Exercising after surgery

Recommended Posts

Just curious to know if and when you started to exercise after surgery? If so what are some of the things your doing?

I do some light stuff, like walking my dog around the neighborhood.

I suffer from Fibromyalgia and am in a lot of pain most days.

Looking forward to swimming very soon as the weather is getting nicer.

I don't want to join a gym because I know I will never go and it will just be a waste of money.

the only exercise I was cleared to do for the first month after surgery was walk. At four weeks out, I was cleared for everything except for weights. I was allowed to do weights starting at eight weeks out.

the first year after surgery I mostly did walking, swimming, Water aerobics, and yoga. I still do all that plus bicycling and Zumba.

Walking is pretty much all I did for the first few hundred pounds. By the time I got to 100 pounds overweight my spouse and I were walking miles a day people watching in various places.

At about that time I set myself a challenge to see if I could run 3 miles in 30 minutes, which I did in about a month. Shock of shocks I discovered that I enjoyed running. I kept increasing my distance until I eventually ran 5 marathons.

Do what you like. Who knows where it will lead you?

Good luck,

Tek

I'm very curious about this. I'm 20 days out from surgery (pre-op) and I'm currently hiking/walking 4-6x a week (making sure I hit some hills/stairs), and I just started doing a little resistance/strength training. I just want to build a little muscle and help my cardiovascular system. Eventually I want to get rid of my fat, flat ass and change it for a nice one. I enjoy working out and I have friends that will do it with me...

So long story short my #1 goal is a healthy recovery from surgery with no complications, so I'm wondering how much I can do without pulling on my stomach. Should I wait four weeks to start some minor resistance exercises? Or the whole 6 weeks? That would be hard for me. Everything engages the abs so I'm just wondering. (I will be discussing this with my surgeon).

My surgeon cleared me to run at 2 weeks ("as long as you're not a fool about it"), to bike and jump rope at 4 weeks, and cleared me completely at 6 weeks. I now run 2-3 times a week and do CrossFit 3-4 times a week, though one of the runs is always an "active recovery" run where I make sure my heart rate stays around 140 bpm (or, if you don't have a monitor, you should be able to hold a conversation without being out of breath).

You can never go wrong with walking. It's the best exercise there is.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
