VSG to RNY - First time diagnosed with GERD. Two years post op!

Recommended Posts

I did a revision from VSG to RNY two years ago. I NEVER had GERD before.. but I have it now!!!! My throat feels swollen all the time. I have appt to get upper GI imaging, but I'm kind of freaking out in the meantime. I'm on pepcid and omeprazole and it's BARELY allowing me to eat/function normally.

that's odd - RNY usually improves if not outright cures GERD. Sorry you're going through this!!

Yea that is odd. I always thought gastric bypass eliminates it since the esophagus is no longer connected to the stomach where the acid is produced.

esophagus is still connected - it's just that most acid is produced in the lower part of the stomach, which is stapled or sewn off from the upper part that becomes the pouch.

Did they do a special test to officially diagnosis you with gerd to get insurance to approve the revision?

I revised 2 years ago in May and still have GERD. I am still on my PPI Dexilant but I no longer have esophagitis D.

How is everything going? I am 3 1/2 months out from my sleeve and for the first time in my life, I started having HORRIBLE gerd symptoms 2 days ago. I'm uncomfortable during the day, but at night is when I'm in agony. I'm on 40mg of Omeprazole for 6 months because of the surgery, so I'm shocked this is happening. I made a post titled "Is this GERD?" because I literally have never felt anything like this before and it's freaking me out. I'm scared that if GERD is starting 3 1/2 months out from surgery, I'm going to have to be miserable for years before I can be approved for a revision. And I thought bypass was kind of the gold standard for eliminating GERD, and now I'm nervous having read a few threads on here about people getting the bypass and developing GERD after, or getting it because of GERD and it not going away.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
