Hi Happy! You know I am not sure if we see Horgan, I am guessing yes. Did you go to the seminar? They told us there that wed see a few people including a dietitian and physiologist up to a 3 hour appointment.

Where in the Inland Empire are you? We lived in Rancho Cucamonga for a while a few years ago.

How did you wind up choosing UCSD...they are so far for you?

I'm not in La Jolla, but in San Diego. Getting banded on 9/15. Would still love to share stories. There's a small SD lap band sub group on this board that meets once a month. You might want to check that out.

Good Luck to you!

Kim

It will only take me a little over an hour to get there vs the 3 hours it took to get to the other group I started with. I have my consult and seminar on the same day. Are you going this tomorrow or next Wed? Lots of people to see on one appt , that is good actually so they are getting good information. my last consult with the other office lasted all of ten min with the dr and the psych eval entailed the so called psychologist talking to me literally 5 min writing a couple of notes. I told him I wasn't crazy and that was about it!!!! What a joke it was.

My dietician talked to me once on the phone and emailed me some guidelines and sent me a questioniare once a month to fill out. that was about it. joke too! So I am glad for the 3 hrs.

I have lost almost 14 lb trying to inact the guidelines, for a month now I have subsituted a Protein shake for one meal. I have super increased my Water intake and walk and bike ride a little. When faced with a cake I take a bite then leave the room LOL shocking my husband . smaller plate, one serving then put the plate immediately in the sink and leave the kitchen til the kids clear the table. my portion sizes are not right yet. baby steps. I am glad that the bit I have lost I will not gain back, hoping to have surgery before I fall on my face! usually I can make it 3-4 on a diet or program then crash and burn. All it takes is one night at a buffet or the wrong addicting food. for me it is fried.

Hello!

Well we had our consult today (my husband and I are both doing it). We were there FOREVER! my appointment was at 1.30 and my husbands at 2pm and we didnt leave the office till 5.30! They are great, very meticulous. At the end we got the go for surgerey and they will call us with dates. We will have 3 weeks of liquid diet before surgerey and should be banded by the end of September. So now I am officially weighed in and I can not gain one pound if I do they cancel the surgerey. So now I must be good and start loosing so it will be an easier fasting time.

Details eh? Well it was kinda boring with bouts off stress and anxiety. You check in at the desk and fill out a bit more paperwork then they call you in and weigh and measure you, take your blood pressure and then place you in a room and you WAIT! One by one they all come in, the dietitian, shrink, doc, surgeon. They each take turns with you, asking a lot of the same questions over and over to decide if they will do the band for you. I felt like a sorority girl waiting to see if I got pledged, very nerve wracking because there is so much waiting. The magazines in the office suck so you might want to bring a book and eat before you go so your tummy doesn't growl I can not believe we were there SOOOOOOOOOOO long!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
