I Got My Surgery Date...Where Are The November Bandsters?

Recommended Posts

My friends keep suggesting knitting. I guess it can be a real passion and definitely keeps the hands busy!

I am not as far out as you, so it may very well change, but right now, I am finding anything more than two to three tablespoons every four or five hours and I am in MISERY. I am okay with that for now, but hope I won't always be this full-feeling!

I felt like this too - for about 7 days. Then I started feeling hunger, though even once I started feeling hunger, it didn't take much for me to get full. Now I'm 19 days out and I get hungry every 4 to 5 hours, but I'm definitely eating less at meal-time than I did before the band. But I know that this is normal, so I try not to get too upset about it. I won't get good restriction until I've had a few fills, so for now I'm happy where I'm at. But I still have to seriously control myself on the weekend!

My surgery is at 8:30 tomorrow morning...I'm not really as nervous as I could be. It kind of comes and goes. I'm more anxious about the prospect of surgery, than about the actual band. I've never even broken a bone! Wish me luck everybody. I'll be sure to let you all know how I'm doing on Tuesday when I'm back at home.

 ihope you are feeling good. i 2 weeks out and feel great!

Well, it's done, got the band today, surgery was 7:30 and I was home by 2:15. I would have to say that I'm doing much better than I thought I'd be doing. One suggestion for those who have gas, try to belch as much as you can, it's worked wonders for me. No gas pain today to speak of, I forced myself to belch as soon as I woke up in my room. Walking around the house and outside briefly today, helped to relieve the gas (belched) also had lots of Water - sipped per instructions, apple juice, two small sf popsicles and one cup sf Jello. Oh yeah, I made a great holiday treat Hot Wassail (applie juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice, cinnamon sticks and whole cloves poked into an orange and all heated). This is a great holiday treat. Also planning to have turkey broth on Thanksgiving - found it in a box in the local grocery store.

My sister was such a great help and my daughter did fine, though she was very scared when I left the house this morning. I ended up sending my cell phone with her so she could call my sister. I think this helped her a lot. The pain is very low, only hurts when I try to get up from bed or a sitting position. The heating pad is helping relax my tummy.

Happy Thanksgiving to all November banders' out there!

The gas people speak of is not in the stomach. Whatever you are belching out is air in your stomach from other things, but the gas pains that come (mine didn't come until day 3) is gas trapped in the abdominal cavity between organs from where they puffed it in there to help separate things for surgery. That takes a while to go away, as the body has to reabsorp it and then dispose of it. That takes time. It can't be passed via mouth or the other end...its not in the digestive tract.

I am glad you are feeling good! I am on day four and feel fantastic, but did start finally having the gas pain yesterday. I thought I had escaped it. I didnt' want you to be alarmed if you still get it. Hopefully you won't.

I can't believe this time last week I was in the OR. I feel fine from the banding....but I still have a lot of pressure from the hernia repair. I'm still sleeping in our recliner.

My left shoulder also throbbs at times. Dr Singh said that is not from gas but from the hernia repair. I will say my tummy is beginning the gurgle more when I'm hungry.

I strongly suggest purchasing the bullet.....it has been wonderful....hubby likes it to....

Is anyone having trouble getting all their Protein in every day? We were told 50 grams per day for females & 63 for males. I was using the Nectur vanilla for my pre-surgery diet but can't stand the smell of it right now. I'm having major problems with smells...especially sweet smells.

Hubby and I went out yesterday and purchased unflavored Protein Powder and the Nectur bullets....I hope they aren't sweet.

Knitting is my passion. My grandmother taught me when I was very young. I knitted thru my teens & twenties then stopped. In '05 I suddenly had the urge to pick it up again...everyone around me was knitting winter scarfs. I dug my needles out of my sewing room and have been addicted ever since....even got tennis elbow from knitting at home & working on computer at work. I guess I kinda got addicted.....didn't want to exercise, cook or socialize much....just wanted to knit in my down time from work. Our son was also playing travel ice hockey at the time & my projects would go with me. I'd sit in the car 'til game time. Good luck....it is a wonderful past time you can knit for causes. I've knitted prayer shawls for women with breast cancer & a woman who lost her brother to cancer. You can knit for our troops and preemies.

Good luck to all banders who will be banded this week. I will have my one week band-a-versary tomorrow. So far, so good. The only pain I have is from the hernia. I'm forcing myself to eat....just not that hungry. I'm still sleeping in the recliner because being flat on my back still hurts a lot.

It's difficult to believe but this time last week I was a bundle of nerves....now I'm home, posting on the computer, sitting in the recliner in front of the fireplace, loving life......

On another note......

I feel like a real dummy BUT how do I post my stats via ticker factory...please help!!! :)

After you get your ticker made out, copy and paste in where your put your signature.

Hi everyone. I was banded one week ago today. I went back to work today and things went well. I am eating about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of blended food three times a day with fluids in between. I too am having a hard time getting in all my Protein. I bought three large things of Unjury before surgery and loved it - can't stand it now. Like someone else said, the smell is killing me. I think it is the Soy.

I am finding that the site were the port is feels really funny. For those of you with children, do you remember when you had your baby in your belly and they would kick you and push their foot against your belly? That is what it feels like. I called the doctor's office today and they said that this is normal because it is attached to the muscle, therefore pushes and moves around for now since there is so much Fluid around that area. It should get better. It isn't really pain but a funky feeling. I take that back, there is pain in that area when I sneeze and/or cough.

The other thing I struggled with was Constipation. It took an entire week before I went. This was after taking stook softners for 4 days! I'm good in that department now, thank goodness!

:)

Hey Pat! Glad to see you're recovering well. Your holiday drink sounds great, I may have to try it. My surgery was yesterday at 8:30am, and I got home around 4pm. I've been sipping broth and having sugar free jello. It's funny, I feel super hungry but when I do "eat", I can't get much down. I didn't have any gas pain yesterday but I feel a bit of discomfort from the gas today. :) I hope it doesn't last too long...

Thanks for the wisdom, guess I was mistaken, now I'm not looking forward to day 3 so much. I'll continue to get out and walk. Today, I started to have congestion in my lungs, so am working to breathe deeper. I'm so glad I have the week off work.

Hi all!

Well, tomorrow is my day! I'm off to bed and up to head to surgery. I cant wait!

To those of you that may be wondering if this is really what you want to do, let me tell you about the last 2 days for me. It may help.

Yesterday morning I was told that some bloodwork results had not yet been received. The blood test was to either confirm or refute a blood disorder that i have been told that i have since i was about 4 years old. Well, at 1:00pm yesterday they called the surgery off. Talk about a let down! Thats when i realized just how badly I wanted this surgery. No more doubts on my part at all!!! Not that I had many at all, but this is surgery, and it's not a decision to be taken lightly.

Well, I left a message for my Dr. to call and let me know what the options were. It was the Oncologists office that called me, not the surgeons office. So, I finally got a call at about 6:00pm saying that they called the lab directly and got the results. I'm fine and the surgery is back on! What a relief! This bump in the road proved to me just how important this decision is. I can't wait to get started!

So, to anyone just browsing, or trying to decide if they want the surgery, or tryng to decide if they made the right decision, i say this: imagine being told that you cant have it. How would you feel?

Take care, all! and starting tomorrow I will be on a new journey to a new me!

I was banded this past Monday, YAY!

I tell you that night I was wondering if I had done the right thing. Not so much because of the pain, but from grieving the food. I wasn't in a ton of pain. They kept me on painkillers throughout the evening. I was just sleeping a lot. (My doctor keeps bandsters in the hospital over night.)

I wasn't craving food before, but now that I have my band, I'm looking on food more fondly. I had a dream that I fixed myself a big sandwich, potato chips and a big bowl of ice cream. Then I realized, OMG!, I can't eat this! I have this little fear that I will forget that I can't eat certain things. LOL!

My brother (father figure) suggested that I think of one particular thing to think of each time that I am tempted to break da rules. At least that one thing, then others if need be. I keep thinking of this adorable picture that I took of my daughter on her first day of kindergarten. She had a full entourage. Mom, Dad, Grandma, from her Dad's side, and Uncle Brian (the videographer). It makes me so sad that both of my parents have missed out on her growing up. They died way too young from not taking care of themselves. I could have really used my Mom there a few times. In fact, I still need her advice and comfort. Whenever Katie has a "great" moment in her life, I wish my folks were with us to Celebrate. I believe they are there, but Katie and I can't see them and really share it with them. I don't want my daughter to have to go without her Mom for a second more than she has to. Even though I'm a PIA for this twelve year old girl!!! hehehe.

I've had plenty of time with food in my life. Much more than my fair share. It comforted me and I thought it was my friend for a long time. Now it has turned into a monster in my life. I believe farther down the road I can still take bites of this or that, it's just not the same. Time to face the feelings!!!! I can't keep running away from them for the next 45 years!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
