Bypass v’s Sleeve..... help!

Recommended Posts

Got my sleeve done in april 30. 2019
I am starting to experience some GERD but i think it is due to me trying new foods. I am still in the liquid stage of my diet but i am fully happy with my sleeve. My surgeon took out 85% of my stomach, so i will have the most optimal weightloss.

Hi
I’m on the last stage and just waiting for my surgery date, at my last visit with the consultant he asked me which surgery I was opting for
I was always opting for the sleeve and then decided on the bypass, can anyone tell me if they have had the same struggle with this decision and why you chose either the bypass or sleeve?
I’m so confused and can change my mind as late as going into the operating room so as much info from everyone will help me make that decision
Thank you

The reason I felt I HAD to do the Roux n Y full by pass was to heal my body of the effects of my acid reflux. From the first seminar at the hospital I had my surgery at( given by the surgeon who actually operated ) I learned that the full by pass gave me the best odds to lose the most weight AND heal the GERD that wrecked havoc on my insides for way too long.. I know many people who had great success with the sleeve but my surgeon was adamant it could increase my acid.. everyone must follow their own path.. since Feb. 4, 2019 , I’ve lost 52 lbs( 12 pre op from liver shrinking protocol diet) and NO ACID REFLUX .

RNY was something I was scared of but after research most sleeves get revision. My sister had sleeve and 4 years later she wants RNY. I love it sure its malabsorption so you take lot of supplements but one of BEST decisions ever if you are foodie! Everything has changed. Grille onions are my sweets now its CRAZY! And cakes dont even smell good. good luck on your path cant wait to follow your progress.

Hey how far out are you? Did you get lucky where you're not very hungry? Do you still get full quickly? Have you changed the foods you enjoy?

I am not very hungry at all. Sometimes I forget to have more then 90 calories! I am 7 weeks post op down 36 pounds from discharge day. When I make a good veggie like zucchini amd a chicken thigh I get full very quickly. Never thought that wojld happen. 5 bites im done. So many foods have changed for me also. fruit is WAY to sweet for me now so 2 bites its dessert if need be. bread is too sweet also. I love grilled onions now as my dessert! Crazy really. I dont love meat so much anymore used to eat ribeyes all week but now I make myself eat 1oz of chicken.

I chose bypass because:
#1: I’m 28. I have to make this lifestyle change last 40+ years (God willing).
#2: I didn’t want to have to convert down the road
#3: The statistics for the weight staying off long term were a little better with bypass

I’m happy with my decision at almost 8 months post op.

The surgeon actually told me I'd be a good candidate for Gastric Bypass. I was leaning that way myself. The idea of taking supplements forever didn't bother me as I was already taking most of them because I was a fussy eater. After researching more, like others have said I certainly didn't want gerd or to have to revise to RNY so I this was the best choice for me. I am about 3 and ½ months out now and I haven't ever really felt hungry, I hope it stays that way. I measure out what I eat, I have never really felt full. I have felt pressure and discomfort when eating to fast.

Never considered anythi g but RNY bypass, needed to lose quckly, take the pressure of my body before both hips joined my 2 knees, 1 thumb and an upper arm. Had Gerd from Hades and a 1st cousin that died from Esophageal Cancer. Didn't have time at 72 to go through a VSG and then a revision later. Besides I have Medicare/Medicaid, those Dudes got no sense of Humor and I knew, for me, this was the once- in- a--lifetime surgery!

Originally, I was planning the sleeve, but after doing research, I ended up going with the bypass. More weight loss, better staying off, and well, I feel pretty good at nine weeks out.

I got the sleeve back in Feb '17 and now am in full research mode to get the bypass done sometime early next year. I should have done it in the first place, but like many others, thought the sleeve would be less invasive and I wouldn't have to worry about supplementation the rest of my life. But since the operation I've have had very little restriction and the only thing that kept the weight off was sticking to a very strictly controlled low-carb diet. Once I tried to integrate back into regular life (albeit with smaller portions) I gained a lot of weight back. It's clear I have a sugar addiction and I hope the bypass will cure me of that through negative reinforcement (although I know that's not guaranteed). All my attempts to "reset" my sleeve have failed, so I hope this process will be the one that sticks.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
