Hello everyone!

I was approved a few days ago (after only waiting a week) and received my surgery date for December 12, 2018! I chose this date out of the few offered to me because I am currently in college and I will be able to finish up my classes prior to the surgery (which was a huge worry of mine.) It's about two weeks before my birthday too!

Anyone else scheduled out in December?

How is it going? I am also doing mine on the break between semester's. My surgery is the 27th.

Hey Wombat,

While it was crazy trying to get everything done prior to surgery, the relief that I had post-op was definitely all worth it. Instead of having to focus on school, I could focus on myself and just getting better. I also don't feel cognitively 100% and that simply could be because I'm not getting a huge amount of calories right now.

It's officially one week post-op and things are okay. I wouldn't call myself hungry at all, but the head hunger is still pretty strong. I am a lot more tired right now (because I feel better and want to do MORE things.) I am a stomach sleeper and can sleep on my stomach . . . okay. . . for part of the night (like I wake up on my stomach and it's not killing me.) I'm pretty much not taking any pain medicine except at night to calm the painful incision so I can rest comfortably. Is there something specific I could answer for you?

Would I do this again? 110%!

Can’t believe there allowing you to Eat not good .99% of all Surgery there is only liquids for the first 2 Weeks then go to purée and mashed .Be very careful you don’t end up with a leak or blockage .
I trust my surgeon and his group. He was one the earliest surgeons to use the sleeve as a primary procedure in 2002 at the University of Pittsburgh. He's done over 3000 sleeves alone. He believes this is the better peri-operative protocol, so I will follow his instructions. I know other groups do things differently, but this is what my group recommends.

I am one week out today and can now advance to purees and mushies. I have to follow that for 2 weeks, then can move to the next phase. Every surgical team is different.

Oh that is so true, from some I have read I'm not sure if they are on the same Planet, let alone same surgery!

I don’t get it. I had my 10 day checkup today and asked about scrambled eggs. The dietician said that’s not a possibility until week 4 after surgery. WHAT!!!!

While my group goes to puree and mushies the day of discharge, I am stuck at his phase for 4 weeks. So, yes every group is different and they all have there reasons. One thing to be sure is that no ACMBS approved program would put their patients at risk.

I'm almost 5 days out, feeling fantastic on my no sugar juice and broth only. I still somehow have energy even with pretty much no Protein intake. Wishing this bloating and inflammation would go down. But overall NO REGRETS

Not really doing too well. Whether I drink or don't drink I have intermittent chest pain that feels like someone is squeezing me right in the middle of my chest. I talked to my doctor's NP this morning and her suggestion was that I take my Percocets. I've been avoiding them since I wasn't having constant unbearable pain. I feel like my pain is being dismissed and I have a bunch of errands to run before I graduate on Wednesday so I can't even take the Percocet [emoji58]. Here's to hoping things get easier
my Dr told me that was sto.ach spasms to take a muscle relaxer will help

Be careful Hannah Protein helps your body heal. I think it’s the only think consistent across the board.
Yes . ... That is the one constant that every surgeon requires.

Sent the last I reply too. You need the Protein to heal but also because during the rapid weight loss phase you will lose muscle mass if you don't have enough protein. The concern isn't about skeletal muscle, but critical smooth muscle tissue like your heart! A couple of days not meeting your protein goals won't hurt you, but if you are not eating any calories from protein you are going to end up back in the hospital with serious complications.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
