Fills and flying

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a problem with a fill and then days later going on a trip on a plane? I am going to a wedding in California in October. I will have had 3 fills by the time that I go. The third one being just 2 days before I leave. Do you think that the pressure will do anything, like make it tighter?. Just wondering. The voices in my head are freaking me out, so I thought I would ask those of you who might have more experience with this.(I get my first fill Sept.3):)

From what I've read (no fills yet) I'd put it off! Not because of the flying, at all, but because 2 days isn't really enough to adapt. What if this one gives you too much restriction? What if you have issues and need an unfill? Even if your 1st 2 have been easy breezy this one may take some education before you can eat well with it. I'd postpone until I got back, or postpone the trip. Bottom line, though, I'd ask my doc.

I fly every week and although I do notice the band is a little tighter, I've had no problems. I wouldn't eat while on the plane just to be safe, hot tea seems to relax things.

I agree....2 days IMO is not enough time to get used to a 3rd fill. I had no problems with my first 2 fills and for my third it's been a nightmare. I had to get an unfill and can't imagine what I would have done if I was out of town. I am still dealing with a lot of puking, terrible heartburn and can't eat anything more then Soup and only about a 1/2 cup at a time. Sometimes I'll drink some Water and immediately comes back up. Basically I am miserable and the last thing you want to do is risk what happened to me, to happen to you. Your vacation will not be pleasent to say the least. My 3rd fill put me at 6 cc in a 10cc band. They had to unfill me .75 that same day and I still need an unfill BAD! Everyone is different though. My Dr. told me that some people have 8-9 cc and don't experience heartburn, throwing up, etc.....

LundyLane, my doc says the same thing. No air travel or out of town trips for at least a week after a fill. It's just a precaution, but I think a good one. I would wait......

I also get tighter when I fly. I can actually feel my band tighten during a high altitude flight. It takes a good 12 hours after landing to be able to eat. A little puddle jumper, or comuter flight doesn't seem to do that much, but the long 30,000 feet or more flights make it difficult. A recent fill would just make it that much harder.

Assuming your fill is not too tight, you will be fine. Just make sure you can get in to see the fill doctor the day after your fill. You should know by then whether it is too tight or not. I fly to my original surgeon to get my fill. I have to take 2 flights totaling about 4 hours to get home. Sometimes I fly 3 or 4 hours after I get my fill. Sometimes I sightsee and I fly home a day or two later. Either way, the flying is fine. You just get a little tighter so you have to be more careful for a few days.

Thanks everybody, I'll definatly ask my doctor prior to my 3rd fill about it. I live in Missouri and I'm flying to California. It's a 5 hour flight. I'll be there the rest of Friday and then come home on Monday.;)

I had my 3rd fill and then had to fly to Dallas 3 days later. A 4 hour flight. My nurse said I may experience it being a bit tight due to the flight and I was but nothing more than a regular fill. it wasn't so bad. It is hard to understand the restriction the first few days... I would say just don't plan to eat on the flight unless it is something light. Maybe a Protein Drink.< /p>

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
