SLIPPED BAND...It is a BIG DEAL!

Recommended Posts

I did not see the post where someone told you to quit whining about a slipped band. I agree it is a big deal.

I think I would do some whining myself over a slipped band. I'm glad they were able to fix the problem.

This is more reason to get a flu shot and hope it covers the type of flu that is going around. Even without the band I get a flu shot every year because the last time I had the flu my PCP wanted to admit me to the hospital, but I have no insurance. Even the flu can be a big deal all on it's own.

I am sorry to hear your story. I am just recovering from the stomach flu. I am really worried that my band could have slipped. I vomitted repeatedly for about 5 hours straight. What were your first signs that your band slipped?

I am so sorry that you had to go through such a traumatic ordeal with your slipped band. Hopefully you will be on your way to recovery and good as new. I know exactly what you are saying about people telling you that is no big deal for a slipped band. The chat forum on here has some really misinformed people that think they are doctors and are not as supportive as we would expect from them. I hope and pray that since my 2 year bandiversary is coming up that I never had to go through that. I never had a fill and hope that maybe that could be what saves me from such a horrible experience like you just had. Have a speedy recovery and good luck.

My band slipped. I never had any pain or vomitting with the slip..I started gaining weight..lot's of weight, but I was only eating what I would normally eat and I was still exercising. My band slipped because I was overfilled by the surgeon's assistant. I had surgery to fix the slip 7/30/10 I was in surgery for 4 hours and they almost couldn't get the band back around my stomach in position. I was told that I would have been an easier bypass patient. I spent 3 days in the hospital, I don't remember the first surgery hurting so much as the repair did. I then got an infection and had a couple of the scars bust open and drain. The weight that I put on still hasn't come off, and it's so depressing. My clothes that I wore don't fit anymore and I refuse to purchase new clothes in a larger size. I just keep working at losing it, and hoping that when I see my doctor on Thursday this week he will fill me. It just feels like a nightmare, I mean we all were fat and we know what it feels like to have to go buy larger clothes. Well that feeling is worse when you have a band and know that you shouldn't be buying larger clothes, it just makes you feel like a failure, like everyone who knows you is looking at you and talking about you behind your back about how you have this great tool and how you got again fat.

How sad for you:frown:. I hope that you can get back on track with a new fill and all. I HATE physician assistants. They all think they know better than we do about our bodies. The surgeon is the only one that has ever filled me. Good luck. Kll724

Does anyone know if anybody without fills has ever had a slipped band? Just curious.

All i can say is people are not always nice, understanding and empathetic as you may be. I always thought if peole have the band they are probably in the same mentality boat as I am in, when in reality, there are many different type people with the band and unfortunately, some are just f--ked. So your right, dont let anyone bring you down. I feel for your perdicament(spelling sucks) and wish you teh best of luck. For the lady who owes 28,000.00 to her hospital, all I can say is "WOW" and know that that is royally screwed up. Best of luck to you all.

I sit here struggling with the notion to write this or not...but something someone said to me yesterday is very disturbing. I think her words were "A Slipped Band is not a BIG Deal, quit your whining it can be fixed."

I followed all the rules the Doctor gave me and for 18 months have had phenominal success with my band. I eat right and I excercise and within this time have lost 129 lbs...putting me 5 lbs under my original goal. Two weeks ago I came down extremely ill with the FLU and my world changed. I've never been so sick in all my life and the vomitting was non-stop. It landed me in the ER for two days, my LAP-BAND®® slipped, they unfilled it...hoping it would fall back into place. Unfortunately it didn't and surgery was scheduled. My Doctor was not sure what they would find. Could I have been so sick that it could of caused a possible errosion. I was lucky...but it is a VERY BIG DEAL! I was in surgery for 4 hours to fix my Slipped LAP-BAND®®...and a 3 day hospital stay. It just really angered me yesterday when someone told me to quit whining about surgery. Surgery is risky no matter who you are or how healthy you are. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my LAP-BAND®® and I love the success I've had with it...but surgery of any kind is scary. Things like "throwing up" shouldn't be taken so lightly or carelessly. A slipped band can and will happen if you don't take care of yourself properly.

I thought this forum was for sharing your stories and helping and supporting one another. If I can help one person not go through what I did, then its a success. Obviously I couldn't stop the Flu from happening, but I wish I would of gone to the Doctor at the first sign of being sick and had my LAP-BAND®® unfilled. Maybe then I'd be out running today instead of being on day 7 of recovery.

I will however not let this stop me or drag me down. I'm loving life and love the "new me". Everyone has a story and deserves to be heard!

Hi there and thanks so much for posting this. You shared something HUGELY important and I have certainly filed your experience away in case I ever get a bug that causes the vomiting. I'm so sorry you had to go through with this and the added insensitive/ignorant remark!!! I am so glad that you are at goal so feel confident and hopeful that all will now be well as you continue your road of health and success. You are an inspiration as it's such early days for me still - thanks again for posting your thought. Many people are going to learn from you about tummy bugs and how careless words impact others! Best wishes to you.:smile2:

A slipped band absolutely is a big deal! My band slipped after 15 months and I had surgery last month. When it slipped it occluded the opening and I couldn't keep anything down. I have never been so sick in my life. Because I could keep nothing down I had to go thourgh the ER and be admittied for surgery in the morning. The surgery took about 45 minutes and it went well. I was discharged after about 24 hours of first walking into the hospital.

My insurance denied payment so that made me a self-pay and I got my hospital bill this week. It's $28,000! And that doesn't inlcude the surgeon's fees, the anesthesiologist's fees or the radiologist's fees. I also got a statement in the mail saying that if my insurance had paid, the hospital would have settled for $1998.00 but since they didn't pay, I am responsible for the entire $28,000. This is because my insurance company has a contract with the hospital and I don't.

I was barely overweight enough to have the lapband with a BMI of 30. I have reached my goal weight and am very thankful for my band. But if you figure I have lost 54 pounds and after I get all the bills from the revision surgery that will put me at nearly $50,000 spent on the band and just under $1,000 a pound.

So the band slipping IS a big deal, not only because it jeopardizes your health until it is fixed but because it can leave you financially devastated.

This is one of my biggest fears. I am a self-pay and my insurance refuses to pay any sort of weight loss. It was a huge financial stress to get the lap band. I don't know what I will do if I have to come up with money for additional surgery. My thoughts are with you.

I can't believe anybody would say a slipped band is no big deal. It is a huge deal and one of my big fears. Thank you for the information. I did not know it was possible to request an unfill when you are sick and I had heard it was not good to vomit but did not realize how serious the repercussions could be. I also agree that ANY kind of surgery is a big deal. You never know when there is going to be a problem with anesthesia, infections, etc. It is very scary and thank God you came through it all right.

As I type this, I'm in day 5 of an emergency hospital stay to remove a slipped band. A few weeks ago I had a stomach bug and vomited constantly. After a few days, everything as semi normal. Still vomited if I are incorrectly or didnt chew enuf. In fact, Tuesday before thanksgivmg I made a comment that my stomach felt better than it ever had, post band.

That changed thansgiving. Ate very little, but what I did came back almost instantly. That rocked on until Saturday night when I went to local ER for fluids. After spending a few hours and 3 liters of fluids, I was discharged to contact my band specialist. I was able to get in Monday around noon, where all of the saline was removed.

By 2 pm, everything was still the same. Couldn't keep down liquids, much less solid food. I contacted my lap band dr and he suggested I attempt to get a referral for an upper Gi from my primary since I'm a self pay. After getting an appt with my primary for tuesday afternoon, I continued the cycle of drink and vomit. I should digress and say the pain was worse than anything I had ever been through and could not get comfortable to save my life. Cold, heat, laying down, sitting up, stretching, I tried them all.

After arriving at my primary's office, he began his check. My entire abdomen area was tender to the touch and in fact, when he touched me in one spot, I knee jerked and almost hit him. He listened to everything. Through all my pain I did notice he had never been that pale, in all the 13+ years I had known him. He looked at my boyfriend and told him I needed to be in the ER now, no jacking around. Said he didn't hear any gastric sounds at all. He was concerned that the band had slipped and/or I had a preforation.

After arriving at the ER, I was rushed through a series of tests. The band had slipped. My white blood count was 30 I was scheduled for surgery Wednesday. The surgeon discussed if I wanted to put in something else or have it removed completely. I chose removal. After surgery, the dr told my boyfriend that my band/stomach had gang green. He told him if we had waitied 12 more hours I would have been dead. Dead, what a way to wake up!!

There are tons more of ins and outs of this ordeal that I could go into, and will if asked. Please y'all, don't let someone make your decisions for you, directly or indirectly. You know when something isn't right. Be your own patient advocate. Good luck to you all.

I was first banded in 2007, I slipped my band and was rebanded in 2010. I loved my first band...I lost weight. Like you I did everything right, and was a self confirmed exercise junkie. When my band slipped even though I was still doing everything right I was gaining like 2 pounds a day until the day they did my surgery. My new band and I have a love/hate relationship...I love that I have restriction (because my first band had to be filled every month..no restriction), but the hate part is I'm not losing the weight as fast as I did the first time or that I'm not losing the weight as fast as I gained it back. I gained back 37 pounds. It makes you rethink all the rules...eating and exercise. It really is a big deal!!! and they will think the same when they slip their band. I have heard from other people that..it's really not a slip as much as it is a band switch...what I mean is when you first got banded you were bigger and so your stomach was larger, so they had to use a band that would go around your larger stomach, now that you have lost weight your band moved because it was for the bigger stomach...so now you have to have a smaller band put around your now smaller stomach. If you think about it it makes sense in some crazy way, but it's still a big deal because like yours mine also took 4 hours, unlike the first surgery of only an 1 hour.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
