More positivity, more smiley face on the prairie!

I caught my reflection in a window two days ago, and I was so surprised. I looked AWESOME! Now, for whatever reason, it's so different for me catching my reflection by chance than it is looking in the mirror every day. Don't get me wrong, when I look in the mirror now I can definitely see changes in myself. I know I'm not physically the same person that I was 7 months ago, but I don't think I see myself honestly, because I do mostly see a bigger person than I think I am now. But my reflections that I catch in windows, doors or unexpected mirrors still keep surprising me!! More than once I truly didn't even realize it was me I was looking at.. well, at least it didn't register that it was me if that makes any sense at all!   I went to see my surgeon today for my 7 month check up. I have lost 95 pounds! The nurse whom I regularly see told me that soon I will need to sit down with the doc and set my final goal! It feels fabulous to have reached this point so much sooner than I had planned!   My other bit of fabulous news is that I am now wearing a size 10 jeans! Can I get a HELL YEAH?!!   No fill for me today. The nurse warned me that I may not make it a full month though without reaching "super hunger mode" and if I do before my next appointment to call them and come right up for a little fill! I'm still floating up here on cloud 10, and I don't plan to come back down anytime soon! And I might just add too, that "my other butt" is making a very nice come back if I do say so myself! It definitely needs work, but it sure is lookin good in jeans!   For those of you reading this blog who are just starting your lap band adventure, or whom are just thinking about starting it, I want you to know that if you are willing to make a few sacrifices, this tool is the best thing you can do for yourself! If you are wondering if you can cheat your way through, the answer is yes, but why the hell would you? And last of all, attitude is EVERYTHING with this process! You must believe you will succeed, and be ready to put forth every effort to do so! Be willing to give some things up to gain SO MUCH!! It's worth it.. worth every last penny, worth every piece of bread you eventually won't be able to eat, worth every bottle or can of soda that you probably won't be able to drink for a good long time, and worth dealing with the head hunger for awhile. Another step taken!!

Today was my psych eval in Baton Rouge. My parents came and went with me, so it turned out to be a nice day. The eval really wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The setting was comfortable, easy conversation...really nice. My psychologist actually has had the VS done as well... Which was really exciting to sit and talk to someone face to face who has had the procedure. Glad this step is finished. Getting closer every day!!!

I HAVE ARTHRITIS IN MY KNEES AND LATELY I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING WITH BACK PAIN, NOT TO MENTION THIS RECURRING PAIN IN THE LOWER LEFT QUADRANT OF MY ABDOMEN.   ANY SUGGESTIONS??

SLOWER LOSER'S

This is for all of us who get discourage when we don't lose as fast as everyone else.   I read all these blogs about the quick weight lose or discouraged about only losing 10 pounds. I sometimes get discouraged because in almost a year I lost 40 lbs. The majority of this weight has been in last few months. I lose on average 1/2 or 1 pound a week. I work out 5 days a week. I felt like a failure for the first 6 months because I wasn't losing and put my family in such a financial debt. I have finally started losing steady and feeling good about myself. I just wanted to let the people out there know that everyone's body is different. Some lose fast and other's slow. Some feel restriction with surgery and many others 4 or 5 fill's later. Everyone is different. Everyone's opening to stomach is different. I have lost slow but my health is improving. I am off almost all medicine. I have more energy and my self confidence is out of this world. Don't get discourage because you didn't lose 25lbs first month like Joe Blow. We will all get there at our body's own pace. Take it one day at a time.

Last Nutrition Class + Last Meal

Today I had my final nutrition class! These past 6 months have flew by! The classes were really helpful and I intend to apply all I learned there to help my weight loss after surgery. Tonight I am going out with a couple of friends to Olive Garden. I start my pre op diet Friday, and I know I won't be able to eat normally for a couple of months. I figured I'd take the opportunity to enjoy some OG! I'm excited! For those of you that read this and have been through surgery already, I had a quick question about the hair loss situation. I've been trying to prepare myself for it and I'll be able to handle my hair "thinning out". However, does it get so bad that bald spots start showing up? The idea is freaking me out :/ Thanks to this board, I now know that Biotin, MSM, and keeping my protein up may slow it down. I'm just wondering how it worked for others. Thanks!

1st fill

Well today was my first fill. 2.25 was the amount I received today. I didn't know if it would hurt or not and the needle did hurt just a bit but nothing that I could not handle. So today I am on liquids only. Tomorrow I can start soft foods again. The grand news is 29 lbs down. I can say that I can feel the liquid go down today. Maybe it's in my head. Until next time

I had my vertical sleeve done with Dr. Kim this past Monday; just got home today because my white blood cell count and temperature were elevated. But now all is well and I am feeling much better. I did a lot of walking in the hospital which I know helped me feel much better. I have 6 sites on my stomach which are closed with staples.   The hospital I stayed at was very nice and the nurses and support staff were great. Had to get up and walk every 2 hours on the day of my surgery. This was a bit uncomfortable, but still manageable. Not too much pain or nausea. My advice to anyone having this procedure is to do what they tell you to do. The walking may hurt a bit, but you will be better off for doing it in the long run (and increase your walking a little bit each time). I'm glad to be home.

I am one month post op and so far to date I have lost 20lbs with no saline in my band. I am super excited however nervous that when I begin real food the weight is going to pile back on. The Confession

It has been many weeks since I decided to have WLS. However, it is only recently that I have decided to share this information with friends and family. The news has elicited some very unusual responses from people. My brother screamed at me. He refused to believe this surgery would help me lose weight. He told me I just need to stop eating crap. My best friend admitted she was envious of me. Another friend insisted I didn't need the surgery and that she would never do it. She then commented that our vacations to all-inclusive resorts would now be over.   I wished in these times that I never told anyone of my plans. The people who I know support me live many miles away and I don't get to speak to them often. My mother understands. My cousin understands. My best friend understands. I live in another country right now so communication with them is limited. I also believe the topic gets boring for everyone else but me.   I don't know who I will be after the surgery. So much of my time is spent enjoying life through food and drink. I now will have to redefine my life, my interests, and how handle myself in those situations. In many ways, I am looking forward to these changes. But I worry too. I don't want people to resent me or feel awkward around me.   10 days until surgery

I freakin did it!

Okay, I don't want to sound like an ad for e-cigs here, but they have been amazing. I quit for a month in June, suffered daily and gained a ridiculous amount of weight. I have quit for a few days about 4 times since then and being around smoker friends and stress always got to me. I decided to try the e-cig and just go for the 0 nicotine version. I had terrible withdrawl for the first 3 days, but it was all the physical yuckiness. Since then, I keep my e-cig filled and charged and I haven't really had any craving whatsoever. The guys at the company I buy from say that is what it was designed for, but most people do it backwards and start with the high mg and stairstep down. I felt like that was just prolonging the inevitable suffering so I just did it. I even went out with a friend the other night while she smoked and smoked my e-cig. Not for a second did I want what she had, in fact, the smell was TERRIBLE. I may carry it around for a long while yet, but it is like inhaling a fog machine with a little flavor. My husband and I are doing this together (again) and we didn't try to kill each other this time either. lol. Tonight at midnight will be 8 days and for the first time in my life I don't miss it AT ALL. I am finally a non-smoker. This one stuck. It feels amazing. There is one side effect that hasn't been pleasant. I can smell everything so much better and I am finding a lot of things that smell pretty bad. Whatever your method, when you find it, you will know it. I know you can all do it. You are all worried about your health and attempting to do something about it or you wouldn't be on this forum at all! GL!! hello i am 1 month post op and i am having an issue i was cut at my belly button area and that's where they inserted the camera but now it is a lil swolllen in that area and it hurts when i bend over not real bad but there is some isdiscomfortness there any one have an idea. i see my surgeon friday

Ok...so today I had my appointment with my internist and it went really well. He is supportive in my decision to have the gastric sleeve and thinks that I will do well. He did tell me not to take my appointment for my psych eval too lightly. He said it is an important step and it is very important to be honest about any problems with depression in the past. I guess I'm a little nervous about that. The possibility of dealing with depression after surgery. I've had my fair share and really really don't want to go down that road again. Hopefully, if I go into it with the full knowledge of the chance of it, I will be ready to deal with it if it arises.   Anyway, I feel like I am another step farther along in my journey. Tomorrow is my psych eval and I'm excited to be getting that step done as well.   On we go!!!

Not in a celebrating mood

Hello all...   Its been a while since I have posted, haven't really had too much to say lately. This week is bring lots of thoughts and some disappointment. I'm almost 4 months post surgery and have not lost anything, I'm basically either staying the same or I'm up a few pounds. Its so frustrating to not be at my own personal mini goal. My birthday is this week and I'll be 35. I'm having a hard time with 35 for some reason and even more disappointing is that I seem to be stuck in this rut. I still believe the band was a good choice, just really wanted to lose more. I'm working out as much as I can and even taking different classes. I'm really hoping that the weight loss will start to pick up

Seminar done, couch to 5k, and a question about ports

So my hubby and I attended the required seminar today. We learned about the band, sleeve, and bypass. Both of us still want the band. Unfortunately they told us that my health insurance requires the 6 month medically supervised diet (ugh). I was hoping that this wasn't the case because it seems like it's so far away. When you know what you want the rest of your life to look like, you want it to start as soon as possible. I know the 6 months will fly by though. The coordinator will call us within 2 weeks to schedule our consults. A psych eval is required since they are a center of excellence. They do not require that a specific amount of weight be lost, and the insurance coverage goes off of my CONSULT weight and not my weight at the end of the 6 months. This is good news because I am right at 40 BMI and was nervous to lose any weight and then be excluded from coverage for the surgery. They do a 2 week liquid pre-op diet and the surgery is outpatient, so no overnight stay.   So when talking about our weight loss journey, I told my husband about the Couch to 5k running program. I have always hated running, but since watching some you tubers go through the training, it seems more doable. The fact that there are specific goals and that you are gradually increasing your running time makes it seem way less unpleasant than going from sedintary to running. Because we did not want to drop below that 40 BMI mark for fear of not getting insurance coverage, we were talking about starting this after recovering from our surgeries. However, now that I know that the insurance coverage will be based on our consult weights, we can start the program any time after that. Then maybe it wont seem as overwhelming after surgery to try to change my diet and my exercise habits all at once. And the more weight we can lose now, the less we need to worry about later I guess.   So now I am excited and I want to go buy a jogging stroller for the kids and some new running shoes. I found the downloadable podcasts that have the couch to 5k intervals on them so you can just listen to it and know when to start and stop running. This would be nice so that I don't have to watch a clock. Since it is getting cold outside, We will probably start at the gym until spring time.   Oh, I had a question, does anyone find that they have a problem with their port sticking out too far once you have lost weight? The surgeon talked about the fact that it's usually not a problem but that they do have some "low profile" ports that don't stick out as much. I don't know if this is a common problem for those who are now smaller.

I'd like to start out this entry with a positive note. the only positive one I can come up withis that I have been going to Curves everyday except Sunday and have been working it really hard, actually working the machines longer than they normally do. I really love going there. I makes me get out. I also went shopping Monday and was able to buy a pantsuit. It was still in a giant size, but it was in two sizes smaller than the last time I bought clothes. Now the negative. I went to Wal-mart yesterday and the Chocolate covered cherries and the mashmellow Santas called to me. I brought a box of cherries and 4 Santas home and hid them from my hubby. I am ashamed to say that I have eaten them all in a 24 hr period. I have absolutely no will power. I also ate a couple of pieces of Mounds candy. I am just going to have to physically stay away from things like that. Hubby and I leave in the morning for daughter's house then daughter and I leave Thursday for a wedding. I figure she will keep me a little more honest since she is on a pretty strict diet herself. All the kids will be here for Thanksgiving and that is going to be hard I know. Hubby is expecting all the trimmings. Pray I can be good.

pre-op diet woes

I'm only on Day 2 of my liquid diet (pre-op) and I'm STARVING. How do people make it? All I wanna do is sleep just so I can get the 2 weeks out of the way before surgery. I know thats not an option and in all honesty I have to get used to the liquid diet. Can someone please give me some suggestions on how to get through this.

Lets get the party started....

Ok so lets start this out with a bit about me. My name is Matt I'm currently 32 (birthday Nov 15) I'm married I have 2 boys I have many many many hours of tattoo work, with lots still not finished I have my septum and lobes pierced, my septum was stretched up to 00ga, but is now without jewelry, my ears are just shy of 1 3/4ths of an inch I'm a Veteran I'm an Information Technology Security Degree holder I'm a contractor for the Department of Defense   I was overweight as a child, was made fun of left and right. I was my mom's eating buddy, my extended family was mostly Italian so there was lots of "manga manga" going on. We were expected to eat and eat quite a bit, which I did, of all the wrong things. We moved around a bunch. When we lived in Florida, a combination of the heat, increased activity and better eating choices lead me to lose quite a bit of weight. I was now "fit and trim" for my return home and subsequent high school years.   I Joined the Air Force in 1997. I was over what the Air Force wanted me to be weight wise compared to my height. At 5 foot 9 inches I was to be at or under 189 lbs. I was 200/210, but still very fit and active. Most of the weight I attribute to my muscle strenght. but alas, I needed to be under 189, so I did everything I could think of, from starvation, to dehydration, jumping jacks in the sauna, you name it, I did it. And I made it in. During basic training I widdled down to an amazing 170 lbs. Sure I looked good, but I didnt' feel all that great being that small. Looking back at photos, the thoughts I have range from "I look sick like I have aids or cancer" to "damn I was sexy". After basic was technical training, during these months in Mississippi, I slowly got back to my "normal" weight, floating around 200. But no one noticed and I wasn't flagged for any weigh-ins. After tech school came my assignment. Fort Meade, Md. Things went fine, but being an IT job, sitting lots, working odd hours, overnights, etc, the muscle weight was replaced with flab, and after a year or so at my duty station I was poked for being too chubby. I was pointed to a co-worker and ex body builder for assistance. I followed his orders and begain doing some "not so healthy" things to lose weight, which didn't happen. Quite the reverse actually, I was consuming massive amounts of protein, water, carbs, I was working out 2 hours or so a day in the gym, yet in 3 months, I actually gained 80 lbs and I didn't know why. Turns out that part of the suppliments I was taking had triggered a massive hypothyridic response, my thyroid shut off, all the carbs, protein and calories I was injesting was being converted directly to fat. The Air Force did not like that at all. I went to 3 nutrition classes, did mandatory supervised exercise, wore a heart monitor and had my exercise tracked. The last 2.5 years of my enlistment was met with medical work ups, exercise, and warnings of being kicked out. I did everything I could to make until my contract was released from stop loss due to 9/11. My original out processing class turned into a stop loss class half way through. For those that don't know, stop loss is when the military says you can't leave, even if you have completed your signed contract, if they have an official need to keep you, they can. So my last full year was hell. Weigh ins, tapings, blood work. All in all, I made it out by the skin of my teeth. Which is sad because I signed up, with all intentions of doing 20+ years.   I bounced around jobs a bit, got my degree and started doing IT work for the government. And I love it. I do not however love the weight I've been stuck with.   I'm being banded on the 18th of Nov. I was hoping for my birthday, but my surgeon doesn't do surgery on Tuesdays. Sigh. Friday is close enough.   I'm glad I found this website, the information and support from it's members has and will prove to be a very accepted crutch. Thanks for reading and Stay Strong! Matt
