Getting ready to have this surgery

Recommended Posts

Most do really well and since its a tool some have better weight loss than others. My Dr told me it is not uncommon for some to lose 30 lbs in the first month post op but again depends on the person and the circumstances. I am 3 weeks post op and have only lost 14 lbs. I struggle or I should say my body does with letting loose of the excess weight. I am however losing inches everywhere. so thats a positive.

The surgery is just a tool so losing the weight is still not EASY. You still have to make the right choices and measure and log everything and head hunger doesn’t go away. That being said it’s the only thing that’s ever worked for me.

I almost feel guilty for admitting how easy it was for me to lose weight after the surgery. Yes, I followed the rules, but my pouch did most of the work for me. The first year is when your pouch (or sleeve) is the most restrictive, so take advantage of it!!

2 1/2 years out, I can eat a lot more now, so I have to be more strict with myself, but it's still way easier than pre-WLS.

So follow the rules, and you will do great!!!

You will eat much smaller portions at each meal though and you will make healthier choices with your food so it should end up being far less calories per day.

After surgery you will eat a lower calorie amount than that for a while at least and some nutritionists recommend like 800 through the weight loss phase. Some will have you on a higher calorie goal. You will lose faster than a normal diet though because you will definitely be eating less calories in the beginning. You will start out at probably less than 600 though.

I have been averaging about 15lbs/month since surgery 12 weeks ago.
Today for example, I restricted myself to only getting my Protein bc I have been enjoying some various foods that I hadn’t been previously (small slice of veggie pizza, few French fries, bite of a sandwich, etc.). Yesterday I did a strong leg workout, too. Today I woke up and the scale was up .4 lbs and just said okay. Get to work. Have had 2 Protein Shakes and a packet of Quest protein chips today. Met my goal. I’m not hungry - just drinking Water, getting my Vitamins / Calcium - will maybe have a small salad or some fresh sweet peppers a little later. Fiber is always nice.

This is mostly in response to you saying you skip meals. Just make sure you’re hitting your goals. This is a dreamy procedure when you stick to the plan!

Thanks im just worried about this surgery . I have been overweight for a long time and have tryed all kinds of diets and nothing has worked . This had caused me to have all kinds of health issues and I'm only 56 . I feel I'm to young to be having all these health issues . I try to get my 60 to 70 protein in a day. I drink shakes and the Quest stuff . I watch what I'm eating . But alot of times when I drink a shake then I end of skipping a meal cause I'm not hungry . The nurse did give me heck for not eating 3 meals a day. I'm not a big eating . I'm good with one meal a day and drinking Water . But they say that's a no no .

Do you have specific medical issues that necessitate you eat three “meals” a day because my nutritionist was fine with my having just a Protein Shake for Breakfast. I would ask your nutritionist when you speak with them but if it was for medical reason I would ask the surgeon.

30 lbs is actually on the high side (the exception rather than the rule, actually....) - most of us seem to lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range the first month. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started at well over 300 lbs.

I know a lot of people who just have a Protein Shake for breakfast. Some people can't handle solid food first thing in the morning. The dietitian at my clinic said a protein shake is better than nothing!

also, I was the same as you before I had surgery - the most I could ever lose was about 50 lbs, and even getting that much off was really tough - there were only a couple of times when I managed to do it. And then, of course, it came right back on. Surgery was the only thing that worked for me. That said, you do have to really work at it -- but if you stick to your program, you WILL lose weight...

Right but are you sure that you can’t have a shake as a Meal Replacement? Or do they want your shakes to be Snacks? ?

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
