Issues with solids. Plz help me!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello there I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong..

I've been on shakes a long time no issues with that or yoghurt consistency...

Soon as I started this week some solids like healthy slice meat or a tiny 2oz chicken free range burger.. I had to chew a lot..

But as the burger was going down i could literally feel it going down my neck into my stomach felt weird and was Almost like indigestion until it settled in my stomach after about 10 mins but then I had to rush to toilet and some clear liquid came back up my throat with a little foam.. It has happened a few times..

Am I eating too quickly? Should I only have one bite then wait then have the next bite?

Rather than just chewing the whole 2oz burger quickly..

I've been doing amazing but until experimenting with solid stuff has not been pleasant...

So far I've tried some sliced meat which was ok but still felt weird going down.. The burger made me throw up some clear stuff...Took time to settle in my belly... Had 2 little cherry tomatoes that didn't agree with me at all came straight back up...

What am I doing wrong??????

Thank you everyone I'm 6.5 weeks post op.

Every program is different but in mine...No pork, lamb, hamburger, fibrous red meat for 6-8months. You can do like beef stew because meat just falls apart. So basically chicken and seafood with limited tender red meat. They said to avoid these because to heavy, fatty, and hard to digest. Scallops are my favorite little balls of Protein and do not bother my stomach. I do them with veg zoodles. Your not doing anything wrong in the beginning it's all trail and error. Picture a newborn infant some formulas agree with them and others don't. It will take sometime to figure out what your newborn stomach can tolerate and what it can't right now. What you did was called frothing or foaming look it up its common with vomiting

Perhaps you need something else inbetween before you go to solids...you have been on mostly liquids (with some yoghurt or hummus) for a while, maybe try some pureed foods for a week or two, then do a week or two of softs foods...just a thought

chicken is a NO go for most people, Also there is not set time on eating again, I am 7 months post and still really do not eat alot.

My advice is slow down let your body decide - Start with a Shrimp or Crab or soft white fish like halibut No oils no fats good quaility and eat it slow - It will pass and eventually you will be good to go. I agree also puree it Nothing better then a lobster tail pureed into a paste and eaten slowly.

Have fun its a journey and it will all come with time

like someone else said, chicken is hard for a lot of people at first. Try something softer and moister - like shrimp or tuna.

And chew until your food has an applesauce texture!

Refried Beans, thinned with broth, if needed, and cottage cheese were my go to Proteins at that point. Egg drop Soup was a winner, too. chicken and meat took a few more months.

And yes, you have to chew one bite and wait at least a full minute before taking another one.

Your meal should take about 15 to 20 minutes. One small bite at a time, chew chew and keep chewing until its pulverised. Swallow, and start again. Do not eat quickly, it can take up to 20 minutes before the brain realises your stomach was actually full 10 to 15 minutes before.

I had to take tiny bites and wait 30 seconds between bites so you may want to try that. I was cleared for all meats by 6 weeks but did have a few weeks between full liquids and meats with some soft foods so maybe try that next? I do also have issues if the meat is to dry. It didn’t agree with me either.

I think your bite was too big. In the beginning I was taking baby spoon sized bites - a 2 oz burger should be at LEAST 4 bites, if not 6. I turn a 3 oz sausage into 6 or 8 bites and in the beginning I was trying to take 5 mins between bites. Now I'm at 30 seconds or so and I see how I feel.

You have to retrain your tum just as someone said, like an infant. So you can't easily go from liquids (yogurt is considered a liquid in my program) to dense solids without issues.

Use meat lube (broths, gravy, braising liquid, and sauces) to lubricate your bites. Make EACH bite the size of a pencil eraser. Chew to kingdom come. Add a little lube. And swallow. Then wait a minute or two to see how it settles and repeat the next bite. If you feel discomfort, stop.

My progression was:

Foil wrapped fish (white fish litely poached in broth and seasoning in foil).

tuna and salmon mixed with tons of Greek yogurt and dijon mustard, hb egg, and 2% cottage cheese and blended until almost smooth. It was VERY wet and loose.

soft scrambled eggs mixed with Greek yogurt of light sour cream to make them very loose and creamy.

soft boiled eggs with butter.

over easy fried eggs.

egg white puffs (my fave!!)

sugar free and savory egg custards.

roasted smashed cauliflower (like mashed potatoes but low carb).

refried pumpkin

soups/stewps/chili made with turkey

chicken (canned) green bean casserole made baristyle

chicken pot pie casserole (no crust) made baristyle

lasagna bake no Pasta made baristyle

and then I progressed to things like salmon, ground meats, then chicken, pork, beef dense and lean.

I could not do burgers for months--way too dense and heavy feeling and too much fat.

From my experience. These foods tend to be hard to swallow/digest; Rice, Pasta and bread. If I'm out, and there isn't anything to order that doesn't have bread or something that might irritate me, I usually just order plain meat or the burger (Take out the patty) then just eat it by itself.

- I always have this in mind. Just because your food in-take might be restricted, doesn't mean you can't enjoy what others are enjoying on a day out, you just have to be creative ☺️

Yes your eating to quickly but it’s okay try soft meats first like chicken steamed or in broth, avocado with some hummus, turkey and chicken soft cold cuts. My doctor told me to stay far away from beef for a few months but I did have turkey meat balls and they were so good in broth. Don’t have anything grilled dries it out and that’s probably why it wouldn’t pass and gave you that feeling. Take it slow my friend I know it’s exciting and tempting but be careful and mindful of your stomach.

Okay it is definitely a learning process.. I have bought a nice multi cooker that does slow cooking and pressure cooking which will make any meat soft and tender 🙂

thanks for your tips!

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
