30 years post RNY, I still (rarely) get dumping syndrome from too much sugar. My upcoming revision will probably make that more likely, although I'm pretty committed to abstaining from sugar for life. If I go off the rails, I have to expect retribution!

Dumping is so unpleasant that it is "good" because it teaches you what NOT to eat.

I still have an occasional slice of pizza although I can't eat more than 1.

This surgery is unpredictable though and some people seem to have far more restrictions in terms of foods they can't handle. For me, I have trouble with any kind of ice cream, heavy cream, or whipped cream. I once had a tiny chocolate fondant with ice cream and then a tiny piece of pumpkin pie with cream and both times that did not go well. Everthing else I have no trouble with but I also don't crave a lot of crappy food.

I'd strongly recommend therapy to anyone feeling they lose control of their eating, and for some reason, group therapy works really well for this kind of problem if available to you.

100% agree. Therapy is so essential to long term success. I am SO grateful for the work I did before surgery that got me to a place where I could use the tool properly. So, so much of this is mental & emotional.

ETA - I'm only 3 months out, so still very solidly in the Protein and veggies phase. But I absolutely know that a balanced diet, including carbs of various sorts, will be in my future. Adherence is so vital during the active weight loss phase (1 year or so). But as you reach maintenance, you will learn how to incorporate other foods that help you maintain vs. continuing to lose weight.

you could probably eat really bad food after about 6 months, might feel uncomfortable but youd be able to eat it.

i guess noone wants to tell you LOL

so i wouldnt miss that food too much or try to indulge because 5years down the line if you dont hit goal or you feel like the surgery was pointless the feeling of being able to eat pizza just wont be worth it.

Although at first things are very restrictive, they become more loose after a few weeks. Like others said, I will have thin crust pizza once every couple weeks, equivalent of one slice. I also steal 3-4 of my children’s french fries on weekends, and am satisfied.

However, I haven’t eaten anything with added sugar since the sleeve. Not even a bite. The occasional sugar-free chocolate, as well as Protein Bars, more than satisfies me.

I think it really is dependent on the person, but this works for me.

I am three months out and I enjoy small "treats" occasionally. I will eat a tiny (about 1.5 oz) piece of cake on a holiday, but not a huge piece and not every day. My birthday was on Thanksgiving this year so we celebrated it the day before. I had about 1.5 oz of chocolate mousse cake on the celebration day, and then the next day was Thanksgiving so I had about 1.5 oz of a different cake (my mom keeps the local French bakery in business between her cake orders and croissants and baguette - she is not obese, just overweight). The next night we had a ton of leftovers plus a cake someone had brought and I decided two nights of dessert in a week was enough. I didn't want to start eating dessert again every day.

I also will eat a cracker or some cream of wheat if my stomach is upset, which happens a lot. AND... I drink diet soda! My surgeon said after 4 weeks we could have carbonation, so I drink it again. But very slowly, not like 6 cans a day like before!

I eat at restaurants most of the time because I travel for work. I try to make the best choices I can, but I know it's not perfect. Still, I'm not going to quit my job that I love; I'm just going to learn to make the best choices I can. I'm not aiming for perfect.

I’m a bit over a year out, and I’m firmly in camp carbs are fine. I know there’s no way I can eliminate carbs forever. It’s not the way I want to live my life. I did eliminate candy and pastries/cookies, because I feel like those are a slippery slope for me, but no fruit or potatoes or even sushi and beer just isn’t going to work for me. I exercise a fair amount and I keep my overall calorie count down, but I’m not giving up carbs for life. We go out to a local pizza place on occasion where you can get a slice and a salad. I always eat the salad first and have a few bites of the pizza before I get full. So no, I don’t go crazy like I used to, but I still am having some.

Same camp. Restrictive diets - at least of this pretty extreme kind - will be the first step to get back to obesity for most. Eventually, you'll fail, and then what. For most it's probably helpful to really work through whatever food issues they have in order to exercise moderation, flexible control, and importantly, self-love.

I don't give up all carbs. I do give up sugar, flour, rice, potatoes, and processed foods. I get my carbs from fruit and sweet potatoes. But then, I am a sugar/food addict and all of those on the list are trigger foods for me.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
