Nervous Nelly

Recommended Posts

Okay so I am in the process of getting all the legwork done to be approved by my insurance. I have all the support in the world from my PCP and my GI doctors. But I'm just a little nervous but extremely excited! Has anyone had cold feet while they were going through the process? I meet with my surgeon on January 15th, and I'm attempting to have everything done before I go so I can get on my way. I know this is the right thing to do and will help my health and life tremendously...but I'm still a little scared of what happens after. Okay...enough rambling.:paranoid

If anyone has any words of wisdom, I would greatly appreciate it!

I think it's normal, we all got cold feet. I know a lot of us were in the surgery prep about to get wheeled in and it was almost too much to bear!! Luckily they gave me some doped up meds while I was waiting, so I started to think "Ah who cares." hehe.

Just know you'll be fine, and try to think happy thoughts right now :scared:

My words of wisdom...you are normal! Experiencing normal feelings.

It was so hard waiting for insurance decision. Then once I got surgery date, a friend that doesn't know I'm having the surgery made negative comments about it, which definitely made me question myself for a few hours.

Then I realized.....we are doing this for ourself, not for others. We are doing this for our health and to improve our standard of living. We aren't just doing it to be a size 2. You have the support of your doctors, which is great!

The thought of the changes we will have to make is scary....generally most people are looking at having to change eating habits we have had for years! Or even our whole life!

But if you look at all the posts on this forum, and look at everyone's signatures and weight changes, they are doing fantastic! That helps keep me going when times get tough or when I start having doubts and cold feet.

If they can do it, we can too! 6 months from now, your life will be totally different. More than you could have imagined!

Good luck with your insurance!

Yep! Very normal! I remember being fearful.....kinda like a drug addict going to drug rehab....I suppose. I felt like I was going to give up my drug!

LOL! Best decision I made!

Good luck

I never had a 'last meal'. Sometime around being banded, Jachut posted about how the last meal syndrome is a misconception for bandsters. I believed her (and she was right!).I went on my liquid diet without much thought about 'not being able to eat again'. When I was back on solids, I did have 5 months (while fills were not working) where I was able to eat anything, so I was glad I didn't risk botching my liver for surgery with a last meal splurge. Then slowly foods started going away, and I honestly don't miss them. I know some people have mentioned missing them, but I am more fascinated than woeful about the fact that I'll never eat a hamburger the way you are suppose to eat one. I watch DH eat them and I think.. I can't do that.. I hope I never can again.

It is normal to feel scared. After surgery my panic attacks, anxiety, and depression kicked in. I was like WHAT HAVE I DONE!:faint:But I turned to religion, I turned to my self-help program, and therapy. I always tell everyone it is a very personal choice. When I do start to get kind anxious and worried, about long term issues, I think of what my surgeon said. "It's reversible". I take comfort in knowing all my organs are still in place down there, just not as surrounded with fat. But here I am 2 months out and 40 lbs down. Just be prepared for the changes. If you need help, ask for it. If you are having doubts, talk to your doctor. I had 2 pages of questions to ask my doctor, before I even considered setting up my surgery date.

As for the cold feet it is inevitable. I did the same thing. When they were getting ready to wheel me in I was having 2nd thoughts. I even told the nurse that. She stopped the gurney right there and then. Then I kind of felt of embarrassed (felt like a chicken), so I was like just do it. Now I am glad I went through with it. This surgery has really made me take inventory of my life. I don't know if surgery causes everyone to have such a profound life change, but I am sure glad I did it. Hang in there. One day at a time. I don't know if you are religious, but the serenity prayer has really helped me. Good luck with your journey!

P.S. I wish my doc would of given some meds to chill out while I waited. I definitely needed them. :omg:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
