I tried to be a big dog-- wound up on the porch!

Recommended Posts

I tried to be a big dog-found out I was still just a pup! I am about 10 weeks post-op. I was out and about this weekend, and stopped at a stir-fry restaurant. I did order a lot of Protein, but it (of course) comes with rice and you have to have baby corn, Water chestnuts, etc., etc.. I ate a little, it was so good, ate another bite. (Can you see what coming??) By the time I left, I was sweating, and it's a 30 minute ride home. I was fortunate I had a plastic shopping bag... It was the first time I got the foamies. I would drive a little, then find a place where I could pull over and retch til my toes curled up.. Go a little further...repeat... Back to soft food, and no more stir-fry for a long time!.

I have been Introducing solids for the past 2 weeks. Constantly overeat and dread the following 2-3 hours. Today my meal was tasting so good. I had about five bites and literally, out loud said, "girl, you do not want another bite. You will regret it!" Lol- so I put it away.

I wonder if it was the texture of the food or if it was the oils and stuff they use to cook it in at restaurants? Either way I agree steer clear for a while and maybe when you do try it again try eating the ingredients at home first one at a time and without all the extra oils and stuff. Many people do not tolorate rice well post op. I am fine with it but many say it just sits too heavy.

Happened to me a couple of times. Tbh for me it was about quantity. I think and want to eat more than I can.

I'll bet you learned the same lesson I did all those years ago: Don't eat new dogfood in public. Sniff around it? Sure. But bury it somewhere safe and eat it later in a safe place.

Good luck,

Tek

Sounds more like dumping than foamies but??? You don’t tend to sweat (cold sweats) with the foamies. It passes quickly & you only vomit a couple of times & it’s more regurgitation than vomiting - much gentler almost bubbling up of the last thing or two you ate that caused the problem. Did your heart rate increase? Did you feel drained or tired? That’s dumping. Did you have discomfort like something was stuck & lots of saliva you had to spit up? That’s the foamies.

The rice could have caused your blood sugar to rise. There could have been sugar in the sauce in the stir fry. Sugar & blood sugar spikes contribute to dumping. Being so soon out after surgery, your digestive system is still pretty sensitive & it doesn’t take much to react negatively. Plus bypass makes you more likely to experience dumping.

Whichever you had, both are not pleasant. Tread lightly & slowly to begin. Don’t think you need to go back to purées. More just be extra careful with your food choices. And, as Tek advised, test new foods at home first.

Yeah sounds like the foamies. Been there, done that. I can only eat a tiny tiny portion of bread or Pasta or potatoes now without getting them.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
