Bipolar and headed to bandland

Recommended Posts

Caffeine was not off limits for me, only during my pre and post op diets. It does however increase your appetite. I will have caffeinated tea or a coffee drink. At first I was grouchier than normal, but I learned other things to do to help me with my depression. I took up cross stitching and crocheting...reading. Something to replace that old "friend" food . You need to have people you can talk to when you're depressed...someone you can turn to that will talk you through the tough times and help you overcome that kickstand in your life that always made you feel better when you were in a mood . You'll see what will work for you and what will not! Good luck to you. If you need to talk/vent I am always around

The food changes do affect mood swings.

Cutting back on calories in general was challenging, but by taking it slow and day by day helped. My depression does increase and when it intensifies, I nap on those days. Caffine is permittable, as far as tea is concerned and sometimes I do drink a dcoke.

Overall, this was a good descision for wloss.

my best

Yes, Im at 6.9ccin 10cc band and can drink dcoke all day, but dont b/c could cause band trouble(?). I cannot drink out of bottle, but cans and fountain drinks are fine. If its with food it has to be slow and easy. Really the more carbonation the better! I guess every bandster is a little different :)

Glad to hear everyone's thoughts. I am still in the beginning stages of deciding if this is for me or not. One thing I have been a little worried about is how this will effect my bipolar issues. Sounds like there will be some adjustments, but it's doable. Good luck to all of you how have decided to go with the band!

Hi,

I am bipolar too. I have not had my surgery yet, but am planning the sleeve or bypass. I am wondering how my medications will be affected. I am on Lamictol, Prozac, and Wellbutron. Can anyone help?

I am on Lamactil, Lexapro, and Depacote. I didn't have any problems with my meds. Some people may need the dosage changed and you always need to follow up on it to make sure that everything is working well. The surgery does change things...losing weight changes things. Good luck!

I'm afraid being honest in my psych eval yesterday hurt my chances of getting banded.

Is it possible that seperate psychological issues can get you denied for the band?

What did you tell them? I think they are looking to disquailfy someone who seems so emotionally unstable that they say they will kill themself if the lap band doesn't work.

I know I worried a lot about the pscyh profile when I was first trying to "in", but none of my fears have materialized. They know I am prone to depression and take meds for it. ( I don't recall if I used that loaded word "bipolar." People seem to get scared of that word.)

I have had the impression that it is just an "i" to dot for the insurance.

My psychiatrist had no problem recommending me for the band, though my psychologist seemed nervous about it. So get your letter from whoever is not making a super-big deal out of it.

I am bipolar and I am happy I can finally admit it. I was diagnosed 2 years ago and I have finally found a good doctor who figured out the right conbinations of drugs about 8 months ago. Before it was hell.

I went to a hospital here and they told me that they do not band bipolar people. I left like I was discriminated against. I felt like there was something wrong with me. It is a disease that we have to be sensitive about and people just toss us into the whole - you are mental - thing.

When I went to another hospital they did not care whether I am BP or not - I did have to go through psychological evaluation thought and I passed it.

The reason they gave me at the hospital where they rejected me over me being BP was that we go through a lot of phases and we could stop taking medications or follow the instructions. Screw them.

One thing that worries me is that while I am loosing weight I will recall things that happened in my life when I was that size.

I am 24, female. I have a great boyfriend who went through hell to be with me, no matter how many times I rejected him. He is very understanding and constantly researching books and internet for BP treatment and response from our loved one. How to deal with it and what not to do to cause a shift.

Now that I am stable I feel very good and out relationship stopped being a roller coaster.

Yesterday my doctor told me that in the start he wasnt sure if he could help me now, he said, he is very proud of me because I am working hard on being mentally healthy.

Lap Band was another thing to look forward to because being BP made me depressed about my weight and how people reacted towards me.

Thanks for reading my rumbling.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
