This is a big step so it’s only natural to be nervous. I was the same but just knew there was no point doing the same things over and over to get the same result. Time for change. I wish you all the luck in the world, have faith you can do this. Focus on how physically healthy you will feel afterwards.

My date is also Jan 30th...so we are surgery twins...lol....I do believe everything will go great and will be very healthy and happy afterwards...God bless both of us and everyone else who is on this journey...

Hi Lark, I'm sorry you're feeling lousy. I'm 9 days post op, gastric bypass with Hiatal Hernia repair. It was rough the first couple days, it hurt and I couldn't stay awake for more than a few minutes at a time. And I couldn't pee. It was a rough go for the first couple days, but I got better by halves it seems starting 4 or 5 days out. I went home on Friday, took one pain pill friday evening and then didn't need anymore, yesterday and today I haven't needed any tylenol either. It will get better, sending you healing thoughts and hugs.

I just had DS stage 1 aka the SADI-S surgery on Jan 10. First couple of days were rough as well. For me, I had uncontrolled hiccups and reflux just sipping Water. I’m on day 3 post op and getting a little better. I still can’t sip very much but the hiccups have subsided a bit. I also couldn’t lye down in my bed due to the pain so I’ve been resting, sitting, and trying to sleep upright in my recliner chair.

My revision surgery (sleeve to SADI) went well on Thursday. My pain is almost non-existent, and my energy levels are good. Pacing myself getting liquids and Protein in but doing fairly well with that as well. I was discharged the day after surgery and I'm home now.

Hi all, I had the sleeve done on the 10th. I still don’t feel like myself and I’m glad that I found this resource. I’m not sure why more people don’t talk about the discomfort post op. I’m also having a hard time drinking, i’m not feeling hungry either. I have small feeling of regret but I am trying to remind myself of the long run. Can anyone relate?

I’m in the same boat re regret and i kept thinking “should I have done this” but then i think about all the reasons why i needed to do this and then I felt better.

i had my op on the 11th so im a day behind you.. tbh I never even thought about post op recovery.. it was just more getting all the meals prepared that I can eat and that’s it - no thought of any pain or discomfort I will have.

everyone on here is lovely and will give great advise for us newbies :)

This is such an important thing to address. I got my date… 5 months earlier due to a cancellation. I wasn’t expecting the scheduler to call me until February, for a date in “April/May”. I’m not prepared and have been scrambling trying to get Isopure, cups, Protein Water and shakes, Soup, etc. I havent had a moment to even think about pain management. It’s not something I can predict-seems like everyone is different.

Any recent post-op peeps in here have some wisdom to share regarding post op pain management-outside of the meds prescribed?

Had surgery on the 3rd, I went home after two days, I took one pain pill that evening and not again. I stopped taking Tylenol a few days ago and I’m feeling decent without it. It was rough for a few days especially because of the hernia repair, that’s still uncomfortable to wear a bra.

Surgery scheduled for 1/23. I am on day 5 and I am struggling with the two week diet. 5 shakes a day is too much. I feel so bloated and am having acid reflux. I’m trying to schedule the shakes so I’m not having one too late ( at least two hours before I go to bed) but it is difficult. I’m feeling like I need to get up at o-dark-thirty to get a shake in so I can go to bed at a decent hour without the acid reflux. Help!

This is normal. It is almost like an initiation phase that will pass. I had a lapband in 2012. On Jan 8 I revised to bypass and had my gall bladder removed. I am still not past the misery stage but getting there. Gas pain is the worst. Keep the faith it will get better.

Had my surgery on Monday. My pain only lasted a few days. Gas-X really helped for me. Not even taking Tylenol anymore. The more you move around the better. Small sips of beverages was the key for me to not overload. Not having any problems getting my required amount of liquids. Right now only doing one to one and a half Protein Shakes a day with a coffee cup full of strained cream Soup. Hot Decaf tea really helped me. My doctor told me it would be hard to get 60 plus grams of Protein in the first week just to shoot for 30 to 40. I'll be on liquids and Soups until next Thursday for my post-op appointment.

Hoping to have my procedure by the end of this month. My doctor had me start the preop diet on January 1st. which has been very challenging as other than Clear Liquids I get to pick out 6 very low calorie diet items. Most of the items are pretty horrible, hoping they give me my date soon so I can see a finish line for the unappealing choices.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
