I have read/heard that many surgeons will not do WLS if someone's BMI is over 50. I was wondering if anyone have experienced this? As of right now my BMI is around 70, and to get down to 50 I would have to lose almost 100lbs! I was just wondering if anyone else had to lose a great deal of weight before getting WLS due to high BMI

My step dad was 60 BMI or close and he was able to have surgery. They will probably want you to lose some weight. He did 6 months of dieting. Best bet is to talk to the Dr. When I went to the seminary I know there were people with high BMI's.

my BMI is 69-70? and all my doc required was that I try to lose 30lbs before, so I could shrink my liver a little bit to make surgery easier.

There are definately doctors that will accept high BMI patients both in the US and Mexico. We have a more than a few members here that started where you are.

My BMI was 61. One doctor said I had to lose 45 lbs before he would even schedule and 70 before he would operate (to get under 50 BMI). Another doctor said no pre-op weight loss needed. She has operated on patients BMI>70. I ended up going with the first doctor (due to self-pay issues) and am very glad I did. It gave me 4 1/2 months to get into the new habits, making this transition better. (I'm a teacher so I knew I couldn't have surgery until the summer anyway.) They also supported me with NUT and medical weight loss. I lost 65 lbs before surgery, BMI was around 51. No one ever mentioned the 70 lb goal. Obviously I just needed to minimize complications and prove my commitment.

On another note, I noticed you're not too far from me. (I'm in Dayton.) The doctor I went with was in Cincinnati but the other one I mentioned is in Dayton. Let me know if you want any info if you don't already have someone in mind.

You went to Dr. Curry (seen it your siggy) That's who I'm actually planning on going to! My cousin went to him for her lapband, and I have heard nothing but good things about him! I have already started changing my habits, I guess I should just buckle up and get motivated so I can get this baby done! The good thing is my family dr. is REALLY working with me too!! I'm just so impatient. lol.

Very cool! My aunt had her band there and she referred me. I liked the whole team, it's a very comprehensive approach. Just be ready for them to tell you that you need to lose some before surgery. It sucks and it does seem daunting but, like I said, it was the best thing for me. I NEVER thought I could lose that much weight without surgery but everyone there was so supportive, encouraging and REALISTIC! They will probably recommend one of their medical weight loss programs for you. Plus, MANY of the employees have had a WLS surgery themselves. If they explain to you why they want you to lose weight first it makes a lot of sense and puts you in the most advantageous position. Just don't get discouraged, at least until after you have your first appointment.

Btw, did you know they just opened an office in Dayton? They are only there 2-3 days a month but I'm sure it would be more convenient to do a lot of your pre-op stuff there than going all the way to Cincy. The main office is only 45 minutes from me but it was still a bit of a hassle trying to get there 1-2x a month during my pre-op dieting.

Good luck! Message me if you have any questions!

It was actually supposed to open in March. I started going there the end of January and was super excited about it. Ha! It kept getting delayed and just opened about a month ago. It's on Patterson and Stewart near UD and Miami Valley Hospital. I think the actual address is on Patterson.

Are you going to do the initial consultation soon? I would suggest meeting with them before you start trying to lose weight on your own. That way, you know how much you need to lose and they can help you. Even if you don't plan on having surgery for a while or think it will take a while to lose the weight, you only have to do that stuff once and they will keep in contact with you throughout the process. I was self-pay and they were very generous with their pre-op services for my weight loss. They did everything they could to help me, especially with keeping costs down.

If you haven't already, go to one of his seminars. If you schedule your first appointment at the seminar you get a discount on the program fee.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
