Am I just sick or has my band slipped?

I know this question has been asked a million times and I did read through the responses I could find before posting but I'm still not sure and hoping some of you could give me some insight. I had my band placed last August and though I've only lost 40 lbs I'm happy with it.

Anyway, I've been nauseous for the last 3 days and have pain in my gut right where the top insision is. It feels hard when you press it too. I've eaten oatmeal twice in the last 2 days and all went well but I'm still pretty darn nauseous and just trying not to throw up. I just don't feel well but its making me worry my band has slipped. I do not have any coughing at night but do have small burping (like when you have indigestion) even though I haven't eaten anything.

Whats your take? Sick or Possible Slip? (Oh, and there is no way on earth I'm pregnant. My husband is currently deployed.)

You are probably just sick, but if you get worse you should contact your Dr. or call Mon. if you are not feeling much better.

You could have a partial block from something that got stuck in your band. With a partial block, some food, especially liquids and soft foods will still go down for a while but you'll start swelling and it will get more and more uncomfortable. If that happens, get to your doctor. It's an easy fix. They just take the Fluid out and have you drink Water to flush the food through. Sometimes they keep the fluid out for a few days if they think you've swelled to let the swelling go down.

Since the 4th is a holiday and you don't want to be in the ER then! call your doc tomorrow and run it past them. Let them make this call for you.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question so please bear with me. I'm just wondering if this experience is normal and/or if anyone else has had it: The first meal I eat during the day, usually around 11 AM or so (I know, too late), it seems like if I eat anything solid at all, even if it's well-chewed, it doesn't want to go down. You guys all know "that feeling". Sometimes it's a dull pain, others it's that and mild nausea too, and I either have to wait it out and suffer or force it back up and spit it out. I'm talking like 3 bites of toast or a few french fries (yeah I know, shouldn't be eating those) but it's pretty much anything that started out solid. It's like my stomach opening is totally closed. Then as the day goes by, or an hour or so after I've had those uncomfortable feelings, my stomach opens up (at least it feels like it does) and I'm able to eat a normal amount of just about anything as long as I chew it up well. But that first meal, for some reason -- my stomach is like, sorry, we aren't open for business yet today, come back later. Has anybody else experienced this and does anybody have any idea why it happens? I have a 10cm band with 2cc's in it. My surgery was in February of this year.

I find that a cup of coffee/tea first thing in the morning allows me to eat something for Breakfast a little easier. I did try raisin toast one morning before I had tea and I had the same effect you mention. Try something warm first and see if that helps. Good luck.

I'd bet that the early am tea helps as much because it's liquid as it does because its warm. Hydrated bandsters usually have happy non-schizo bands.

I have never heard that. Does this mean that if you stay well hydrated, you are able to eat on a more even keel, rather than the amounts varying so greatly from one day to the next?

Petalpusher let me put it this way. I've always gotten 64 oz of Water in (plus tea etc..but always at least that much water) per my surgeon and never had a schizo band. If I can eat 3 ounces of steak today, I'm fairly sure I can have 3 ounces of steak tomorrow. and the next day. And so on. There's never been something that I could eat one day and not the next. OK? That's just me...not a scientific sample.

However I have a friend who posts on here who had real HELL with her band and ability to eat. So I asked my doc (LOVE him) why sometimes you can eat something and other times not and he said "Hydration. If you stay well hydrated things go through easier; if you aren't, they don't."

I start each morning out with a bottle of water and then go from there and never ever have problems...

I passed the info on to my friend who was so happy she offered me her first born (I politely declined LOL) She said she still has an occasional odd moment but that info essentially saved the band for her; she'd gotten so down about being able to eat something one day and the next barely anything. And she said she NEVER got her water in. Within one day of getting 64 ounces...problem resolved.

SO...all I can say is odds are hydration plays a big role. I'm sure you'll find people it doesn't help, and I'm sure you'll find some who say that's BS, but I say try it; it can't hurt you. If it helps...who cares?

Thanks everyone. I'm still feeling a bit funny and not really eating. I did just make myself eat some chili from Wendy's because I'm sure my body could use some Protein right about now. It seems to go down ok, but I still feel so nausious. So, I guess if its not better by Monday I'm going to call my Dr. and ask what they think. I'm schdeduled for a fill next week too but I don't know if I'll get it.

Ineeda - hope you are feeling better. Was it just a bug? Hope your band is ok.

Cypress. My band is "closed for business" until about 2:00 pm. My doctor wants me to have a Protein Shake for breakfast every day for the rest of my life (well... except for special occasions) and I have that about 10:00 am. No problems with liquids, I like my shakes, and so that works out well for me. Then I have my lunch around 2:00. If I try to eat lunch much before that..... YIKES!! dinner about 7 - this strange schedule works out perfect for me because nights have always been rough for me (food choices), so the later I have dinner the better my night goes. Sure seems like there is a LOT of trial and error before getting into a routine that works for you and your band. It took me awhile anyway. Good luck to you.

Just wanted to respond to Restless' post - you should have taken my first born - she's wonderful :smile2: Restless did give me the keep hydrated advice and let me tell you - it did make a world of difference. When I drink like I should, I have a lot less problems with foods getting stuck and PBing. It seems like such a simple thing - but no one had ever told me that. Sure does make sense doesn't it? I read about so many people who are so tight in the mornings - well.... haven't had anything to drink for at least 8 hours... right? Hot tea, coffee... those help... cause they are getting you back to that hydrated state that your band likes. May not work for everyone.. but it sure did help me. I am still very greatful for her going and getting that advice from her doctor. It's amazing how much help you can get from the nice people here at LBT. I've made some great friends here and feel very lucky that Restless is one of them.

Can I talk or what?????? :)

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
