I have been overweight all of my adult life, and most of my adolesent life.  Like most people, I had tried most every diet known to man, from phem-fen to Jenny Craig.  I had been succesful in losing some weight, but never made my goal weight.  I was also never able to keep the weight off.  A friend of mine had had gastric bypass surgery and had some success with it.  I was apprehensive about altering my body in that way, so I decided that was not an option for me.  I had began to see more information on TV for the lap-band system and it peaked my interest.  I had done some minor research into lap-band, but the out of pocket expense was more than I could manage.  Then in 2009, I went on a weekend cruise, and while I was waiting for my friend to get ready, I noticed myself in the mirror.  I was sitting on the bed, sideways, and looked like a whale, Don't get me wrong, I KNEW I was FAT, but that view blew me away.  I knew then as soon as I returned home, I was going to figure out a way to have this surgery.  After attending a seminar, I began speaking to a facilitator about the procedures I needed to do to have this surgery.  After again being quoted $15K, I was disheartened.  I began looking into other options, including surgery in Mexico.  I located a Dr. in Cancun, whom I felt comfortable with, and proceeded with surgery in May, 2009.  Since surgery, I have lost 50lbs, almost halfway to my goal weight.  I feel better, look better, and have a new confidence.  This is the best thing I could have done for myself.
