3 days since surgery and have not lost ANY weight

Recommended Posts

I'm really confused. I know that when you get your lapband you are only supposed to be on Clear Liquids for the first week. This DOES NOT INCLUDE eggs of any kind and slim fasts which you say you are drinking. You are only supposed to be on CLEAR liquids which include pretty much anything you can see through but with limitations. For instance -- chicken broth, beef broth, Jello, etc. Then you're supposed to progress from Clear Liquids to full liquids to puree then to soft foods and then normal foods. It should be at least 4 weeks before you start to eat normal food.

The reason why they make you be on this diet is because you're stomach is so swollen from the surgery and the band. Not to mention it is likely that if you do overdo it and eat something that you are not supposed to eat you may get a bowel obstruction which is no fun at all.

I suggest you call your doctor and make sure you're doing this right, but I'm just going based off what most lap band surgeons tell their patients.

I'm sorry if I'm sounding like I'm lecturing you, but it's important that you follow the rules of your surgeon.

It's likely you're not losing weight because your body is retaining Fluid from being in the hospital.

I'm really confused. I know that when you get your LAP-BAND® you are only supposed to be on clear liquids for the first week.

Every doctor has different requirements. During my 3 week pre-op and 2 week post-op diet I was never restricted to "clear" liquids.

Every Dr. is different.

I am being banded on June 14th and started my preop diet today. It isn't restricted to liquids- it is high protein/low carb.

Post op week 1 is liquids (full liquids, not clear)

Post op week 2 is mushies

As for the weight loss post op. I was told by my surgeon, nutritionist and about 500 people on this board alone, "DO NOT expect to start really losing weight until you have had a couple fills and you have restriction." Depending on how often and how aggressive your Dr. is about fills, this can take a few MONTHS. Not days. MONTHS.

This is not gastric bypass and the weight does not start falling off immediately post op.

Do a search on this board for bandster hell and you'll get an eyeful. I am sorry if your Dr. did not prepare you for this. It seems to be a huge problem out there.

I got banded on the 26th. I follow the Meal Replacement diet pretty closely -- only add a couple berries or 1/2 banana 2 x a day. Starving -- stomach makes noises I haven't heard in years. Have a couple popsicles and jellos through the day. Nothing else. Elliptical 45 mins a day good pace. And I have lost 7 lbs since the 26th. I am sad, disappointed and disillusioned. I take this very seriously and very hard.

First- Have someone else in your house HIDE THE SCALE! My husband did when he got tired of me announcing how much I had lost (or NOT lost) everytime I walked in-n-out of our bathroom! Now we only weigh on SUnday mornings--MUCH better--less stress and no more obsessing.

Second- Congratulations on your surgery! I know how hard of a decision it was for ME to have my surgery (04/15/10) so I applaud each and every one of us for our bravery and tenaciousness! WE ROCK!!

I just had the surgery last week and weighed 388 the week before that. I was placed on a pre opt diet and weighed in on the day of surgery at 375. Since the surgery my weight has stayed around 358-360. I'm working out twice a day for 30 minutes and drinking shakes, I made a mistake last night and ate a blueberry muffin, I finally cleaned out my refrigerator and pantry with anything that would tempt me further. I learned last night that this mental and I need to be strong, going to look at different shakes and Protein today. I need to be able to mix fruit or bananas into those shakes it's getting old. I have not had any fills at this time. Seeing the doctor next week which will be 3 1/2 weeks.

Eating one muffin is not the end of the world ,but if It had been a box of muffins different story. A treat occasionally is o.k we do have to learn to eat like normal people..

It's hard to believe that you would expect to lose any weight right after surgery. As PPs have stated you are pumped full of IV fluids. I gained 4 pounds the day of my surgery. Also, did your physician not talk to you about any of this? I had to attend classes, meet with a NUT, I even had to take a quiz on a booklet handed out at my first visit. All this information was in the book and told to me over, and over again. Please don't expect to lose any weight for a long while. Measure your food, count calories during this time period. Once you obtain restriction it will come easily and the weight will start to come off. Most of all, hang in there and read these boards! Best wishes!!!

Hi I was banded on the 3rd June and was told not to eat anything but fluids for my first two weeks after surgery. I dont think you should be eating any solids

Three days is way to early to expect anything, you just had surgerY!! Also I only allowed full liquids for two weeks after. Today is my first day of soft food and I've only had cottage cheese. I think eggs on the third day is too much. Your stomach is not supposed to work too hard at digesting anything. I would relax and concentrate on getting back and walking around a bit.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
