So... I've been lurking on this website for atleast an hour a day for the past three weeks. Now that things are getting rough and my life is changing I think it's finally time to come out of the dark and introduce myself so I can get the support and encouragment that made me fall in love with this site.

I'm 19 and a sophmore at The University of Maryland, College Park. I'm 5'6" and 303 lbs. yuck. I've struggled with my weight ever since I can remember and have always been the biggest out of all of my friends. I've excused it for the past 5 years because I've been an athlete (Soccer, track, and rugby, and weight lifting) however, In february I broke my lovely athletic foot and gained 40 pounds!! This has really tipped me over the edge.

As far as where I am on my journey, I have my first apt. with my surgeon on wednesday of next week!! However, the main inspiration for this post is the fact that my mom is in this journey with me and has her own list of things I need to do before she gives me the go ahead and quite honestly. I have been screwing up big time! I think the fact that I am such a "dont wash a car before you take it to the car wash" type of girl, now that I know this surgery is in my future its like I'm eating worse than ever :juggle: and my mom is no joke. she WILL not let me get the surgery if I dont prove to her I can do this.

I told myself I wouldn't post until I had my surgery date but... I think GETTING to surgery is the half of it! and if I want to make this real to me. real to my mom. MY REALITY I've got to start seeking support and doing this.

I have no boyfriend, hubby, life partner, not even a booty call (or a worthy one i should say) : I WANT THAT

I dont have that college girl swagger : I WANT THAT

I dont have kids : I WANT THAT

I... want to start making memories, i want to live like I've never lived, I want....to be healthy: I WANT THIS

so ... thats it. thats all I got, I'm just here to meet some people at the same point I am on this journey, to get some encouragment from people ahead of me, and to learn about what my new life WILL be like.

GET AT ME

Hello and welcome! I really enjoyed your post! Your mom knows you best, of course, but the band REALLY helps you stick to a healthy eating schedule. You don't need to overindulge now because you WILL be able to eat later, most likey. I can still eat pizza, hamburgers, fries, enchiladas, lasagna...you name it. I just dont' eat it often and when I do, don't eat a lot of it. I eat a piece of pizza (no crust) and am full for about 4-6 hours. So...you do what your Mom says (LOL) because you aren't going to starve and be miserable forever. Show her you've got the juice!

There are some who are so tight they only eat what we call "sliders" (yogurt,Soups, ice cream) but that tightness is a choice. You'll always be in control.

Good luck!

I totally understand what you are saying, and am in the beginning stages of this process myself. I have had my first consultation, seminar and I meet the requirements, my status is pending insurance approval. I have been having the same problems as you with my cravings and diet completely out of control, but I KNOW I can do it and WILL do it with the band...you WILL do it too!! Good luck with everything.:juggle:

Good luck to you! This is a great site with lots of support and plenty of answers. Having a family member going thru this with you is wonderful. You and mom will certainly have some "bonding" moments....you can compare port site scars :juggle:. My sister and I are planning to support each other as we go forward on this journey. I know it'll be easier for both of us since we'd smack the other for bringing home Whoppers or something. We might end up fighting for the last Protein drink though.

Happy Banding,

PTG

I am going with True Results and my doctor is Ken Hollis in Houston,TX. I have read some of the other posts and have heard some good things about him. I am excited because I originally tried to go with Journeylite and was very disappointed with them so I switched to True Results. I am so glad I did it because I already feel 100% sure about the staff, facility, and safety. FYI we are in the same height/weight neighborhood I am 5'7 330 pounds....

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
