OMG my BMI is HIGH!

Recommended Posts

So I went to my appointment this morning and I am almost 50% fat! My BMI is 46.4! How on EARTH does that happen??? Am I the only one with a BMI that high? I have been on a low carb diet for 3 blasted years! I finally went off the deepend for lunch and ate pizza. (I am paying for it now...tummy ache). I want to cuss and throw things. I went to my PCP this afternoon and told him and he shook his head and told me I should be in the 20's to be "normal range". Then he had the guts to tell me to go on the ADA diet and keep my calories to about 1000, and he noted that in my chart. But he also said he would write a letter to my insurance company recommending the band.

Flibber-de-gibbit I am so disgusted with myself 46.4% my only hope is that it is good news for the approval process.

Please tell me I am a Normal canidate. I just am so sad, mad, digusted, and sick. :P

Hey Poodles - I'm sorry your consult was upsetting but I hope it went well otherwise and if you get a band you'll get your BMI down to 20! I was upset my 1st meeting too b/c they said I should weigh like 125 based on the "charts" and It made me feel so much fatter than I am,,, but then I realized the "charts" are just standardized but really I do have a big frame and I could pick my own goal of 150! Anyways, that was kindof rambling there - I'm tired! Good luck!

My BMI was also 46 when I started. I'm now down 40 lbs, and my BMI has dropped to 39.5 at 3 months post op.

It's a rude awakening when you find out what your current BMI is compared to what it should be. Don't be disgusted with yourself - be proud of yourself for having the courage to get the band and do something about it!

Mine was about the same, now it is 35 or so, but my body fat % is 55%....ewwwwwww that is terrible...from all the years of starving myself and losing lean muscle tissue. it really disgusts me when I think that 55% of my body is FAT!!

My bmi was 49 when I started looking into being banded. My bmi now is 39 it has droped so much since I've lost weight and so will yours. Your not alone we all pretty much came from the same place that your at and the band has helped us lower our body weight as well as our bmi... not to mention has helped our health/self esteem/confidence and the list goes on wih NSV'S or (Non scale Victories)

Be proud of your self for coming to the point that you have asked for help and want to gain the greatest tool for weight loss ever invented (in my book LOL!!!) and just know that one day you will be telling your self this was the best desicion you could have ever made and say good bye to that high bmi and hello to a new you!!!

Good luck!!!

First of all, your BMI doesn't really mean squat. It's a tool to get your band, but It doesn't really mean anything else after that.

According the the BMI tables, I should weigh the same exact amount as a woman from SE Asia, with a tiny little skeleton. The only way that could happen is if I had some wasting disease and lost 50 pounds of muscle mass. Not gonna happen.

I will never be able to weigh what the BMI charts want me to weigh, nor should I want that.

According to the BMI charts, all atheletes are considered overweight or Obese, and in some cases, they care considered MO.

Yep, muscle and bone weighs a lot more than fat, so if you've got 50 pounds of lean muscle on you, the BMI calc will count you as obese! That's insane! I work physically every day becayse I own a small cleaning company and I do the cleaning myself. When I tell people what I weigh, they always say 'wow you carry it so well'... not really, I just got muscle hidden underneith my fat tummy and huge bottom. Yes, I do have fat that I need to lose... but I also have muscle which I will never lose and my BMI will never be at 23... I do still have lots to lose, because as much as I would like to think I have a lot of muscle hidden under the fat, it isn't THAT much. Don't feel bad about how much you have to lose, be proud that now you have a tool to make it happen, and it WILL happen for you.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
