It's Official!!! I will be a Jan. 2010 bandster. My surgery has been scheduled for Jan. 13. I see there are at least two others having surgery that day. I'll be very interested to keep up with you two in particular. We can compare every step of the way.

Hi Everyone,

I finally got a surgery date: January 14th, 2010! Boy has this been a long trip. Twenty five days away! I can hardly believe it. The entire process has taken me over a year.

Has anyone had to lose weight before surgery? At my last weigh-in I was about 250; I'm worried I've gained. The nurse said "well, don't gain weight, whatever you do." Then comes Halloween, Thanksgiving, and now, Christmas. Ugh. I know I have to start a liquid diet beginning Jan 5.

To the questions asked: I am 40, on insurance, and I'm doing this because I need more than a diet group to help me lose 100 lbs. I think we all have similar reasons.

If anyone has any pre-op advice for me, I'd be grateful!

Take care all -

I do have to lose weight for my surgery. My Doc says it is proof that your liver is shrinking. They have to move it around for the surgery and if it is full of fat it will be really fragile. That is my Doc prospective on it. Any advice I can give? Well I am just trying to get everything done before surgery so there won't be as much for my family afterward. It seems like every Doc has a differnt gameplan so I would follow you own Docs instruction to a t. Your paying him alot of money for his direction.

Good luck and congrats!

Hi all!

I was just banded yesterday, Dec. 22, 2009. I know that I was so curious about the process and was looking for people who had recently been there done that so I know you must be feeling the same. I've blogged my surgical experience if you'd like to check it out. A Girl Named Sweet Pete: Lap Band surgery recovery

Also, to answer your questions about pre-op diet. Please please take this seriously!! My doc required I lose 30 lbs prior. And I just "couldn't" do it. Then Dr. threatened that he wouldn't do the surgery if I didn't lose 15 lbs during the 2 week liquid diet. Talk about stressed out!! He planned to weigh me the day before the scheduled surgery and make his decision then. OMG! I freaked out for two weeks. I cried and excersised and didn't cheat once. It was not worth it. Please do what your doc requires and really try. Don't do what us fatty's always do and make every excuse in the book as to why "I can't". You need this surgery, don't mess it up like I almost did. I ended up losing surgeons required amount and a few extra but it wasn't worth the stress.

Good luck to ya'll, you can do this! :)

I am scheduled for January 11, 2010. My insurance approval and surgery date was taken care of in just one week. I was actually told I could have it done on the 4th of January but that would have meant that I couldn't have Christmas dinner with my family. I opted to move it back one week. I am stressing out about being able to stick with the liquid diet two week prior to surgery, and then, two more weeks post-op. I also wonder how I am going to be able to stick with such a strict diet for the rest of my life. I am starting to second guess if this is the right direction to take.

I getting banded on January 5 at 11:00 am. I live in Connecticut and I am excited. A little scared but I have to do this. I am 37 years old and is taking 5 pills a day for high blood pressure. 3 in the morning and 2 at night. The pills make me feel awful at work. In order to alleviate the drowsiness at work I have to set the alarm for 4am take the pills try to go back to sleep so that when I get to work for 8:30 the feeling will at least be wearing out. Thank God I have an understanding boss who is truly rooting for me. the best part is I work at a college so I am off for the entire time because we are on break! Sweet deal. I just started my Optifast shake diet that my doctor recommends and it is hard. I feel really hungry. Last night I had some bland broccoli. I have to do this and the protien bars aren't that bad. The shake actually taste like something my mother use to give us as children called nutriment. Even my kids don't think its bad.

I have been peeking around this site and it has helped me soooooo much. Just reading the other stories I feel mentally prepared. I know what to pray about like the nausea and the gas pains. I know to bring a pillow for the ride home and other neat stuff. So I really want to just give all pre & post banders a shout out.

We can do this!

Kiesha

Dawnlee, I was feeling the same way for awhile. I realize though that what I am doing is going to kill me and that I need a new way to live. Doc says once the weight starts falling off and you can start to do things again (cross your legs, turn heads, fit in the seat at the movie theatre) these are things you will hold tight too and refuse to surrender to that bowl of mac and cheese or double fudge cake. Just think of all the things you have sacrificed to be big. I have given up time with my family because I was too tired or embarassed to go out. Great sex again because I am too tired and my horomones are out of whack. I am hardly in any family pics. I can't ride the roller coasters with my son. He almost was hit by a car because he ran from me and I couldn't keep up, TWICE. Start thinking about the good this will do for your life and your family. Also be really sure this is what you want before you go through with it. I hope this helps this is just how I moved from being unsure to total confidence. My Doc has just really laid things out for me. He says the first 50 will be hard but once I taste success I won't want to give it back up.

Good luck on your journey.

JeweI, thanks for your words of encouragement. I too have been out of my family's lives. I haven't seen my sister for 9 years now (at my mother's funeral). I refuse to have any pics taken of me, and I haven't met my husband's family, except for mom and dad, since we have been married, 10 years. All I want to do is hide inside my home. It is pretty sad how we stop living life because of being fat.

Thanks again!

HELLOOOO JAN 2010 BANDSTERS! My date is Jan. 12 with Dr. McKeen in San Jose. I was not put on ANY pre-op diet! I can't figure out why so many doctors require it and then others don't. I have rheumatoid arthritis for which I take many drugs including immunosuppresants so my worries re the surgery have more to do with that than anything else. I will heal more slowly because of the drugs I take and will be more prone to infection. Anyone else dealing with anything like this? I don't live in San Jose so I'll need to fly home post-surgery. I was planning to fly 3 days post surgery (the surgeon said I could fly in 2 days!) but after reading a lot about people's recovery here I've decided to stay in San Jose for a week before flying. Would love, love, love to hear from any of you guys and please let us stay in touch and be a support for each other. It's a journey we share.

I am getting banded on January 18 and I am on day 5 of my liquid pre-op diet (I have to do it for 4 weeks) and I have to say it's getting better. My nutritionist told me by the 5th day your body will stop asking for food because it knows that it's not going to get any and she was right. I don't have those hunger pains that I had on day 1 and 2. I have to have 4 Protein Shakes a day that don't go above 250 calories and have at least 20 grams of Protein. I can have all the broth Soup and SF Jello I want. Not to mention Water, diet v8 juice and SF drink mixes. I have found some protein shakes that were about 220 calories and 51 grams of protein that weren't too bad. EAS whey powder mixed with milk is actually pretty good. Nobody said this was going to be easy and it's not forever. We will get to eat again, it's just going to be a different way of eating.

Northern Mist...

Perhaps Dr. Nizzi is involved in the research U of M bariatric clinic is conducting. I understand that many hospitals in Michigan are participating. Were you asked to join a ten-year study?

Take care and have great results.

I was asked to join a study but honestly it's been two years since they mentioned it and I forgot if it's U of M or not. I'll ask at my pre-op appt.

Thanks and you take care too!

Merry Christmas!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
