is the vertical sleeve that is more like the stomach stapling. The only real difference is that now they remove the unused part of the stomach.

I'm sorry that you thought the band was like the other WLS. They should have explained that to you when you came in for your consult. I am at 7.3cc's and I am able to eat everything that I ate before I had the band. I make choices not to eat those things because I didn't have this surgery just to stay the same or re-gain what I have lost. I have never slimed, PB, or threw up anything in the 10.5 months of being banded. You may be lucky like me and not have any issues eating anything. For some people this is not luck but a curse because they want to have the ill effects of eating certain foods to keep them from eating them a second time. I don't ever want to feel sick! I'm glad that I don't have to get sick in order to lose weight. I can do it by simply following the rules (most of the time lol). If I want ice cream I get frozen yogurt. I am sure as time goes along you will find something that you can substitute your favorite foods for that's better for you. I am not sure what will take the place of a big mac though....:) I hope you have success with your band!

Hi TanksMama,

Welcome to LapBandTalk! We are given the post-op diet by our doctors (whatever it may be) because it is what that particular surgeon has found to be best for the procedure/technique he uses. He feels it gives his patient the best chance for a good outcome. This is especially true for immediately post-op, but applies for the rest of our lives. The band is anchored down with a few stitches pulling the stomach over the band. The stomach grinds when solid food is eaten. The risk of those stitches pulling is high if they haven't healed and we eat solids too soon. That's why we are put on liquids even though we may be very hungry post-op.

That said. You ate a big mac. Ok, I am assuming that since you posted here about it, that you are not in excurciating pain and are not vomiting. If your surgery was in the very recent past, please please get back on your post-op diet. If not, forgive yourself and move on.

Signs of a slip are reflux and vomiting. Along with an inability to get foods down. It takes time for a slip to develop.

Until you get your fills and find proper restriction, you will be able to eat in quantities similar to what you could eat prior to surgery. As you find restriction, that amount will reduce. But if you push it, you can increase your chances for a slip.

I assure you, when you have restriction (after a few fills) you won't be able to quickly eat anything - let lone a Big Mac! LOL Big Macs will likely be possible, but you may not think them worth the effort. What happens in the first few weeks after surgery is nothing like what happens when you get restriction. It will come, just try to be patient and not sabotage yourself until it does.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
