Roller coasters and straws

Recommended Posts

I have a couple of curious questions. I am being banded on Dec 30 and have a trip planned to Disneyworld in June. Can you ride extreme roller coasters with the band, and has anyone tried it.

The second is about straws I know we are not supposed to use them because of getting air into the stomach. Has anyone drank from a straw and what happened? Thanks

I was banded at the beginning of December. I have not been on any roller coasters since being banded so I can't help you there. However I can tell you how a straw effects me. Before banding I ALWAYS drank with a straw. Now I RARELY use one! I used one the first few days after being banded, and it was not for me! I would take too big of drinks and then would feel pain and would have to burp. Once I burped I felt better. So to help me learn to take smaller drinks I used a sippy cup the first week after surgery. Playtex has one that looks like a travel coffee mug that I bought at Wal-Mart. When I go out to eat now, I don's use a straw. I tend to take too big of drinks with a straw, plus I was so accustom to using a straw that I would revert back to how I used to drink. So now taking out the straw and drinking straight out of the cup helps me remember to take small drinks.

Hope that helps you a little .

There are people on here who do mixed martial arts after being banded so I think a roller coaster will be safe.

I have not been on any rides. But I would think by June it would be fine.

As for straws, we were told in our "classes" never to use a straw again. Something about the "sucking" on one can cause band slippage and problems.

Hope this helps

My Dr lets us use straws now, but I am 5 months out. I always use one and so far no side effects.

Straws can just increase your gas because you swallow air with them. Immediately post op I didn't use them; now I do again, from time to time, with no noticeable ill effect. And ask your surgeon if in doubt but as long as you're healed (and in 6 months you should be) there wouldn't be any problem with any roller coaster, unless they nauseate you and make you vomit violently or some such.

Thanks for the replies I am still looking for someone who has ridden roller coasters after being banded. My job as a dad is the most important job I have.

In that case your safest bet is to ask your surgeon, if you are that unsure. He or she can tell you what is safe for you; here you will just get anectodatal evidence, or as I've done, best guess conjecture. And as I've learned from anecdotal testimony, just because some people "can" do something doesn't mean we ALL can do something. If you are afraid a roller coaster will impair your function as a dad, then check with "the authority", your surgeon! Good luck to you!

I love roller coasters and the Happiest Place on Earth is my second home. I am planning a trip in 2009, so I better be able to go on roller coaster rides.

I never used straws pre-band and I don't use them post band. My doctor tells us no straws, because of sucking in air.

I haven't done "extreme" roller coasters, but I did do some spinning rides that take you upside and in the air. Even the seat restraint was pushing right up against my port area. It was fine. I was more worried about my purse!!

I think you should be fine, but don't eat or drink anything for a few hours before you plan to do the rides. My doctor said not to eat or drink before flying, so I imagine it's sort of the same thing!

I am headed for Disneyworld next week. I was ok'ed to be let loose on the whole park! Just like pre-op and post-op diets, every doctor will very in their restrictions for their patients. You should just give him/her a heads up next time you see them, or give them a call, to say that you are planning a trip in June and you want to know.........and make a list of questions, because you might forget one! Good Luck, and have fun!

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
