Who knows about your surgery?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on Friday and I have told very few people about it. My husband, my parents and one other friend know. If I'm honest, part of me is embarrassed to have to go to this extreme to lose weight, but the other part of me just doesn't want to be under the microscope of people watching to see if I'm losing weight. I'm perfectly comfortable in my decision to keep it to myself, but I was curious if others are letting more people know.

I still have 2 months left of my 6 month preop diet (insurance company required). I have told my family and friends, but I really dont want to tell anyone at work. They will figure it out at some point, but I dont want to be watched when I eat. I work at a hospital, so everyone eats in the cafeteria. I am sure my lunch group will figure it out within a week or so, but maybe I will eat at my desk until I am on real food.< /p>

I'm not even vaguely embarassed. To me the embarassment was to weigh 405 and not do something about it. As you can guess, I tell. Even the little cutey guy at the local pharmacy counter knows and is a big supporter! I have had only positive words and encouragement. No one has asked me "why not just exercise and diet" I am lucky, or blessed, or something. I have a fairly friendly outgoing personality anyway and i guess that makes a difference. Some things ARE private of course, but for me, the band just isn't one of them. I'm proud of it, happy to have it, glad to educate anyone who will listen about it.

If you are embarrassed, you may not want to tell many people, especially at first. Me? I didn't care who knew. I figured it was easier to tell people myself, than to have them find out later from someone else, because you KNOW people will talk.

If you are worried about people watching you for weight loss, explain that this is a way to slowly lose weight, but it should make it easier to KEEP it off. That way, they don't expect you to lose weight too fast.

Honestly I will be banded in 2 days. I feel the same way about keeping it private. For me its a as to need to know basis. My brother who is a doctor doesn't even know. I am embarrassed that I have gained this amount of weight. post-op I don't want to be under the micro-scope as well. My few personal friends who know I am being banded know I have already lost nearly 10lbs and are already saying,, maybe you shouldn't have the procedure done..

In every circle there are always gossips. People can be cruel and honestly I have learned something. Things aren't always everyone else's business.

I have pretty much told some people I work with. I work at a hospital. I've told my dad, my husband, and that's about it for family. Any extended family I won't tell until I for sure am knowing I'm having the surgery.

I do as well feel that this is a private thing. I am however NOT embarrassed of this. I think I should be amended for taking care of myself and wanting to have a more better life.

Hey there. My surgery is Wednesday and I am getting very nervous. I havne't told many people either. My family knows and a few friends and then in our office we only have 2 people working so they know b/c I have to be off but other than that I haven't told anyone. I am embarrased to have to have to use this measure to lose weight but hey at least I am doing something about it. The only reason I just haven't let everyone know is b/c I just don't like everyone knowing everything about me. Its not that they won't realize that I am loosing weight but I just don't want them knowing up front. It will be ok though b/c everyone is going to ask eventually. Good luck on Friday and hope all goes well!

well if u tell 1 person, the whole world will know...I told a few people before my surgury and then after that everybody was allowed to know. My mom didnt want everybody knowin before I had surgury because she feared they would talk me out of it...But she didnt understand that I didnt care what people think and that I do what I want with my body. But anyways, after the surgury, I didnt even have to tell anybody. They all knew. Because people have mouths and dont kno how to keep it shut. But everybody is supportive and are really happy for me! Once u have the surgury what can they say??? They will be happy for you...Before u have ur surgury, you think u can tell 5 people but your really telling 10 and so on and so on cuz in the end they each will tell ATLEAST 1 person...Then u look extra dumb in the end. You start tellin people "yeah i lost weight by diet and excersize" but they really kno the lap band is givin extra support. I would never wanna set myself up for something like that. People can know because its there to help me and maybe they can be helped as well. I'll never be embarressed of my band, I love it :crying: But some people are different so if you think its best to keep it to your self then do it

I'm not ashamed. I agree with restlessmonkey, I was ashamed when I was fat but not because of other people more at myself. I don't really care what other people think of me. I care what I think of me. Also if talking about it can help someone else all the better. I don't just walk up and tell people but if they ask how I've lost so much weight I tell them a lot of hard work and the help of lap band.

Rocky Mountain Mamma,

I felt a lot like you and only my Mom, husband and one close friend know about my surgery. I was not embarressed, but more afraid that people would wonder why more weight wasn't coming off, etc.

I am glad that I have kept my surgery private - no regrets, and really no temptation to tell anyone. When people ask what I have been doing to lose weight, I say that I decided to take care of myself, and started working out and eatting right. All true!

Good luck, and do what works for you!

I don't have a surgery date yet, but expect to by mid next week. I have had many appointments to have my pre-op testing, psych eval, ect. People at work are all very kind and worry why I am gone so much. I told pretty much everyone in my office, those who don't know yet will soon, I am sure. My parents and sister know but I haven't told extended family. I think I may wait until after surgery to tell them. I have noticed that almost everyone has something to say about the surgery... mostly good but sometimes not so much. I don't feel like listening to these people spout off so I won't tell them until after. I don't really care who knows, I just don't want to hear everyones input. I am obviously extremely over weight and most people I know have seen me through many weight losses and gains. I am comfortable with the decision I made and that is all that matters to me.

I told my partner, some friends and 4 co-workers, and that's it! No one in my family knows. They will try to convince me not to do it and judge me. Every one has different circumstances. Therefore, you just do what is best for you. Eventually they will all find out... but you will be so healthy and looking so good, it will not matter what they think or say!

As of now, only my husband knows that I have my consult scheduled for Aug. 2nd. I am extremely excited and looking forward to the journey! I'm not sure who/when I will tell other people. I have mentioned it on the phone with my mom and she is supportive but doesn't know that I plan to go ahead ASAP! Good luck to everyone!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
