running/exercise shoes for heavy supinator (underpronator)?

Recommended Posts

I don't know why it's taken me so long to realize I could ask YOU all about my shoe options... anywho...

I am 5'8", 350 and a SUPINATOR (rolls to the outside of feet midstride), and I am having a hard time finding a good running shoe. I usually stick with Brooks, and have been really happy with them. But I thought I'd pose the question and see what you all are wearing.

Most folks are Pronators (rolls to the inside of feet midstride), and heavy pronators are usually easier to fit than supinators, because while it is recommended that supinators wear cushioned shoes, cushioned aren't best for super-overweight folks (from what runner's world says).

Any suggestions are welcome!

I don't have specific suggestions about a shoe, but if you'll go to a store that specializes in running they can fit you.

Here in Dallas we have "Run On". All of the store personnel are trained in how to properly fit a shoe. They'll have you try on several pair and have you walk or run in them while they watch your feet.

They've never failed to find a great shoe for me.

Good luck!

Lisa

What Lisa said. Go the biggest metro area you live near and find a running store. The will fit you, watch you walk, have you take a quick jog, will take your shoes back if they don't work and spend about an hour with you.

Expect to pay ~$100. But a very good investment, indeed.

Hi, I used to work for a pedorthist and I am also a heavy supinator. When I worked there he started selling shoes and everytime he got in a new brand I would try their sneakers well he finally got in this brand called Aetrex and they are the best sneakers I have ever wore. The are very sturdy and I do everything in them. They cost me like $120 but they are all I will buy now. I also have him put a lateral wedge on the outside it helps with the supination. I can always feel my knees when I'm not wearing those shoes but never have a problem when I am. If you go to Aetrex Worldwide, Inc - Bringing Footwear and Footcare Products that enable you to Live Your Way click on home than click on footwear products then find a dealer you can enter your zip code and find stores in your area that sell them. I can't garantee that they will work for you but I'm also in the 300's and they are the best I've every tried. Any questions just ask me. Hope this helps!

these are great ideas... thanks all! I will definitely do that. I'm a little embarassed to into a running shop being my size, but better to find the right shoe and deal with the amused looks, right?

I'd visit a podiatrist - you may need orthotics also. And the podiatrist should be able to recommend the best shoes.

We have a store here called Athletes Foot, where supposedly they all can fit you with the right shoe. But they're young kids (which is what you usually find in retail) and they've obviously just rote learned the spiel about each shoe, and when they put you on their fancy machine, they're trained in what shoe to recommend, they're not really looking at YOU or YOUR results, iykwim. I dont trust those sorts of foot analysys. I'd go to a podiatrist or a proper running store, not just general athletic footwear. We have one called Active Feet in Melb, they're awsome, they'll spend an hour with you on the treadmill filming your gait etc.

I am also a supinator and wear Brooks shoes. I absolutely love them.

As others have said, check out your local running store.

thanks babygrl... I grew up in Dearborn (where I see you had your surgery), and I bought my last pair of Brooks from a place downriver in Southgate.

Jachut- Thanks for the tip... I did find a specialty store near my house, so I thought I'd try that first. I'm not REALLY running much yet, but I will keep the podiatrist in mind for when I get a little more "competitive" (if ever). I mostly just using them for the treadmill right now.

These were great ideas, thank you all! Now I just need to set aside the paycheck money for the new kicks!

If you have problem, in choosing your shoes you can create it ! It says! Create your perfect fit. visit this sites webstershoes.com You will now be in the Bespoke section where you can select your shoe size and shoe width - you even have the option to select different sizes for each foot. You can then select whether you would like to increase toe joint areas by either 3mm, 6mm or 9mm. For example, you can choose to add 3mm extra width to the big toe joint of your left foot and 9mm extra width to the little toe joint on the right foot – the choice is yours!

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
