How many calories are you allowed?

Recommended Posts

At 5 weeks out from surgery, I'm allowed 300 to 400 calories per day. At 3 months post op I can bump up to 500 calories "depending on workouts". This seems crazy low compared to others I've read about.

I feel hungry all the time, I'm barely losing 2 pounds per week, and it's really hard to advance my diet and meet my minimum 60mg Protein with only 400 calories. Workout days are rough, too, when I'm burning 550 calories per day and only taking in 400. There have been days I've cheated and eaten up to 550 calories on workout days because I'm starving.

What are everyone else's caloric goals for this stage?

When I was losing the best was between 450-650 cals per day. I could get a buttload of food in with that.

Here's one of my logs from that time:090618DD_500cal.thumb.JPG.5996db7708e9d5bf2b224346bac3ce55.JPG

I should add that I am not allowed fruits, nuts/seeds, or carbs that don't come from vegetables or dairy. It really limits my options. It's basically a ketogenic diet (from what I know of the Keto diet).

I do like fish, which I can eat more of than I am currently.

But even the examples you show are outside my allowance, with the 400 calorie max right now. I could cut a few things out, of course, but then I'm back to struggling to get that 60g Protein minimum!

It seems that the more vegetables you include the less hungry you will be. Stay away from nuts and seeds if you can for a while (high caloric impact) with such a low cal plan

At your stage I was at about 600-700 cals. These days 1200 and under to continue losing.

Of course, only do what he says you can. I was illustrating what I could "get" for 500-550 cals. It's a LOT of food. And I had no issues making 60g Protein in 400 cals.

Here was one from about 6days out from surgery:

The point I was trying to make, is if you concentrate on protein and keep everything else minimal, you CAN stay at 400cals per day (or 500cals). And at 500cals, you get a LOT of food.

I'm curious about this too. I am on full liquids with some pureed foods and most days I am between close to 500 and it is very hard to get my Protein at lower calories since I can't use foods like fish or chicken. Dairy is where most of my calories come from and that has natural sugars and fat, so it isn't as high in protein as something like tuna. I worry I am having too many calories, but all of the foods I've had are on my plan and I was just told to make sure I get at least 60 grams of protein. I am staying away from a lot of foods I am allowed to have, such as hummus and Soup because even though I love them (and they taste so good right now after all the sweet stuff), I don't want to waste the calories or stomach real estate on low protein foods.

I am definitely going to start including more veggies! I had steamed green Beans last night and they were glorious.

That food log looks like where I am now, which is my problem. Basically all your protein is coming from shakes. I'm cool with that, but I'm supposed to be advancing my diet, which puts me back in the position of trying to stay below 400 calories but get in 60g of protein - and work up to 80g!

I made an appt with a dietitian tomorrow so I can get some more insight on this concern! Thank you for taking the time to give me some samples!

My endoscopic surgeon wants me at 90 grams Protein daily, short of 1-2 shakes for the supplementation- I Do Not Think I will Make it There!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
