Chili and Soups...Sliders???

Recommended Posts

if it's thick and not "soupy" it's OK. Doc told me hearty Soups are OK, just drain off most of the broth... I really do strain my Soup and just eat the veggies and meat now. But chili is my favorite. I eat it all the time. I also have been making that turkey taco soup every week and it's amazing!!! SO EASY.

brown 1 pound of ground turkey with 1/2 cup of chopped onions and 1/2 cup chopped green peppers

add to crock pot with

2 cans drained pinto Beans

1 can drained black Beans

2 cans Rotel tomatoes (diced with green chilis)

1 packet taco seasoning

1 packet Ranch dressing mix (NOT DIP mix...)

1 cup frozen corn (you can leave out if you're worried about the carbs... but in a 1 cup serving of the soup you only get a couple tablespoons of corn and it's so pretty and helps the flavor)

and that's it... I fill the taco seasoning packet with Water and add it, but no more. It's really thick and hearty. I eat it every day for lunch with a little fat free sour cream on top. YUMMMMMMMMM

aaaaaaaaand this is why I adore you <3

I've never had chili before so I'm going to try this one tomorrow.

Thanks :)

Aw, yay! Make sure you let us know how it is! Are you going to use tofu or meat?

Chili and Soups - even the chunky variety - are definitely slider food for me. I'm able to eat quite a lot without filling up. My doc doesn't want me eating either, but I still do sometimes. They are tasty, healthy and easy to eat. I just try to keep the quantities in check and eat them sparingly.

I recognize that recipe!! (posted it some time ago..lol)

I have to be careful with that soup.. I like it too much and can easily over do it. :)

I've talked to our nutritionist about eating soup....and she advised 1) do thick soups 2) eat any "broth" part of the soup first.

When at home, I make our soups thick, and serve my portion with a slotted spoon. I made black bean and pumpkin soup this week.. it was very good.

I think I'll use tofu. I've liked tofu in the past couple of years and have been searching for yummy recipes with it in it.

It also depends on how tight you have your band. I have very tight restriction and most chili or Soups take their time in me to go down, chili especially. I can deal with 3 or 4 bites(small, well chewed bites) and that's usually it, it all depends. Brothier soups I can down more but most brothier soups like chicken noodle still fill me because I usually get the broth down first and only a bite or three of the chicken (if you are the eating the chunkier kind. I usually ending up throwing away the noodles. I can never really finish a whole bowl of Soup or chili.

must be sweeeeeeet! To fill up on that, how many fills have you had, or amount in your band?(I know everyone is different, but still curious)

Have you discovered PB2? It's Peanut Butter that has had all the oil removed.. comes as powder and you reconstitute it to the thickness that you prefer with Water.

With all the oil removed a HUGE amount of the calories are gone.. instead of 190 cal in 2 tbpns.. there's like 45 or so. Protein is reduced a small amount (5 g instead of 7) but I think it's a worthwhile trade off.

If you can't find it in a local health food store, you can order it from netrition.com. It comes in regular and chocolate. Love it.

One more.. DaVinci also makes a s/f Peanut Butter Syrup. I'm having a cup of coffee with some in it right now. oh so good.

Sometimes I'll have coffee with s/f chocolate & s/f pnut butter syrup.. tastes like I'm drinking a reeses cup.

Again, if you can't find local.. netrition.com to the rescue. Amazon also carries some s/f syrups, but I think netrition probably has better deals once you factor in the shipping.

Mel- I LOVE PB2!!!! Sadly, I basically am out of it and I was really surprised that there isn't a retailer near where I live currently that sells it. However there is a small health food store near my parents house and since we'll be there next week for thanksgiving I figured I'd just wait until we got there instead of ordering. But I am missing my PB2! I love it! I used to drink powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury a lot (these days I drink ready to go shakes like premier protein) and I always mixed it in with chocolate Unjury, fat free milk and a little ice. Chocolate peanut butter icy Protein shake - so yummy (I'm not even joking- it tasted like a milkshake. I totally looked forward to that Protein shake:tongue2: )

Thanks so much for the tip about davinci syrup! I've never heard of it but I'm such a peanut butter fanatic I'm always looking for yummy peanut butter options! Definitely will be checking it out, thanks!!

Just had chilli with ground chicken! Delicious and very filling. Like everyone else, I make it pretty thick. If I do eat Soup, it is pretty hearty and I may eat a wheat thin or two to give me the full feeling.

Chili is a staple for me. I make it thick, and eat 2-5 ounces, depending on time of day and hunger. It always holds me to the next meal.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
