I feel like I'm failing in "bandster hell"...

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone...

I'm really starting to feel like a failure, and I would like some insight as to whether or not what I'm going through is normal.

I had my surgery on March 26th of this year, so I'm a few days shy of 2 months post op.

I have my second fill scheduled for June 5th, and my first one was done on May 8th, and it was 3cc in a 10cc band.

For about a week after my first fill, I had really good restriction. After that week, I started to get very hungry.

I feel like I'm eating wayyyy more than I'm supposed to (approximately 8-9oz a sitting) because anything less keeps me feeling like I'm still very hungry. The satisfied feeling comes only after about 8oz or so.

I'm sure this is what everyone calls "bandster hell", but my question is, am I doing damage by eating that amount? I'm never uncomfortably FULL after I eat, I just feel satisfied after that amount.

I understand true restriction comes with time and fills, but in the meantime, am I causing damage? Am I streching my pouch? And how am I supposed to eat less if I'm still VERY hungry after 4oz?? As soon as I pass 4oz and keep eating more, I start feeling like a failure even though I'm not forcing myself, and its NOT head hunger.

Has anyone else went through this???

Any advice would be HIGHLY appreciated...:tongue2:

When I went for my seminar, I was told I would be eating 9 oz at each meal, so I don't think you are doing anything wrong.

Are you losing? As long as you are losing I think you are ok. And as long as the 9 oz you are eating are the right foods, and you are eating your Protein first, I think you should be ok. But I don't have my band yet so take all the with a grain of salt.

I Am going threw somewhat the same thing. I was banded 3 days before you and waiting in my third fill. I can eat almost 2 cups. My Doctor doesn't seem to think I am doing damage. My instructions from him was to eat a cup of dense Protein and I should be full. That is how he evaluates my fills

I was banded on 3/22 and had the same problem after my first fill. I felt like I could eat ANYTHING and everything. I even told them that at my last fill appointment (last week) and she went a bit more aggressive and gave me 1.5 more - so I'm at a total of 6.5 and let me tell you - HELLO RESTRICTION. Of course, I am praying that it stays that way, and so far so good. I can eat smaller amounts - I tend to do 3 smaller meals per day plus 1 or 2 Snacks. I try to keep my calories around 1000-1200 per day.

I think what you're going through is normal and you're not a failure. Plus, it's 3ccs. I have the 10cc band and the 5 barely did anything. Maybe ask for a more aggressive fill at the next appointment?

I saw your ticker and you're doing awesome! You've lost 37 pounds, which 1) makes me jealous :tongue2: and 2) is AWESOME! So, don't think you're a failure!

You're not a failure--you're just struggling. Lots of us do.

I can't answer the question about whether you're stretching your pouch. I can tell you that you were given guidelines for a reason, and it's a very good idea to stick with them.

And how am I supposed to eat less if I'm still VERY hungry after 4oz??

Simple. You just stop eating. You may be hungry, but none of us is going to die of the hunger we experience during bandster hell.

Truly, this is the last time you will be hungry in the name of weight loss. You can wait to lose until you have restriction--lots do, and that's your prerogative. But if you want to lose, you will be hungry.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
