How many grams of sugar is too much sugar?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm currently two weeks post OP after my gastric sleeve surgery and I'm finally getting more Protein in. (Thank God) but most of the protein is coming from nonfat Greek yogurt, skim milk, soups...which all seem to have at least 5-6 grams of sugar per serving. Like this morning, I slowly had 1/3rd cup of nonfat Greek yogurt, and a 1/4 cup of Rebbl Protein Shake with a cup of skim milk...after adding it all up, it was 28 grams of protein but 18 grams of sugar. Now I'm worried. I really want to do this right and not mess up. How many grams of sugar have you been eating a day?

Thanks!!

I try not to eat anything processed that has more than 10g of sugar, but that’s about the only counting I do. I don’t eat enough fruit to really feel like I’m overdoing the sugar on account of that so- that’s why I only worry about sugar in processed or things that have added sugar like yogurts and Protein supplements.< /p>

I asked my surgeon if there was a limit per item to avoid dumping and he said no because it is different for every person. No idea what the limit per day would be

If it's not added processed sugar then I wouldn't fret. I get 40-50g sugar daily, but it's primarily lactose from fortified (added milk powder) milk drinks I drink in preference to Protein Shakes. Average about 800cals total for all food and drink, 65-75 Protein. I don't knowingly eat any processed sugar and losing on track. The milk was drs orders. Guessing they were concerned about Calcium too.

I can't remember where I read it, but I think it was no more than 14g of sugar per 100g (which is a serving here where I live.) It might have been in my materials, I can't remember, since I haven't read them lately. Most of what I eat has about 8-10g of sugar per serving, though I'm not sure what I'm getting daily.

Somedays I struggle to eat much at all, and I know I'm not getting that much for the most part. I probably should start logging, but I just really hate counting out every single thing that I eat. <.<

My personal rule, 2.5 years out, is no more than 10 g of sugar, unless its at Breakfast, 15g. (All bets are off if the sugar is from fruit - I'm talking about processed sugar.)

Not sure what the total a day should be. Once I started reading the sugar on the labels I was blown away with how high sugar was on the “healthy” items.

Plain just tastes so gross to me...I know it’s better for you but it’s just too bitter.

You can put some sugar-free Syrup in it and then it tastes nom!

You can improve its taste by adding chopped strawberries/blueberries/nuts or SF Syrup of your choice.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
