Sharp pain in right side...

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone...

I had My Lap Band surgery almost two weeks ago and on Friday I was almost feeling like Me again. The only pain I had was when I would bend down and lay on my right side (it was burning & pulling) but the doctor said this was normal and it will go away. So Saturday morning I woke up with this horrible sharp pain in My right side, it was so bad I was rolling around on my bed crying. I know that sounds silly but that's how bad it was. My husband helped me get up and sit in the recliner and it felt better sitting up. The pain was/is still there but not as bad. The only way to describe the way it feels is like a knife is in my side and when I sit it's painful but not as bad as when I move, when I move it's more like the knife is twisting. It also hurts when I breathe in deep or yawn. Today is Monday and the pain is still the same. Also it's not right where the port is, it's lower and closer to my side...I'm just wondering if anyone else is having this problem? :tongue2: Thanks

Oh my gosh! I am having this same problem Lace! My sharp pain is closer to my groin area, in the right lower quadrant of my abdomen. I've been having this pain since last Thursday, but it got worse. Occasionally, it'll go away. It feels better to be on my recliner than to be laying in bed or sitting in a normal chair cuz I feel like I'm sitting too straight. I too, was close to tears! I called my surgeon's office today and spoke with the nurse practitioner. She said that it doesn't sound like the pain is related to the Lap Band itself, but could be gas, or bowel trying to move (it's slower from the anesthesia). She also said it could be appendicitis and that if I have nausea, vomiting, a temperature, or if the pain gets worse to go to the ER. I hope your pain goes away soon Lace! Good luck!

I was thinking it was gas but MAN gas can't be trapped for that long right? lol

Not to be gross or anything but I have been going to the bathroom normal and everything...I'm pretty worried about it. I'm hoping it goes away soon! I don't want to have problems with this surgery... :tongue2:

If it keeps up, I would call your doctor. I'm still a little nervous cuz it isnt' going away. I'm afraid it may be my appendix. I don't have any nausea or vomiting and I don't have a temp, so I'm trying to wait it out.

Gosh no, your not being gross! Trust me, I'm a nurse and I've heard it all. LOL I had a little trouble going and had to drink some juice which seems to have helped the trouble, but not the pain.

If the pain keeps up and you are worried, I'd call your doctor. I'm still contemplating the ER if the pain doesn't go away. Good luck!

If it continues, go to the dr and have them check you out. If your lap band doc doesn't think its anything, go to your regular doc. Could be something as simple as gas, but then again it could be your appendix or gall bladder.

I went to the ER today Lace. My right lower quad pain is from a UTI (urinary tract infection) and a small ovarian cyst. I was just relieved that it wasn't a hernia or my appendix. They put me on antibiotics. I hope your pain is getting better! Take care!

I actually called my surgeon and He wanted me to come in yesterday. He's going to do an ultrasound and a urinalysis...they are going to call today to schedule. They just want to check out my band and my gallbladder. He said more than likely everything is fine. Fingers crossed! Thanks!!

Yup, had the same thing! Mine was/is on my left side. I was told it was trapped gas from the operation and I needed to keep moving to make it better. I am almost 1 month post-op and it has lessened significantly. I did some heavy duty gardening and cleaning up outside yesterday for 4+ hrs and didn't feel it once. Any chance you get, move. Walking is a light, easy way. I propped a pillow under my side in bed which took some of the pressure off. On another note, your appendix is on your right side - any chance that could be an issue? When in doubt, talk to the doctor. Good luck

I guess we have to remember that we have other things going on in our bodies besides the lapband and not all can be traced back to it. Hope you feel better, both of you.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
