desperatelyw.loss, I'm so sorry to hear about the BIG mess up, on the part of the nurse. I know you was looking so forward to getting things on the way.

Count me as a September Sweetie. Saw doctor today and although I still need one more test (gallbladder) I was able to set surgery for Sept. 28th. Just hope I can get appt. for test next week or I may have to wait until Oct. cause husband and I have a cruise planed for Sept. 9 thru 18. Doctor wants 2 week pre op diet (low carb & protein) but he's only going to get 10 days. Think he will notice?

desperatelyw.loss -- This whole experience has many ups and downs and I have learned that I don't have to be nice all the time anymore. Has anyone else here discovered they have a backbone too? When you get a chance to actually talk to your doctor, you need to mention what has happened to you. I believe our doctors need to know how we are handled.

We are super glad you are a part of our group. Welcome.

kosy2 -- There are too many here that have a week or no pre-op diet at all. I don't think your doctor will notice a difference of 4 days. Go and enjoy your cruise.

phershey -- Those dreams will be a reality this time next year. We are ending the fattest time of our lives now. Yeppe:lol:

I have 174 hours or 10441.56 minutes or 626484.72 seconds away but who's counting. Got an app on the iphone counting down to the hour.

Ok... my friend got her lap-band 18 months ago. I finally told her today that I was also having it done. I asked her a bunch of question. No she doesn't regret it because she has lost 80 pounds. She said she follows it because one time she over did it and threw up and doesn't want to experience that again. She also recommended that we always carry Water with us all the time....

I've been reading some stuff on-line and some people say that the band fails after 10 years. Did any of you ask your doctor about the duration of it?

thanks

Septmeber 29

I kinda wish it were tomorrow but then again, I've got lots to learn in these next few weeks. If you had one most important thing to share with a newbie, what would it be?

Has the band even been around for 10 years?

I would not be surprised if this is sort of true (can that last forever in the body without degrading?), but I just don't know how accurate 10 years is.

It's great that you have a friend who had the surgery to talk to! What a great resource.

I think it's a blessing to have a good month before your surgery to do all of the research you can, and get started on the "psychology" of the band. I've been reading, reading, reading and making lots of "to do" lists so that I'm as prepared as possible.

Some of the things on my to do list: borrow the weight loss surgery cookbooks from my library to see what I might want to buy, test several different Protein replacement drinks so I know what I like and can stock up beforehand, buy a new pair of athletic shoes to 'treat my feet', look for a good food scale, start weaning myself off diet soda, etc.

It feels like I'm making a step every day even though I haven't had the surgery yet, and I feel like I'm setting myself up for success by preparing now, and not after I'm got the band on.

Did your friend say why it would be good to always carry Water with us all the time....

sourmissg: she said because we have a higher potential for dehydration. She also reminded me that we can't drink with our meals we have to wait 30 min after we eat.

stateofzen: I don't know if it has... I saw something on utube of a people stating it failed after 7/8 yrs but I think just like everything your going to find posatives and negatives.... I think we all did the re-search, feel good about our doctor's and made the right decisions for us...

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
