As a child, my weight was "normal" until puberty. By the age of 20, I weighed about 250 lbs., at 25, I weighed 340. I joined Weight Watchers and lost 140 lbs in 6 months, but have yoyo'd between 230 and 280 since then. Over the years, I've tried Adkins and Weight Watchers again, but the weight keeps rising. 2 steps forward, 3 steps back. I now weigh 300 lbs (the most in 25 years!) . I've had one knee replaced and the other is on its way. Knee pain is a daily occurrence. My surgeon told me to lose weight. My BP has been rising over the last 2 years (since a car accident) until a week ago it was 160/106! Dr. now has me on a beta blocker - which has a side effect of causing weight gain! I have my own business that is physically demanding (Pressure washing) and need to be on my feet every day. My weight is (or at least needs to be) over!I realize that being banded is no guarantee of long-term success, but after so many years of fighting my weight, I've come to the conclusion that the "support" that diets and groups offer no longer are effective for me - and even when I thought they were, I was still yoyo'ing. I see the band as a Physical support group. It's support internal and not easily ignored - and in me for the long-term.
