It’s crazy the vast differences in plans.

  • Popular Post
As I continue on in my post op phases, it’s crazy to me how different the plans are for the phases. Like I’m day 19 post op and doing the blended purée phase that lasts two weeks. I see some folks, same timeline, already on to soft foods. Some things that folks are allowed to eat, I’m told to never eat again. I figured there would be more standardization in this. Boy was I wrong!!

Not only are the phases vastly different, but so are the post-op diets. Some surgeons are all high-protein, low carb, others want more of a balance with protein/carbs, etc.

  • My surgeon has 4 stages two weeks each then regular food unless there is a problem transitioning to the next stage. I told the Nut that I go online and read other people's plans and she didn't care fo

  • So many different plans, I agree. But the good news is, many people on here with vastly different plans have all found success!

This blows my mind. I am going bonkers now just starting phase two, soft purées. I miss food with a crunch. Just today I was able to eat tuna fish. It’s been so hard

Here is the link to everything my doctor allows and when. He also has some “never agains” like soda, citrus fruits, etc.

Difference. Your phase 2 is one week. Mine is two.??‍♂️. I want to chew something dang it.

What is the issue with citrus fruit?

I just had surgery on December 28, 2018. I was told 2 weeks of protein shakes, followed by two weeks of pureed food, then two weeks of soft food. After that, I can have regular food. I'm having a difficult time trying to get in enough protein and water daily. I can only take baby sips at a time or I feel uncomfortable. Has anyone had this feeling?

It really has been eye-opening (and, at times, frustrating) to see the variations in plans. I had a two-week liquid pre-op diet. After surgery, my plan was two weeks of clear liquids, followed by two weeks of full liquids. Then two weeks of blended/soft foods followed by introducing "new" foods until goal is met.

Technically I am to start stage 3, blended/soft foods tomorrow. However, I have been experimenting with various soft foods in the last few days. I go back to work (I'm a teacher) Friday, and I wanted to make sure I knew what to expect eating actual food (and hopefully not get sick at school).

Yes, if I drink to fast or to big of a drink I feel like I have big bubble in my stomach and it goes into my back. Just slow down and take your time. I have only gotten to bottles of water in so far and have only gotten all my protein in once. Still haven't gotten all of my fiber in. I am 3 weeks out today.

It will get better. I was the same way at the same point. Now I’m drinking liquids normally. Make sure you walk as much as you can. It helps nearly everything. Good luck.

It is interesting...

I was one week full liquids, then 2 weeks on purees. Now on Wednesday I can start softies until 10 weeks at which point I can go for it!

I was going to say my plan is exactly the same & then I realized your profile says harrisburg, did you do surgery at Hershey? That’s where I had mine done!
My doctor has me on liquids for two weeks post surgery, then puréed food for 3 more weeks, then soft food for three more weeks then FINALLY, slowly starting regular food. Today was day 6 post surgery. I’m having zero issues! Feel great! I’ve lost 10 lbs since surgery, 16 since my last weigh in one week before surgery. Yay me!

The second day after my surgery they let me eat cream of wheat with sweetener veggie broth and sugar free Vanilla pudding and Italian ice...

Now on my 5th day fter surgery I had enlightened ice cream, lobster bisque, and baby food...

I'll be on soft foods after I see my dr for follow up on the 10th

Definitely no standards at all. In the end you'll have to find out what works best long term for you.

The differences between plans are extreme, and I have even found conflicting info within the plan my NUT gave me! That's why I find it so interesting that some people follow their surgeon's plan as if it were the word of God...and yet, if you had gone to a different surgeon, your plan might be completely different. The biggest difference I have seen is caffeine. Few allow it from the beginning, others introduce it at 1, 3 or 6 months, others ban it for life. I was cleared at one month, and I was happy that my surgeon was not particularly conservative about coffee, but I quickly discovered that it didn't agree with me and that I wasn't ready. Same with vitamin pills.

Exactly!!! For instance, in my plan, it says to avail potatoes, rice, breads, but yet have in an example meal, mashed potatoes, and a slice of toast. ??‍♂️. My surgeon cleared me for caffeine after week 2!! It’s crazy.

That's what I don't understand as well.

I’m all over the place with it. I’ve done soups. One of my favs is meatloaf and gravy, over mashed cauliflower. I’ve done chili and tuna and crab salad. I’m ready to chew something!!! Starts tomorrow. Yay.
