11 days from gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

I had surgery April 27th (9 days ago) I am drinking 64 ozs of fluids a day and now up to 1 cup of broth once a day. I am struggling to reach my Protein intake though. My question is should I be feeling full or anything when I drink Water or the broth? I don't have any feelings of being full at all almost like my stomach is the same. I can drink a 10 Oz bottle of water in 20 mins and take normal drinks not sips. I am still in excruciating pain on my left side when I move sit up or walk. It feels like I'm being stabbed and someone is ripping through my stomach on that side is that normal?

As far as your Protein, try adding unflavored protein to broth, Water, and other drinks. I have protein in everything I consume right now (surgery May 1). It doesn't have to be a whole scoop, maybe a half. It definitely helps getting your requirements in. As for the other question, I'm not sure, and hopefully, someone else has the answer. For me, I sip about an oz every 10 minutes. I have noticed that if I drink too much, too fast, my left side hurts.

I had my surgery 2 days before you and was advanced to purees. I don't feel particularly full when consuming anything: Water, Protein Shakes, cottage cheese, etc.

I don't have any pain anymore though.

I'm on full liquid for 2 weeks post op.

Yeah, the staging guidelines are essentially arbitrary.

My "patient's bible" says 10 days of full liquids, but the physician's assistant told me to advance to purees after my one-week appointment.

fluids (and purees for the most part, too) go right through you, so you won't feel full. You'll start to feel the restriction once you start eating solid food.

also, you've had nerves cut, and it takes them awhile to start to regenerate - which again, that should start up again about the time you move to solid food, too.

also, keep in mind that your "full" signals (once you start feeling them) might be different than they were before surgery. Mine are different - I get this uncomfortable pressure in my chest, and I know if I keep going, I'm going to be sorry. I've read about other people getting a runny nose or sneezing when they're full. It might take some time to figure out what your new "full" signal is, too..

When can I start puree?

Usually after your two week liquid. But it really comes down to the advisement of your team.

I found a flavorless Protein Powder that dissolves in hot or cold food or drinks. “Vital Proteins collagen Peptides unflavored.” It has 18 grams of Protein for 2 scoops. I put it in my coffee in the morning. I’ve put it in broth and cold Vitamin Water in the evening if I haven’t reached my protein goal. I started on soft foods on week 3 and I’m 25 days out from bypass.

This is my second bypass surgery. I had my 1st in 2019. Found out the end of last year that staples had come loose and I was leaking into old stomach that was still attached to pouch. This time they took out the rest of my stomach. I woke up from surgery with horrible pain on left side. This is the start of the fourth week for me and the first time I’ve had no pain. Went to family doctor and he prescribed Gabapentin for nerve pain and a muscle relaxer. I had a horrible cough for 2 weeks after surgery and he told me he was sure I had pulled the muscles on my left side. It hurt from my lower back left side all the way around to just above belly button. Talk to your surgeon to be sure there is nothing wrong. My dr. Checked for hernias. Last time it took about 4 weeks before I started feeling “normal” again. Stay strong. It is worth it. I lost 130 pounds with 1st surgery and 26 so far with this surgery.

That is exactly where my pain is at. From my belly button all the way around to my lower left back. I have my first follow up with the surgeon on the 15th so I will mention it to him then hopefully nothing wrong.

Thanks yall. I hate the pain that I am in I've sure never felt nothing like this before in my life.

I am 4 and half weeks post op now. Just before my 3rd week I was having intense pains on my right side and my left closer to my belly button. It felt like a hot knife was stabbing through me. I contacted my team as well as a post I put up here and was told that it is actually normal though not everyone will experience it. 2 out of 6 incisions are to muscle and the insides take far longer to heal. I found that using a binder or Spanx like underwear helped immensely and now the worst has passed and I no longer use either. Best to you and your journey and hope the pain also passes you quickly.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
