5th Day Post Op, Its Been Rough!

Recommended Posts

Could your doctor have a better name? Dr. Looser? How appropriate! That gave me a good laugh.

Sounds like you are doing well. I am still a bit frustrated but I am hanging in there...finding humor wherever I can.:scared2: The shoulder pain is better. I am just hanging at home today sipping ice tea in the sun so I really shouldn't complain.

Yes... his name is perfect, I would have to say. But there you go again with reference to perfect warm weather & iced tea.

Shall I send you some SNOW, we have plenty!

Shoulder pain seems to have subsided for now, at least while I have been up and conversing on the PC. I am just taking it day by day.

I get very surprised by some people on here who only after a few days post-op that they regret doing this. It's like they expected to be instantly skinny or something. It's major surgery after all and your body needs time to heal. And of course there are going to issues & pain, that's why God created pain meds. I cannot believe the amount of people who are not using their pain meds.

Good Luck cause it sounds like you are following the process and will be better for it in the long run! Gotta go eat my slim fast! Yippeee!

Sorry, I'll stop with the weather references. I don't want to put you in any more pain! :scared2: I lived in Sweden for 6 years so I sympathize. Actually, my kids would love you to send some snow our way. Last year it snowed in Malibu (30 miles away) but that is the closest we have come to snow in years.

Yep, I am with you on the pain meds. There is no honor in suffering.

I had my surgery on the 14th also. I felt pretty good until yesterday and was feeling good restricition because of the swelling. Now that the swelling is subsiding, I feel like I could eat a horse! Someone mentioned that their sips have turned into gulps; that is what is happening to me. I know it is mind over matter, so I am doing my best to control myself and not eat something that is restricted right now. Good luck to you all!

I was banded on 1/15 and found that my brain has been programmed to eat. Brain said eat, but stomach said full. I don't know if they filled the band any. Sf ice pops are a great suggestion. Try to really notice if it is hunger or how we have programmed ourselves. I see a burger commercial and I want to eat it up, but when I think about really eating it I know I can't. I am actually worried I am not getting enough calories, I'm at about 500 a day. I must have gotten lucky and the band is perfect. I think eventually everyone gets to this point with the fills. I find flavored water being sipped all day keeps the hunger away too. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

We do have to be careful not to over do it. However, sitting in the sun sipping ice tea.... Have a couple of inches of snow that I will pack off to you in the morning. I do envy the sun and warmth though.

I am heading back to work tomorrow. I think I can drive a car now with my knee. I had yogurt today. Not sure I was allowed to have it, but they said ok on milk because of the protien shakes. I am trying everything. My bitchiness is increasing each day. Everyone looks at me like I have two heads half the time. My 7th day is tomorrow. Unfortunately I have to attend a Breakfast meeting in the morning. I know I will just have to have my shake and what ever liquid I can get down before hand. No one at my office knows I did this. They all think I was out because of my knee. I probably would have been anyway so it is not a lie. I'm nervous because I am able to drink liquids and protien shakes with no restrictions. I don't think my band is very tight. I still get shoulder pain, but that might be from drinking it too fast. Builds up gas. I don't regret having the surgery, just the pain. My meds were not working all that well - even with morphine I still had pain. I was really surprised. The Tylenol with Codine didn't do squat for me. Gave me nightmares.

I feel blessed having such a smooth recovery. I do feel weak and take a walk inside the house 4x a day. I hope you are not getting dehydrated. Don't push yourself physically. Get some help if you can. They put me on Previcid when I was discharged and I have had zero nausea and vomiting. I do still have very loose bowels about 4x a day. Don't hesitate to call your Doctor. I will say a prayer and I hope you feel better.

Hello everyone!!

I am at day 10. It's very hard to control those head hunger habits!! - One thing that really helped me is hot cocoa!! It really helped things go down in the morning & helped with the "chocolate cravings". Also, the other thing that helped was - V8 in a can. I have to make sure I eat every 2-3 hours. or the crazy hunger kicks in!!

ex: hot cocoa - 7 am

scrambled eggs - 8:30

depends on how the day goes,

I have a Protein shake or V8 at 11-11:30

lunch 12:30-1:30 today I had broccoli cheese Soup

4 pm - Protein Shake

i had malt-o-meal tonight for dinner..

or have some potato Soup

I know that this is no where near the healthiest - but, it's helping me from trying to sneak in a french fry, potato chip, or easy cookies!! The other thing is- this is still way less that I used to eat. I have even counted these calories (650-800)

I used to eat a good 2500-4000 calories a day!! :wink2:

Deedles, your already on soft foods? I want to be on soft foods sooooo bad since I had my Fluid taken out as well. My stomach in constantly growling too telling me Im hungry! I ate an entire cup of light yogurt before bed last night and I was fine! I feel like Im not getting what I feel I need. Im confused on how I should be treating myself. Truly, I dont feel like Im getting enough Water or food! Im calling my Dr. tomorrow to ask how he would like me to be eating since he took my Fluid out. And I see him Thursday too. By the way, how are you sleeping. At first I was sleeping up right a lil bit but now Im on my back but I still dont feel comfortable. I tried my side but thats not happening! Well, take care:smile:

When I say Soft Foods I mean sugar free pudding, Yogurt, and egg beaters. Last night I tried 1/2 cup instant mashed potatos and it was good to have a different taste of something normal. Yes you will have the hunger pains now that the swelling is going down and you had the fluid removed. I too am experiencing this. But don't you have a Diet Program to follow? I have everything spelled out in different stages of what I can and cannot have. Then every 2 weeks it adds more things. I can scan mine and send it to you if you want... leave me your email privately. it's a good diet program.

No one ever said this was not going to be hard work, and I am sure we all thought "great... something that will restrict my intake". But when you remove the fluid and the swelling goes, then there is not much restriction and you have to rely on will power and mindset.:Dancing_wub:

I have a follow up today and I am hoping my doctor will put a little back in. Most people can live through the first part and end up with the original fluid, but you and I were ones that could not for whatever reason.:wink2:

Do you have Protein Super Shots from GNC? They are good as they have 42 grams of Protein in only 3 ounces. I used them when I could not get the shakes down. But a few sips of one of these plus Water, should shake off hunger pains for a little while. They come in fruit Punch and Grape.:Dancing_wub:

I had my surgery yesterday and am doing better than I thought I would be. however, I am very hungry yet don't want to eat (messes with the head :w00t:) I am also VERY sore on my port side, which was to be expected. I also have a hard time getting up/sitting up and drinking Water. I have eaten very little and am struggling to drink water. I know it will get better, and although this time is hard. If I can go through 2 child births and lifelong ridicule for being fat, this should be easy

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
