thanks Phily--I see now that it would have been a good idea for me to give more of the background first. I have to admit to you that haven't gone to gym in the last few days -- although I have been walking outside, doing my lifecyle at home and they also put me through mild strengths training with those rubber bands at the physical therapist office. I have to admit that I have been avoiding her becasue I feel bad when she gets in my face like that. I have to do a lot of writing and thinking in my job and I'm under stress right now because my tenure status is being decided by the administration. I HAVE to have enough strength to work during the day or I'll be in trouble. I paid the gym a head through Sept and I really do think I should get in there and use those professional machines. I really do want to get stronger than I am but I just can't allow her to push me as hard as she thinks I should go.

Penny - Nope I did the treadmill only for the first 8 months - I went 4-5 times a week (sometimes 3-4 depending on life) started out slow - like a 20 minute mile and just worked myself up - didn't push too hard but I did challenge myself - so that it didn't become a chore and I would quit - I just upped my speed and distant every couple of weeks - I am up to 3 - 3 1/2 miles 2 x week on inclines from 0-10 and I can do it not holding on speed 2.8 for the 10 and 4.0 for flat.

But weights are good - my body has really changed in the last 4 months - but work at your speed - that's what i did..

Thanks Long! Say a prayer for me......I want it to be complication free!

Hey Carol - Welcome - Warning Tough Band Love Advice (operative word being love)

1st they banded your tummy not your head - your band doesn't make your food choices nor does it exercise for you - it is only a tool to help you with your Portion Control. But as with anything else you can abuse this tool by eating slider foods (foods that slide right through the band) eating high fat & sugar items too.

This is not a diet- diets don't work to coin a phrase - it's really not about being skinny either - It's about being healthy (the skinny part is just icing on the cake) - to be healthy you need to eat good healthy foods - follow the band rules - Hard Protein first - then veggies - then starchs/carbs if any room - no drinking with meal - or after for at least 1/2 hr or what ever your doc says. 3 meals - 2 healthy snack (low fat - sugar free) - physical activities (walking - swimming - weight - dance whatever floats your boat and gets you moving)

I had major frickin surgery - I was 52 when banded - I have fewer yrs ahead of me than what's behind me and I want to extend the years I have left and I wanted to improve the quality of my life. So my head is totally in the game. IMHO 75% of the work is up to you and the band will do the other 25%..

I was told over and over again here on LBT by my 50+ ladies that the band was only a tool - So I knew going in that this had to be a LIFETIME LIFESTYLE change in my life. Also, I have the experience of all my other dieting efforts - and I am able to use the information I learned in Weight Watcher in helping me eat healthy (not diet) and exercise.

I eat healthy 98% of the time - I allow for treats 2% of the time - but those calorie are not in addition to my daily budget of 900-1200 but included in. I exercise 3-4 days a week (2 cardio - 2 weights) - I also keep a food diary (on my 6th book) where I track my calories & pt grms.

Attached is a sample menu of mine - it may help

I bought a scale that gives me all the info on whatever I am weighing - I used it alot in the being but now I know what a portion size looks and know most of the calories by heart of the foods i eat (I still pull it out when I am eating something different)

I eat off of a sandwich plate - use children's utensils - and have a little bowl that holds one cup.

I still eat out - Mexican or Chinese - but I eat 1/4 what I ate before - I eat minimum 1 cup per meal - usually 1 to 1/2 - but some nights it can be 2 cups.. I eat low fat - mostly sugar free - and I do eat carbs/starches I always have some form of starch with my dinner - usually 1/2 cup of rice.

I am more than willing to share - as I know how it feels to be the Fat Chick - and in my head I still have her - but before long she will be replaced by the new thinner & healthier chick and I want everyone here to share the joy in meeting and exceeding your goals and to feel so much better.

Ok you got the Janet's intro into banding 101 - Again I don't mean to offend or hurt feelings - but I truly do believe that as obese pple we make so many excuses - NO MORE EXCUSES - if you think you can't then you won't - If you think you can you will.

Just get your mind in the game - we are here for your support and most of the time when we think we are hungry we really aren't we want to soothe our nerves or whatever - I still fight this 1 yr out - I will be full from dinner but still want to eat mentally.. This is work - life is work - but you are so fricking worth the work.

We are all here for you..

Off my soap box (for now anyway:lol:)

I am a new bandster, but usually when dieting need a kick in the butt. So your words of wisdom to those who needed it were well taken. I am still on liquids, but am doing exactly as doctor ordered so I can heal and be ready for the good stuff the is to come. If I ever need my butt kicked, I will find you Indio! Your the girl to do the job! :huh2:

Janet--that sounds like what I was doing too. I was up to about 50 mins on the tredmill and then I'd speed it up and slow it down and move the incline around. Then every once in a while I'd try to do some twisting--arm raising-- bending. I guess I thought this was a type of interval training. The treadmill heart monitor said I was right in my target range and it would go up and down along with my exertion level. I was really working up a sweat. Needed a towel to wipe my face. She just comes up to me and says – “you been working those machines?” I shake my head no. She makes a face and shakes her finger at me and says, “you can’t rely on that treadmill. It won’t work. You’re just losing muscle and Water. Your kidding yourself. You can do that for a year and your not going to lose fat.” That when I went to have my body composition measured. I just decided that if I had the exact composition reading – that I could see if she was right. Well–it looks like she WRONG!

I just Googled this to refresh my memory, because I remembered - kind of - something about longer term cardio burning fat. Here is what I found:

Cardio Exercises to Burn Major Calories!

jumprope.jpgThe best cardio exercise is simply the one you will do day in and day out consistently. Choose one which you enjoy doing and don't be afraid to mix the exercises up. Interval cardio work consists of moving from one exercise to another in set time intervals. For example, you could do the elliptical trainer for 15 minutes, then switch to the stationary bike for another 15 minutes and finish off on the treadmill for the last 15 minutes. Interval training is a great way to keep everything fresh!

There are two schools of though when it comes to cardio training. The "slow & steady" group and the "high intensity" group. These two groups breakdown like this:

Slow & Steady Cardio

  • Long duration (45min - 1 hour)
  • Low intensity
  • Burn fat and not carbs
  • Preserve joints

High Intensity Cardio

  • Short duration (20min - 30min)
  • High intensity (interval training)
  • Burn tons of calories & rev up your metabolism throughout the day
  • Treat cardio like weights - explosive movements (sprinting, etc)

Our advice is to try both for at least 6 weeks and make sure to monitor your progress with a journal and take weekly photos of yourself to see if you're truly losing body fat.

I will be banded for 2 months in 4 days and I have lost 41 lbs....44 to go!

Congrats on the STUCK.... hee,hee... I know to others that would sound odd. But we bandsters know that its a SIGN FROM GOD!!! that our band is doing its job and Stopping us.

Booklady - Thanks - I'm here for you !!! And am so glad that you are following your doc's rules - there are so many new banders who aren't and it is so frustrating - (well mostly the younger ones - but some even in their 40's eating real food 4 days out... I love the 50+ thread cuz we have a lot more life experiences to draw from and we know at this stage in our life that tomorrow isn't promised and we want to be around for a few more year... Hugs Janet

Yep she is full of Crappola... You can tell her that I lost 75 lbs on the treadmill alone and the last 25 came off with both- It can be done - but it is better to do both if you can - I really do beleive that - and it goes to the science of muscle and burning calories which I am not = it was explained but I can't translate  - but I like that on the treadmill I see how many calories tht I burn in my hour when I am doing weights you don't see that.. Plus it takes muscle to walk ...

Thanks, Janet, I believe in the power of prayer......and you can't get too much of it! I am excited about my new journey to health. I will talk to y'all in a couple of days.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
