Loose skin vs. abdominal fat

Recommended Posts

How do you tell whether the pudginess you have left is loose skin or if it's still mostly/all belly fat? I am wearing a size 10/medium depending on the brand. I have a 32.5 in waist, and I'm at a BMI of 29. My weight loss has slowed down tremendously this month (today is exactly 9 months out). I thought it was all belly fat, but it's starting to feel a lot "squishier" and "looser" in the skin in my abdomen.

I really don't plan to have plastics (although the FUPA is redonkulous!) but I am trying to gage how much more of my belly fat I can expect to lose.

I had a DEXAscan - it's one of the more accurate ways of finding out how much fat you have. Not the kind you get at a doctor's office - those just measure bone density. But the kind they have at university sports labs or those commercial places like DEXAFit. They'll run you around $100-150. But it'll tell you what your fat percentage is, among other things.

I had mine when I weighed 146 lbs. I wanted to see how much more I needed to lose. I was surprised when the technician said - "you're done. You have 22% body fat - you don't need to lose any more!". (I've since gained weight though, unfortunately....). I'm glad I did it, though - otherwise I would have kept going.

The dexa scan is a great idea & is more accurate than the punch & squish test which is what I did/do. 😁. My loose skin is squishy, softer & sort of feels more thin than the fatty bits. The fatty bits still have some body & density. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My belly is the same but I think mine is a combination of fat and loose skin

Thanks @catwoman7. I have had two DEXA scans, but I hadn't thought of that as a way to check the fat in my stomach. I'll schedule another soon.

I had to check my results because I wasn't sure if it broke the results down that much (i.e., whether they tell you how much fat is in your stomach). Mine does break it down into left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg, and....trunk. So yes - it does. Or at least mine does (although trunk also includes chest - it didn't break it down further than that)

Yes, they do. I scheduled one for next week. I just looked at my last results from Feb 2022, and I've only lost about 20 lbs since then so it might not be too different. I am feeling a bit too obsessed with my weight/stats at this point, but oh well...

I feel like you read my mind!!
I am totally wondering this stuff too. These last 20 pounds have felt like I am becoming a deflated balloon in all sorts of places and I wonder if (hope?) I can lose at least some of the flabbiness.
I am curious to hear what you make of your new dexa scan soon!

32.5 sounds so much better than 37 😭😭

I am about 29 BMI too. But my waist is still big, about 37 inches. I stored majority of my fat abdominally, so I reckon it'll take forever for fat to dissolve down there for me, which majorly sucks 😤

Abdominal exercises and all sound great for toning but they won't get rid of the fat. I guess I'll have to wait and see how it looks once and if I reach under the BMI of 25.

Weirdly, my waist has now gone up to 34 inches. I can't figure out if I was measuring wrong before or if I'm measuring wrong now... or if there's something else going on that is a problem. I am not pregnant, and I haven't lost/gained any weight since.

It’s like your body & remaining fat resettles after you have been stable for a little while. When I stabilised, I was very straight up & down & was disappointed I had lost my hour glass shape. But a few months later my waist was back - no weight change either. Still have no butt (ha!) but there is a distinct in & out of hips, waist & boobs again - yay!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
