Recommended Posts

Hi everyone !

Im 17 days post op and I know i can’t drink til later on. But I was just wondering when did y’all start drinking. I also know carbonated drinks are a no go like beer and such. Im more of a cocktail person. Before surgery I was a social drinker.

about three years out (our clinic just required one year, though). But then, I don't drink a lot - maybe a glass or two of wine a month.

Like @catwoman7, probably about 2 years post-op after I hit goal.

Generally only on vacations or special occasions, which is about the only time I'm willing to stray from plan a little.

To be fair, drinking is not something I do much socially mostly because I don't do much socializing.

Be cautious of addiction transfer.

Good luck,

Tek

I had a gin & tonic (well & regularly stirred to reduce the gas), which I truly sipped for hours, at about 8 weeks. Then another one about a month or so later. Honestly they didn’t taste the same & I didn’t enjoy them as much. I chose G&Ts as I was very sensitive to sweet & preferred the bitter of the tonic. I only have a drink maybe once a month or less often. Usually only one. I still take a while to drink it & sometimes I don’t finish it. I don’t know if the alcohol affects me more quickly or if I process it more quickly as I drink so little & so slowly to make a real judgement.

I used to have a large glass of wine or scotch (or both) every night, sometimes one at lunch too if out. but I really don’t miss it now. My friends all drink & it doesn’t affect our dynamic if I don’t or only have one drink. More champagne for them they say! I’m more selective about what I drink - quality over quantity hence the champagne.

May be remember all the empty calories your friends are drinking while the number on your scales continues to go down.

i just wrote a long-ish post about alcohol yesterday, ha.

instead of putting it all here again, i'll just include the link for reference:

take it as personal anecdote, a validation, or a cautionary tale, however u see fit.

Two ppl I know who had WLS waited about a year to drink alcohol. I myself, never drank. Sad to say the beers and cocktails kept piling on over the course of the following year and before you know it one gained 22lbs the other 20lbs. That's only after one year of going back to alcohol. Like many they thought they could enjoy an occasional brewski. Sadly not the case. I have found through my group sessions this happens quite often.

I waited about six months. I usually do spirits and some kind of non-carbonated mixer (unsweetened iced tea or sugar free lemonade/limeade work well). Be careful if you've lost a lot of weight, though...me at 245 could drink a LOT more than me at 95, so you definitely want to try it the first time when you're either at home or have a Designated Driver because I guarantee your tolerance will be much lower than you expect. I HAVE to limit myself to 1-2 servings (not "drinks", servings of alcohol, of which many cocktails contain more than one) or I get sloppy.

I want to point out that I only drink once a month before someone pipes up to tell me I'm on a train with stops back in Fattown and Chubbyville again. Learning to indulge intelligently and moderaterly, in my opinion, is a key to long term success.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
