2 questions: Sick? Calories?

Recommended Posts

I thought of another question to throw out there.

I am sooooo afraid of PBing or barfing. Deathly afraid, but fear makes me behave!!!!

Have any of you gotten sick with food poisoning or the flu?

How did you survive that? It scares me.

I had surgery on Friday the 5th. I'm supposed to be on Clear Liquids for a week. What is the appropriate calorie intake?

The first day I had almost 300 cals.

The second day I had 350ish

The third day I had 350-400

Today I've had about 400.

I am so hungry at times but as soon as I take a few swallows, I feel fine.

How did you all do it? How many cals were you ingesting durring the clear liquid phase?

I've often wondered this. I mean if you're ill with something gastric and vomiting, wont all the stomach contents be in the bottom part of your stomach? It would surely cause a lot of strain coming back up. Gosh, it would probably hurt a lot too!

I know they explained this to me the day I was getting banded but I can not remember. I guess I was just to excited and wanted to be banded already. My question is what is Pbing??

I am 5 weeks out and have had PB problems at least 2 times a week. Here is what it is to me and what I have learned: You are very tight in the morning. I cannot get any food to go down without sticking no matter how many times I chew so have resorted to a high Protein Slimfast for Breakfast daily. This actually makes my breakfast decision easy and I poor it over crushed ice which is refreshing. The best way to describe PBing is that food gets stuck at your band site and won't go down. You get a bad chest pain until it passes. Your body will produce a ton of saliva trying to get it to pass so if the food is blocking the way this "slime" will fill your mouth and you are spitting it out into every paper towel/napkin you can find. (note - keep a roll of paper towels and plastic grocery bags in your car!) I have found that bending over the sink will either help force the food down or speed up the reverse route! Once you vomit the food up (and it's just a little bit) you feel fine. My episodes last 15-30 minutes. You CANNOT drink liquids in an effort to "wash the food down" Drinking only adds a liquid level above the stuck food and you will definitely vomit it back up. Food that's gotten stuck for me: eggs, waffle, hard lettuce (stick to soft greens or spinach), chicken, mashed potatoes. In some cases I was not conscious to chew 30+ times and swallowed a little too soon) After an episode I have liquids and soft foods for the next few hours. I am learning how to eat to avoid these problems. lunch is usually Soup and salad, tuna, humus, healthy choice dinner, etc. Afternoon snack is a sugar free pudding with whipped cream or an icecream bar. Evening dinner goes down easily so I eat whatever I make for the family. Tonight was steak with salad. I am never that hungry and because I am continuing to lose will probably put off my first fill past the 8 week mark.

I was thinking that the PBing is sort of like your guardian angel telling you OK - this is not good for you or you are eating too much. It's that little voice in your head telling you to slow down. You must focus 100% on your chewing/eating to avoid PB. Twice I had episodes because I was talking while eating and swallowed my food before it was mushed. After trying so many different diets, this is a small price to pay for such great results.

....don't trying talking on the phone while chewing your chicken or you will learn what PBing is.....
LOL .. add to that, don't try driving while eating a KFC Twister ...

Barbaraan,

I couldn't of described it more perfectly then you. I learned my lesson once when I was in the mall trying to eat lunch and I felt a pb coming, so I ran to my car. Well before you knew it I was pbing all over the place that was the last for me, I had to drive home, clean myself and the inside of my car. Now I keep a roll of paper towels and paper cups in my car, just in case....

Hi!

My name is Julie -- I was banded by Dr. Clinch @ Evergreen August 3rd. I'm in the liquid stage and found that I was getting really dizzy. Dr. said he had put the larger band on me and the fluids were just going through. After my one week visit today, I was told to drink Gatorade as I'm not getting enough salt. My liquids have pretty much been Water, tea and crystal light. I've had some Tomato Soup but other than that not much. Dr. said I should be trying to get 60 grams of protien now. Any suggestions?

P. S. I've lost 8 pounds in the one week since surgery. ONLY 167 more to go!

Mercedes and Duckie

Great point about a stomach virus. I don't even want to think about it. I need to ask my doctor.

During the liquid stage I was told not to worry about the calorie intake. You want to get as much of your 64 oz of Fluid in you as possible. We all know it is hard to get that in. You guys should be trying to drink one Protein Shake a day at this point. It helps with hunger and you can get in your vital Protein. I drink Atkins Advantage which has 20 grams of protein and only 2 net carbs and it does not give you as much gas as Slim Fast. Slim Fast only has 10 grams of protein, I recommend that one once you are able to eat more protein foods.

Go take a look at th threads for Proteins and food stages. SF popsicles, fudgesicles and sf Jello and pudding were my friends during that stage. The pudding was good for taking my crushed medicine. I could not eat a whole cup of the pudding, I just got enough to take the meds. (prepackaged pudding)

Good Luck you guys

I am only 11days out and I can eat almost anything! Does that mean something is wrong? I have had mashed potatoes, mushed up spaghetti (very soft) and meatballs, and chocolate. I do get full sooner than before and stay full longer, but I still seem able to eat lots.

There is nothing wrong with you Loulou. Yes you can eat those things but you are not suppose to. I have learned from the ladies here, it is about letting your body heal. If your stomach is busy working on these foods it can't heal in timely manner. Try to stick to your diet that was perscribed because it is for a reason and guess what.....you will see the weight come off even quicker. You had the surgery for a reason so work with your band, not against it. My doctor told me DON'T eat chocolate. Too many calories real quick. Find some Soups you like and use those to reach your goal.

Thanks Teresa, I guess the problem is that I didn't get any food guidelines except - "If you can suck it though a thick straw you can have it" and "calories dont matter at this stage". But I love the way you made it sound as though I need to care for my tummy rather than lecturing me about what to eat (or not eat) - Thankyou.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
