You absolutley do not have to tell him anything! You simply put in your request for time off, it is a medical matter and that's it. He will approve your time off and there should be no further comment. If he is educated, he should know that for him to inquire beyond what you have volunteered to tell him is an invasion of privacy. There are HIPPA laws to protect you. Don't be intimidated by him, just put in your request for time off, at take it . Speak to your Hr Department if you have further concerns. I can tell you from experience as being THE BOSS, we (bosses) are very sensitive to those issues, at least everyone in my company was. Remember, you don't have to disclose anything that you don't want to.

I agree with Jenna. Or you could try my routine: blush (if you're a pale white person), look shyly away, and say it's a delicate matter. He'll figure it's either a gyne problem or hemorrhoids. If he pushes you, you can assure him that your prognosis is good, and you'll be back to work soon. Good luck!

I wouldnt share the details, its not like you have a close relationship or anything. And if he asks, I'd fib, say gall bladder or something.

I dont think having a lap band is anything to be ashamed of, but at the same time, you dont want all and sundry knowing either, because some people will make those kind of judgements. Unless you suffer from being obese, you simply cannot know what the problems involved are.

If you really want to put him off asking any more questions, just say its girls stuff, lol.

Avoid the whole discussion by using a week's worth of vacation time for the surgery.

Save your sick time in case there is some complication or you get sick.

Remember you are making a commitment to follow-up appointments every month plus bloodwork plus who knows what. You never know when you will need to take a day.

Take advantage of the fact that you can schedule this a month or more in advance.

Since everyone is in agreement that there is no privacy at work and your boss will find out from the medical department anyway, don't get yourself caught up in telling a lie or half truth if he will find out anyway.

Well, if you do tell him you are going to have your gall bladder out, then aren't you going to look special if you have to have it out for real?

Honesty is always the best policy.

Thats exactly how I feel. I'm not going to tell him, I'm just gonna say its personal. I'm not ashamed of the band what so ever, its just that I feel he won't understand (yes one of those).

The only thing I can do is talk to medical when I hand in the paperwork and ask them not to say anything. If they blab, then they blab. I know that when companies say "Privacy" they are full of moose kaka. I've seen it over and over. But I can try.

Ivan, I have a LOAD of sick time to take rather than use my vacation. Thats one good thing about the company I work for. But thats a good suggestion, thanks !!

Thanks everyone for your advice :)

I wouldn't tell him. It's really none of his business. I told no one at my work. I just said "surgery." Let him think it's a female problem or something.

Hi, I know you already made your decision, but I will swear I work for your boss's twin. I had major problems with my boss when I had twins and then over back surgery I had 2 years ago. He was in the Navy for years, attended the Navy academy and is super fit. I didn't want to tell him what I was going to do, then a co-worker suggested that I do tell him because he is such a health nut. I did decide to tell him and he was way more supportive than I ever dreamed of. So you never know, he could surprise you. I would probably keep quiet until the last minute, then let him know. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Julie

This might work for you too...

My boss almost denied my vacation request about an hour ago, so I just said, "Well I really didn't want to discuss this with anyone, which is why I requested vacation in the first place, but I am having surgery and need the time to recover. I will be back to work no problem in a few days though." I think he assumed it was "girly," but serious since I was keeping it close to the vest. He didn't push any further, and granted the time without question at that point. Not dishonest in the least, maybe just intentionally misleading? Hope all is going/went well.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
