September 2022 surgery buddies

Recommended Posts

Hello all! Just found this site. I have my procedure on Friday! Super nervous. I started my journey at 323lbs from my first visit about 5 months ago. I'm on day 4 of my liver shrink diet. I'm currently 295.8 LBS. My Goal weight is 210. I will then see how I feel and maybe try for under 200!

Hello everyone! My surgery date is September 24! Super excited! South Florida! Any south Florida people on a similar journey and timeline?

Hello MaimiJoe, so you had surgery, and then 4 days later you had a hurricane?!!? Praying that you weren't directly affected. How's it going for you?

So I had my bypass done Thursday Spt 29. I’m still having some random pains under my left breast. Plus when I drink, I get such a full nauseous feeling I get discouraged to drink. I feel like I’m barely drinking enough, but I’m afraid of getting dehydrated and not getting enough nutrition. Advice?

Checking in on everyone. How are you guys doing after surgery?

I made the mistake of ignoring my body’s full signals yesterday and ended up making myself sick. Lesson learned!!!

I had surgery on 9/13 and am down 20 lbs.

Had mine on Sept 28th! It's been an overwhelming experience, but I've been learning a lot about myself & I've been sooo motivated. Very excited for these next few years20220929_130730.jpg

I think we all have a learning curve to deal with. I am still trying to learn my body’s cues to tell me when I am full. I made the mistake of trying a cookie the other night and paid the price. But I learned my lesson, so that won’t happen again anytime soon.
I am excited for us all. I hope everyone is doing well.

I hope you are feeling better. I know I had a bubble that caused me some discomfort until I could walk it out. I know the nutrition class I had really stressed the importance of getting your Water in after surgery. I am also having issues with that but found drinking flavored water or chicken broth helps me get my fluids in. Since my favorite water (metromint) is no longer made it have bought Mio (or store brand generics) to flavor my bottled water. That has really helped me.
I also take my Multivitamin twice a day (since week 3}.
I hope you are doing well. The phases seem to have gone by quickly for me, I am on week 2 of soft foods now. October 18th seemed so far away before I had surgery, but it is a week away before I can eat regular food. Good luck, you’ve got this😊

Checking in and would love a buddy that had gastric sleeve - my surgery was on 20th and I’ve been pretty lucky with no issues. I’ve definitely been more tired than normal but not too bad. I’m down about 15 pounds which is way less than i expected but still excited to see the scale moving in the right direction.

Hey! My sleeve was sept 20 as well. I’m down about 6 pounds since surgery but roughly 25 overall - most was from the pre-surgery diet. How are you feeling? I’m really tired consistently so I wonder if I’m Vitamin deficient or something.

My doc told me to take it easy and now i know why - I’m taking a ton of Vitamins but still find myself super low energy- I’m hoping once I’m on regular food it will help. Are you on soft foods yet?

Yup. I’m having tons of tuna and chicken. About 80-90g of Protein a day. Taking Vitamins but still exhausted. I was cleared to work out starting this week so maybe that will boost up my energy.

I had a banded gastric sleeve on 15th September so I'm just over 5 weeks post surgery. Things are very different over here in Australia I first saw my surgeon in July and a few weeks later booked a date that suited me based on what days the surgeon operates at my chosen hospital. I am not insured so I was able to withdraw the funds from my superannuation account. I had 2 weeks of pre op diet which consisted of 2 Meal Replacement shakes and then dinner of approx 100gms of Protein and 2 cups veggies so found it quite easy to follow. I'm currently on a soft diet slowly reintroducing foods to see what I can and can't tolerate it's certainly a learning curve. I take 2 Multivitamins a day which have everything in them that I need. So far I've lost just over 20kgs since I saw the surgeon and 11 kgs since surgery so 21kgs all up. I'm really happy with the changes so far and don't regret having the surgery at all. I journal most days and weigh myself once per week. I also take measurements. Everyone will cope differently. Some of you will lose tonnes of weight quickly others may be a bit slower. I'm going to try and not compare myself to others. Good luck to you all on your journey

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
