Hi. I live in Mississippi and plan to attend Dr. Woodman's seminar soon. My obgyn said he and Dr. Weaver are great, but I'm not sure if my insurance will pay, so if anyone knows what they charge, it would be appreciated. I am a teacher and I completed National Board Certification as a back up if I have to self pay. I won't find out if I passed until Nov., so I'm praying the insurance will pay.

Any information is appreciated. I live in Southaven.

Hello, sallen 21! I am scheduled for Aug 17--and of course, am a little apprehensive and nervous--have been much more so, but am kind of getting excited/ready now. Dr. Woodman is supposed to be great. He did gastric bypass on my brother in December and he was very pleased. I went to the seminar in May, I think. Dr. W. is very straightforward/to the point. I think some people may be apprehensive of him because of this--but I think he might have to be that way to people like us--he wants us to listen! Let me hear from you. Seminar is VERY informative. Good luck and let me hear from you!

Welcome to our Mississippi board Sallen21 and Rogers11! This is a very informative site. Please let me know if you have any questions - I'll do my best to help out, even though I am only 3 months out myself! Sallen21, I hate to disappoint you, but if you are a Mississippi teacher, our insurance has an exclusion policy that specifically prohibits weight loss surgery. (It is near the back of the insurance booklet.) I ended up doing self-pay and my Dr. in Oxford has a cost of $14,500 that includes everything (doctor, hospital, anesthesia, etc.) I hope everything goes well for you both. Keep me posted on your progress!

Hey there...I have not been here for sometime now. I had my last fill on August 1st. That was my 3rd fill. I think it was a good thing. It's a crazy thing. I have days when I am full quickly--then there are days now when food doesn't matter. I was shocked to know that this would occur and I would not be hungry. I then do the broth and mixed veggies that are forced down.

I was at 275 when i started and I was 238 on August 1st. If my calculations are right--I should be at about 229 pounds. I figured out my weight loss is about "2.33" pounds per week now. So that would give me around 8.33 pounds lost. I know I was getting compliments which gave me the big head for a time--hahahahaha.

Now the strangest thing is going on.I have gotten compliments from many of the older Women--ages 55 to 65--mmmmm....It's ok==I'll take it as it comes...If I am about 229--I still have about 66 pounds to lose. With 19 weeks left to the year of 2007. I could easliy lose the weight. I am not in a rush--If push my weight loss to 2.9 to 3.3---I could get rid of 55 to 63 pounds. I had quit the biking outdoors--due to this intense heat. But I started again this week. It's hot and sweaty--it make me weak--so my Water intake has increased and protien. I realize--I need to push my protien levels much more than I have been. It'll happen--if not--I will make it by March 2008...

Hi Everyone,

I live in Brandon, MS. I was banded on 6-19-07 at River Oaks Hosp. by Dr. David Carroll. I have had an awesome experience so far. No complications....weight loss to date is 41 lbs. I have a large VG band and so far I've had 1 fill (3 cc's). I don't feel any restriction so far, but I try to convince myself I do! LOL Just seems to make it easier! ha! I am so thrilled to have my band and I look forward to the years ahead with some "help". This is what I've been praying for-for years!!! I love this board...it's been so helpful and now I look forward to talking and sharing with some "Mississippi neighbors"! Good luck to all! Hope to hear from you!

I'm from Indianola. Had surgery week ago today and am doing great--no problems so far, but I am following my instructions to the t--not that that has been hard as I am not even hungry. Isn't it funny how the band takes the cravings away?

I went to Dr. Woodman's seminar. They said my insurance would cover the surgery if I went through a 6 month diet under Dr. supervision. I went to a diet Dr. and started. I called my insurance co. just to be sure and they said there was an exclusion policy in my plan. I have BCBS of Illinios as I don't use the MS teacher insurance because it doesn't pay for ANYTHING, not even sickness.

I cannot afford to self pay. I am so discouraged. My only hope is that I passed my National Board test which I will find out about in Nov. If I did, I am going to use that money to pay for it.

:cry

Hi Heather!!

I remember you too!! LOL You were the first person I heard when I woke up. I remember you telling me your story and I was so excited to FINALLY meet someone who had the Lapband! You were my first! lol I only remember parts of going back to my room, but I told my husband later all about this "beautiful nurse" in the recovery room that was telling me about just having the same thing and he said...I know, she brought you back in the room and got you all set up an told me about Dr. Carroll doing her lapband. He said you were very sweet and agreed with me that you were very pretty! ha! I just want to thank you for taking such good care of me! I had a great experience at River Oaks and I would recommend it to anyone. I absolutely love Dr. Carroll. He cares so much about his patients. I certainly made the right choice. I am very excited about the new support group starting Sept. 4th. at River Oaks. I'm already signed up. I hope I'll get to meet many "bandsters" and I hope I'll get to thank you again in person! Thank you for remembering me and much luck to you. Hope to see you soon!

Howdy, thumbs_up.gif

Don Here (skinnydippn42) This is my 1st. time here, just found this forum yesterday 8-26-07.

I seen the ad on TV and did a search for lap-band, found the Lap-band.com site. Found this site from a friend of my wifes.

I went to a seminar on 8-23-07 at the CMMC hospital in Jackson, MS. I live in Puckett, MS. about 30 miles away. Very imformative meeting.

I turn 65 yrs. old on Sept 1st. I'm waiting for an O.K. from Midicare. With Midicare and my other Health Ins., it should pay for 95% or more of the Banding. I'm looking forward to when I can have it done. I have read a lot about it & am very incourged this is the right thing to do. I have been fighting being over weight for 20 plus years. Weigh 260 lbs right now with a BMI of 43 and need to get down to about 145-150 lbs. I'm about 5' 5".

PS to MS link: Nice, a page just for us. LOL

This is all new to me. I need to be approved by MEDICARE & Federal BC/BS. CMMC is waiting to be approved by MEDICARE, is River Oaks approved be Medicare? if so it would be much closer for me. I live in Puckett.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
