How long did you stay in the hospital?

Hi there - I'm having bypass on 9/28 and my doctor's office won't tell me how long I should expect to stay in the hospital. They said I could be discharged the same day or maybe 1 night. I'm not sure if they are trying to discharge patients same day to get them out of the hospital quicker because of Covid or if no overnight stay is a reasonable expectation?

I think it’s because they honestly don’t know how you will respond after the surgery. I was told 1-2 days and I was there for almost 3 days due to a bad reaction to the anesthesia. My hospital has a separate section for coronavirus patients, I had my own room and Bariatric nurses as well. So I think they aren’t telling you a timeline because it all depends on how you feel afterwards. Hope this helps.

I have surgery in the morning on friday. The surgeon told me at the preop appointment I will be released sunday (barring complications)

My surgery was on a Monday and my surgeon said I would stay in the hospital one or two nights, but I'm 65, have had two previous abdominal surgeries, and was also having a hernia repair and a repair of an esophageal stricture, all of which can complicate things. I ended up staying 4 nights.

RNY Thursday home Tuesday.

Hey guys! So my surgery date was 8/24 and now I am officially apart of this weight loss community. I had the Loop DS. Better known as SIPS. It was done at Lenox Hill in NY by Dr. Roslin himself. I am doing well so far I am still in the hospital as of 8/26. Don’t believe everything you hear about these surgeries everyone is different! I threw up blood and mucus the first two days after surgery and was told that it was expected and it happens after the surgery. Didn’t know that at all. The gas pains are the worst!!!! It felt like someone was trying to twist my back and sides. I still haven’t released any gas as of yet now I’m just dealing with soreness. I have the best hospital staff around to help me. And I am remaining diligent in walking. I try to do atleast 3-5 laps around the nurse station. But please people who are considering weight loss surgery just know that This isn’t a walk in the park !! You will be sore which is expected and taking down just 1oz. Of water is a job !! Be well.

Yay! Another Loop DS 'er. Your experience sounds so similar to mine. I also threw up the first few days and it was blood. I stayed 3 nights because of this. I also had really crampy back pain on the left side of my back, and I'd be nauseated, and they'd give me nausea meds and it wouldn't help, but if they have me pain meds the nausea got better. I came to find out later that was most likely a kidney stone, because 11 days after surgery that same pain came back and had I had burning when I urinated, and thought it was a Uti, but I went to my primary and my urine was red from blood. I didn't have a Uti. And then I realized it had to be a kidney stone.
I should have known. I'm an ER nurse turned stay at home mom and I've seen so many kidney stones, but it didn't even register, because I had just had surgery and figured the pain was from that. But I had an appt with my surgeon Monday and when I told him about that he agreed it had to be a kidney stone.
So I think THAT was what caused me to have so much trouble in the hospital and not the surgery itself. Once I was over that recovery has been a breeze!
Congratulations on being on the other side now! It gets better every day!

I had the Loop DS as well and also vomited blood the first two days. My mom was in the room with me the first time it happened and she panicked. I really wish they would have warned me about it, because I thought something was wrong with me and panicked myself until they told me it was normal and it was okay because it was just old blood. And holy hell did it HURT! For me the vomiting blood was by far worse than the gas pain!

I had RNY and went in on a Monday morning and checked out at noon Tuesday.

I had surgery at 7:30 am on a Thursday and went home at 1:30 pm on Friday... had to walk 10 laps, drink 32ozs of liquids and urinate before I was released. No complications... thank God!

Ok so surgery went well for me. I just had to learn to sip slowly or you will get the throwing up feeling but nothing will come out. I stayed in the hospital overnight. I was originally told no one would be able to go with me on the floor but that wasn't the case. My husband stayed with me for almost two hours. He then came back when I was on the floor. Visiting hours were 2 to 6. He stayed for a little bit but let me rest. I was able to walk to the bathroom by myself several times. Overall not a bad surgery.

One night. I was discharged at 6pm the day after my surgery. Pain was manageable so I was walking the day of surgery. Today is day 4 and I drove myself to a hair appointment. Discomfort managed with Tylenol since I got home.

Sleeve - 2 nights..

I had surgery on the 27th (sleeve) and came home last night.

Sleeve, then spent one night at The Hampton Inn and Suites, with a nurse attending.

10 years ago, had a sleeve. I was 54 years old with asthma. Stayed 2 nights to clear my lungs from anesthesia and make sure I was oxygenating well. I had surgery 100 miles away from my home, so stayed in local hotel just in case for two more days. Then home.
