Hey All! Went to the free seminar at the True Results location off Data Point yesterday. Found it imformative - but knew pretty much all they talked about from this forum! The personal were super attentive and very nice. I was impressed by that. I have a Diagnostic Evaluation today and afterwards will travel to Dr. Wright's office downtown for a consult. (Moving rapidly because I am self pay and ideally the best time for surgery for me is week after Christmas.) They were kind of "pushing" Dr. Gonzales as he performs his surgery their at the True Results building; however, from what I have read on this site I think I would feel more comfortable with Dr. Wright or Dr. Carcamo. Any words of advice from previous patients of Wright, Caracamo or Gonzales?

Hi Racetrack - a friend of mine here at the office had Dr Carcamo do her surgery and has been very, very pleased with her results. I am thinking that if I get the approval, I will have him do mine as well. I am still waiting on insurance approval :)

Piddles -

I have met with Dr. J. Keith Wright with Dr. Carcamo's office also - and I have surgery scheduled for Jan. 2! Dr. Wright seems like a great guy - super bedside manner. I have a meeting with nutritionist on Thursday and then countdown to surgery! I'm excited but nervous too!

Congratulations on starting the new year with a new you. My friend has also seen Dr Wright and said he was very nice as well. Are you going to have the surgery done on Datapoint or downtown? Maybe we will meet one day at one of the support meetings. I wish you well and a very Merry Christmas. Natalie

My Lap Band will be done by Doctor Wright at the Nix Hosp. on December the 31st. He really is very good, if there is any questions he will not do the surgery until he has the answer.

RTW and Gene, keep us updated after your surgeries. I'm making an appointment to attend a seminar with True Results next month. I'm very interested to see how things turn out for you after your surgery. Thanks. M

Several people from my job used Dr.'s Wright and Carcamo @ the Nix. I am planning on using Dr. Carcamo. I have only heard good things about both.

Hey all -

Dr. Wright performed my surgery yesterday. Everthing went well. I was surprised that Dr. Wright uses glue on the outside incisions so there is relatively no scarring. (That's what the nurses told me). I was at the surgery center at 6 a.m. and back at my house at 10:30 a.m.

Hi RaceTW, glad your surgery went well. I also am going thru True Results fnishing up my insurance requirements. I most likely will not get approved & will be self pay. I was told 15K$ was the cash price. What made you decide on Dr.Wright instead of Caracamo or even Dr. Rinicon(sp?) whose cash price is cheaper at 12k$ I will know in Feb whether I am approved thru insurance or not. I have been doing my medically supervised diet thru them for the last few months.

Also what was your pre-op diet & how long? Thanks for your help.

Also - on another thread I saw and advertisement for Dr. Jorge Rincon - he's with San Antonio Weight Loss Clinic. (Downtown SA) I went to website and they are having a free seminar on 12/11 at 6:30 p.m. - There was also an advertisement for $1,200.00 for surgery and 1 year post op fills. Just thought I'd share that.

I was banded by Dr Rincon . Feel free to PM Me with any questions you might have . He's an awesome doc

Marnie -

After I met with Dr. Wright I knew I wanted him to perform my surgery. He was very attentive and thorough in our first meeting.

My pre-op diet was two weeks of Adkins - I lost 8 pounds!

My only advise is meet with several doctors and go with the one you feel that you have a "connection" with.

I agree with Racetrack. Meet with several docs and see which one you connect with and can relate with . Also docs have different pre op diets, post op diets and post fill diets. you might find that one docs diet is one you can not follow and another is one that you can . Post fill "diets" are something to look into . My doc has a pretty conservative post fill diet . Its something i was not sure if i could follow before surgery , Its a breeze now for me . And part of the reason I have lost the amount of weight I have.

So its something to look into as well as the pre op and post op diets. All the docs have different versions.

HTH

Interesting I have my diagnostics evaluation on the 14th of this month with True Results. Hopefully I'll be able to find a doctor who suits me there.

Roughly, how many doctors did each of you meet with prior to your surgeries?

I went to 4 seminars before i decided on Dr Rincon . 3 were in Austin and then I Called and emailed Dr Rincon , what drove me to him initally was his price, then i started talking to others who were banded by him . Them when i called he personally took 30 mintues to speak to me on the phone . Docs just dont normally do that. That said a lot to me. After I started looking into him more and more info lead me to him .

No matter what do your research.

Ok, thanks. I'm devoting all my time these days (away from work) to complete and thorough research.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
