Hi, I am a food addict

Recommended Posts

I say that because for some reason I forget. I had my first fill on friday. I am discouraged because , I don't know what I was expecting.

Before surgery I felt so well educated, so gung ho, feeling so hopeful!

I feel like my eating lately is worse then it was before the surgery. I feel like I can eat unlimited amounts of food. I am rarely hungry, but honestly I never really ate just when I was hungry. I used to eat just to eat.

Before surgery my main demon to deal with was binge eating. I always said, that if I could eliminate the binges I would be just fine. At a younger age, I went through years of bulimia. The purging stopped in my early 20's but the binging never really stopped. Though there were periods when the binging was not so much of an issue.

I really really need to work on the psychological aspect of this band. I so do not want to fail again.

Thanks for listening to my rants.

Hang in there. I used to binge eat as well especially when I was stressed out. Be patient. This might help. Everyday or the night before I would always make my lunch for the day for work. I would measue the volumes out in the 4 oz containers that I bought. Using a stop watch I ate every 3 hours on the dot, even if I was not hungry. I still do it to this day. While drinking lots of Water in between but never less than a half an hour after I ate. Make it a routine and as time goes by, my brain would look at the food as fuel for my body. Go one day at a time, dont scale watch and get fills when needed. if you need to talk with someone that deals with eating disorders, then by all means do it. Good luck and take one day at a time. Eventually and hopefully you will see food for what it is. "fuel for your body"

Thanks for your encouragement. I have had ALOT of therapy over all this and most of the time I have a good grip of the reality of all this. It seems to slip away at times.

It is fairly simple really. Eat to live. :(

I havent been banded yet.( not till next month ), but I didnt really know you COULD binge eat with the band. so im a bit confused =/

You can binge eat on slider foods, icecream, chips, Cookies. They go right through the band. If you choose the correct foods, the band will help you feel satisfied with less food, and you shouldn't get hungry until about 4 hours later once you get the proper restriction. The band doesn't choose foods for you. Please understand it won't make you lose weight.

It will work for you, if you are willing to work it properly.

Little Debbie snack cakes are sliders too, so I have figured out. grr Knowledge is power.

I am learning that even foods that aren't "BAD" can be slider foods. I love Special K Cereal with a pack of splenda and skim milk. I only eat one serving, but I am hungry very shortly after eating it. I think that along with not being able to exercise after surgery (hysterectomy 5 weeks ago) is why I am not losing now. I didn't start eating the Cereal until after my hysterectomy. The dang surgery caused swelling and my band was a little too tight. I didn't want to go for an unfill because I had 4 NEW incisions to join my 6 from banding. I did NOT want them feeling for my port when I had a new incision less than an inch away!!!:cursing:

I guess slider foods can be different for everyone. I guess I just need to trial and error.

Ouch, I hope your incisions are feeling better!

be careful about binge eating with the band. Pay attention to portion size. I'm getting banded later this month, but doctor said that pouch dilation is the highest complication rate he sees. From regular stretching of pouch. Many threads in here discuss the issue / potential problems.

Good luck, I'm know I'll have the same struggles. Hard to get used to the idea of what a real portion size looks like...

if you have good restriction you can not binge. No matter how I try I cannot eat almost anything! Hang in there.

You know you shouldn't be looking for ways to get in the foods you like the most. My problem in life isn't binging but snacking all night long. dinner is not a meal it was a series Snacks. I am consciously trying to reduce the snacking. I feel like I need sweets all the time. Right now my advice for you is don't waste your money. Do the plan stick to a sensible diet fo most days. Don't eat junk but every now and then. Good luck.

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for your post--I am in the same boat!

Have you ever tried or considered OA (Overeaters Anonymous)? I attended some meetings as part of my pre op psych requirement, and found it to be very helpful. I haven't been in awhile, but now that I'm banded and am struggling with 'head hunger' more than anything, I plan to get back to regular meetings.

http://www.oa.org/

And I'm always looking for new friends here on LBT, so please feel free to message me anytime if you want to talk one on one.

Take care,

Val

Thank you so much for your response. I have been to quite a few OA meetings over the years and have even been on retreats and used to be with an online support group that was the non dieting approach to OA. I don't and cannot diet as the way society diets, with the ED. I really do believe that I can work with this band because of the intuitive eating approach.

I bring the old OA books out at times and it really helps. Thanks for the reminder.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
