I have my consult tomorrow....any advice??

Recommended Posts

I wish I had advice but I don't go for my 1st appointment until Friday but wanted to say Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

Carly~ I'm in SA too and I'm trying to gain weight before Friday too, LOL. I thought I was the only one. I really need my insurance to cover this but I'm a couple pounds away from being 40 BMI, which I have to be for BCBS FEP.

StLouisGal,

My consult went great. They don't think they'll have a problem getting me approved because of my other health problems. I have my psych appt tomorrow, my dietician appt Wed & my pre-op class Wed. So they're proceeding like I have been approved! But they won't actually run it by Tricare until after I meet with the dietciain on Wednesday. I don't want to get my hopes up though, just in case.

Glad to hear that yours went well. keep me posted!!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your approval. Waiting is impossibly hard but once the approval comes things move fast.

Glad everything is going well for you all. I am nervous but excited. I know I can do it...with help from my family, they are very very supportive. I think hubby more than anyone else. So waiting till Feb 11th seems like a long way ahead...but it will go by fast. My regular shrink appt. is on the 5th and I'll talk to her about this I can hopefully have her do the evaluation. Shes really very nice like her a lot.

Well, I suppose then that I should be thankful for the high cholesterol, the apnea and the fact that I am a smidge over 150 pounds over weight... Never thought I'd see the day. I have my first appointment with my primary care next Wednesday. I already have one doc saying I need this surgery. I have been battling obesity for 6 years now with no success... Just losing the same 25 pounds over and over again. I hope I get quick approval so that I can have this done SOON! I know it is a big commitment, but of course, I won't know how big a commitment until I talk more with the docs. I'm going to a class at the hospital where it's performed once I get the chance to go (got to find out when the next class is).

Yes, I think I will be going crazy while I wait this out. As everyone else on here has experienced. I just keep having these visions of myself actually in a bathing suit on the beach this summer! I wonder if that's unrealistic!! God I hope not!

Hey everyone-

I had my consultation on Friday. It went pretty well, I think. I'm scheduled to go in on 2/27 for an EGD. Apparently the doctor will stick a camera down my throat to see if my stomach has any signs of cancer (I think because my family has cancer history, although I have had none). I am supposed to go to a support group meeting to hear from other patients. And then follow up with him will be 3/12. He's a very busy doctor, waiting room was packed. Found out that my best friends sister in law used him for her gastric bypass too and loved him. Go figure!

I am working with tricare too. Man they really are slow sometimes. I have been trying to get referred out, but since the hospital does the gastric surgeries I can't. I would really prefer to go to a clinic that that is all ALL they do instead of the multi purpose docs at the hospital.

So far I have just had my seminar, one class. Still need 4 more and only ONLY then can I get my psych eval. *rolls eyes* Tri care really does hate its patients I think ....

Jaime,

Have fun with the EGD, ugh! My psych eval went well on Friday, I felt like I had been put thru the ringer, but I passed. I go tomorrow to see the dietician and pre-op class and then they submit my paperwork to the insurance for approval. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

At least you know someone else who has used your doctor so you can pick their brain. That should make you feel more comfortable. Keep me posted as to your progress!

Has anyone had a chemical stress test. They say I can't use the treadmill because I'm too large(???) so they will inject something to make my heart go faster? Anyone able to explain this to me?

Hey StLouisGal-My mom had to have the same thing done because she's overweight and a smoker. Basically they inject you with whatever the medecine is (no idea, sorry), and she said it feels like you're running on a treadmill without actually doing anything. Have to make sure her heart was strong enough to withstand her back surgery. So I imagine it's similar. Probably not fun, but wouldn't be too worried!!

PS-So at the doctor's office, the nurse marked my height as 5'9", which is funny since my whole life I've been 5' 11 3/4", but I think they might do this on purpose as it made my BMI 46 instead of 41. Go figure. But I know I haven't shrunk almost 3 inches!!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
