Uncomfortable feeling in chest

Recommended Posts

I had to post again now that i'm 7 weeks post surgery and say that Meschultz is right. I thought I was dying the pain was so bad but one morning after a little while of being up I realized that I wasn't hurting at all. I was getting pretty depressed over it and regretting the surgery but I am so glad now that I did. Hang in there! It does get better! Especially when your pile of "too big clothes" starts growing! lol

I was banded 11/12/08 and am having the same thing...it feels like a side ache and is difficult to take a deep breath. I am trusting this will subside with time. It is good hearing those that are ahead cheering us on!

Wow, I thought there was something wrong with me. Feels like I have something stuck all the time and feels worse depending how I am laying. I was banded 11/19 and was starting to regret getting banded. Nice to know what I am going thru seems to be the norm. Also my cuts hurt really bad today compared to yesterday. I will try the hot tea tonight. I was not able to sleep last night. Maybe 1/2 hour here and there. Would be nice to get the pain gone so I can at least rest. That liquid pain killer does nothing for me. Nice to know I am not alone. :)

Hi guys,

I had surgery on the 18th. I too am experencing the same tightness and fullness in my chest. Everytime I take a deep breath in my left shoulder hurts. I just keep walking and taking as many deep breaths as I can. I am taking oxycodone for pain and it does help with that sensation. I am down to one pill a day now and hopefully I can be off of that by Monday. I just started pureed foods today and I am amazed at how 3 tbs fills me up. Still wondering how I am going to get 60g of Protein in my diet a day with eating so little. If anyone has an idea of how to do that please let me know!

The further you are out from surgery the more you will be able to eat. :tongue2:I remember only being able to eat 3 bites of

jell-o in a sitting. As far as Protein goes, I do the protein shots/bullets. You can get 42g in 3.1 oz or 26g in 2.8oz. Then I'm able to get the remainder protein in my diet. The 42g sides on a thicker consistency so I usually have to dilute it. Even tho they don't taste the best, :smile2: its a great way to get a lot of your daily protein. The Protein Shots can be found at GNC ,Vitamin World, etc. Some Walmarts even carry the 26g in fruit punch. Hope this helps!

Hey KPC1030 I too had surgery on 11/18 and feeling the same lump/tightness in the chest. I think it's so cool that we have a place like this forum where we can share our feelings and struggles and there are people just like you and me who have one had surgery on the same day so we are like comparing apples to apples not oranges and also folks that are passed the point we are and we can learn from them what we should expect in the future. Good luck to you and feel free to email me kharvick29fan@comcast.net. I would love to me your online band buddy since we started this new journey on the same day. I too am really struggling with even getting one Protein Drink down let alone 2 or 3 in a single day. I can only drink about 5 sips of the drink and I'm full. Water is much easier to drink without getting that knot feeling in my throat/chest.

I was banded Nov. 14th and I had all of the post op gas and swelling reactions people have described and on day 7 post op I went back to work, I'm a teacher, I was on my feet basically all day. THAT DAY, I had NO MORE gas or swelling pain. I think that the advise everybody inclusing our doctors give us regarding walking is KEY. I thought I was walking a great deal post surgery, but I guess not enough. Maybe try pushing yourself on the walking as far as you comfortably can. I know that really helped me. I would sit down and relax a few minutes when I felt tired, but I would get back on my feet when I felt better. I haven't had a problem with those pains since that first day back at work. I hope this helps!

I was banded on 11/07. I had all the gas in the beginning but that had since subsided. I've been on mush for about a week. Since yesterday afternoon I've had a tight, gas-bubbly feeling in my chest. It seems like if I could belch really good, I'd feel SO much better! Could this be from eating something wrong? I ate a piece of my daughter's roll yesterday without thinking! I've been hurting ever since. I don't feel like I need to vomit or anything. I just feel really tight and uncomfortable in my chest. By the way, I'm new around here. I'm so glad to have people to talk to about this experience!

I'm glad the gas pains have subsided for you. Ooh, the bread probably sent you over the edge. I remember having the exact same feeling. The need to belch would make one feel so much better. Try bending over~that sometimes will produce a slight belch for temp.relief.:cursing: I am 8 wks. post-op now and I notice if I eat the wrong things I'm going to pay for it later. Tonight I had a sandwich w/only 1/2 the roll and I haven't felt well since. I've had the exact same thing previoulsy w/o any problems. Essentially, learning to eat all over again is the hard part. What you are experiencing with the tightness is normal to me b/c that's exactly how I felt and can still feel if the wrong thing gets digested. And some days you will feel tighter than others. We will all get through this together. Congrats on being in official bandland!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
