pain in the middle, lower, abdomen

Recommended Posts

Well i've had my band for about 8 months now and i've lost 65 lbs. so far...30 to go. A few months back I started experiencing pain in my lower mid abdomen. The pain is pretty bad at times, to where I can't hardly stand up straight. It feels like gas pains, but it's not moving anywhere. I discussed this with my doctor and he told me I need to drink more Water and take in more Fiber. He told me to start using benefiber. So I did. After about 2 days of using the benefiber the pain was gone.(it was pretty much every day) Well the relief only lasted about a month or so. Now the pain is back. I didn't stop taking the fiber so I don't understand why it's back. Has anyone else experienced this? If so how can I make it stop? What is causing it? Please help!!!

Hi Jennifer

i had my banding done on the 5th Dec and was ok with the exception of a port infection, i had the port removed a week ago now and the day after the op i had lower abdomen pain and was told it was gas and would disperse.....IT DIDNT, the following day i started with severe pain in the bladder area, the nurse said to see my GP as they did not deal with bladder infections...test was fine, no bladder infection....i am at a loss and in total pain daily, i feel like someone is knifing me between my legs and have the lower abdominal pain to the right also! i had ultrasound and urine test showing nothing and had bloods done today so i am hoping this shows something so someone will listen! Surgeon said it was highly unlikely to do with band as its lower but it certainly can not be discounted due to gravity....so please listen to your body and follow up on it and i am SO glad i found someone else suffering the same sort of thing...

keep well

About 9 days ago, I started to get a squeezing-type pain in my lower abdomen. I had muscle aches and fever as well as headache. I thought I had the flu till I collapsed one evening. I had a slew of tests done, blood work, x-ray, ct scan etc.... They are still not sure what it is but I am worried that it may be erosion! The pain progressed up to the port area, and I spent a few nights in hosp on iv, antibiotics etc... I am home now, feeling much better but still with a bit of pain in the upper abd. I had a complete de-fill last eve. and hopefully what ever it is will clear up. i have had my band almost 1 yr to the day and am so scared that I will lose it.

I am being referred to a surgeon who has more experience with lap bands and hopefully she will get to the bottom of this without loss of my band.

Good luck to you all.

I had some pain like yall are describing that turned out to be a bladder infection. PCP said it could have been a result of too much Protein. I laid off the protein supplements and took my antibiotics as prescribed and have not had any more trouble

I just joined and saw your problem. I was banded in Sept 2005 about a year later i had excruciating pain in the left lower abdomen. I went to an internist, the gastroenterologist, had a colonoscopy, went to the gynocologist and my bariatric surgeon. She thought the port line was twisted. She did another laproscopic surgery. in fact the port cord was twisted. But 3 days later the pain began again until i had to be taken to the hospital. its my gastroenterologist who sent me there and i had emergency laproscopic surgery. The surgeon found nothing wrong in the abdomen or stomach.

The pain came back. It was my family internist who figured out the it was proably scar tissue that developed in my abdominal wall ( in a muscle) which cant be seen during surgery or on scans and was pressing on a nerve. All I know is he put me on medication to relieve the stress and calm the muscles down. It has been under control since then.

I hope you feel better.

I have had similar pains - tends to happen after I have eaten something. I get really bloated and feel like my lower stomach is filling up with gas. It causes such great pain that it hurts to stand up straight. I have been taking Zantac, and that tends to help a little, until it's meal time again. I don't know what to do. I am going to try this fiber thing you speak of.

The Fiber seems to be working! I am trying to take it (2 pills) once a day. I haven't seem to have this issue on those days that I remember to take the pills. I forgot 2 days and then the pain started. I was able to get to a drugstore to pick up some chewable fiber pills. It helps to curb the pain a little. I am not sure why the fiber is working..... anyone have any clues??

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
